My Amazon drives occasionally need to be reauthorized. Is there a way around this?

I need to downgrade .631 to authorize the drives so I'm hoping there's a way to prevent them getting disconnected.

Anyone who expects to use a product that has a feature that you have to exclusively enable because its known to be unstable and not reliable is a bit delusional. I find it absurd that people actually used it for anything other than testing, or throwing data into it that you don't care if you lose.

    Just my two cents.

Ginoliggime reacted to pofo14 in Snapraid + Drivepool vs. Just Drive Pool
    Hello All,

I have an opinion question to ask the forum. For years I have been using Drivepool for pooling, and snapraid for protecting myself against drive failure.

I am currently running into an unknown issue with snapraid, where my sync command gets stuck at 0%, which I am unable to figure out.

That leads me to a point where I am questioning whether I need snapraid. Since I have Scanner along with Drivepool, I am wondering if the evacuation functionality in Scanner can protect me against the drive failures. Essentially if I always ensure that I have at least the capacity of one drive of free space available in my Drivepool I would survive one drive failure.

Currently I am running 6 data drives in the pool, along with 2 drives for parity. If I were to just add the parity drives to the pool I would have more than 2 drives worth of "free capacity" for scanner to evacuate to if there was a drive failure.

While snapraid has serve me well, and allowed me to recover files, just leveraging scanner / Drivepool could simplify my setup slightly.

Just wanted to get the communities thoughts on this.

    Thanks in advance

Ginoliggime reacted to Brad in Windows 7 BSoD BAD_POOL_HEADER
My Windows 7 box had been running quite happily with a bunch of services on it (Plex, Bittorrent Sync, IIS). Since I have been running DrivePool (and scanner) I have been getting many blue screens, probably at least one per day. I am pretty sure it happens when Plex is streaming something off of the pool, but that process was previously running totally fine without crashes. The most recent blue screen is attached. I also remember seeing some of the previous BSoD's referencing cdfs5.sys. I have tried turning off network boost and even duplication on most of my folders so that the app shouldn't be that busy balancing or anything like that.

I have 8 1.5TB drives in the pool and one 80GB SSD (OS drive). 4 of the drives are in an eSATA dock and 4 are in a USB2 dock.

The really annoying part is that Windows is set to reboot on blue screens, but it hangs on these blue screens and has to be rebooted manually.

Ginoliggime reacted to pofo14 in Trying to Identify "Bad Drive" when there are no SMART warnings
First just wanted to start by thanking the community, great support and a lot of useful info in the forums.

I recently posted this topic because I was having some issue's getting my "snapraid sync" command to complete and was asking about other options for my setup.  I got some good advice from you guys, as well in the snapraid forum here.  Turns out, one of my parity drives was bad.  Scanner wasn't reporting any issue's with it, and even the snapraid smart command, didn't have any errors.  The snapraid command did say that the parity drive had a 100% chance of failing in the next year, which gave me enough of a clue.  I confirmed this drive was the culprit after running the sync command again, I saw that this specific disk (x:\) was stuck as 100% usage in Task Manager and the snapraid process was "hung".  I also checked the event log to find the following errors happening:
Event 129, storachi - Reset to Device \Device\RaidPort2, was issued. It appears every 30 seconds, from about the time I started the sync commamd (or it "hangs), until I restarted. Event 140: NTFS - The system failed to flush the data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeID: X:, Devicename: \Device\HarddiskVolume8 Event 153, disk - The IO Operation at logical block address 0x1 for Disk9 (PDO Name: \Device\00000036) was retired Event 153, disk - The IO Operation at logical block address 0x11 for Disk9 (PDO Name: \Device\00000036) was retired Event 153, disk - The IO Operation at logical block address 0x21 for Disk9 (PDO Name: \Device\00000036) was retired I understand that drives can go bad without Scanner reporting an issue as described in this forum here.  The errors from that post seem identical to one of the errors I have listed above.  Actually I have been struggling with the 129 & 153 warnings for a while as described in this post.  One main question I have is how can I determine the actual physical drive that the 129 and 153 errors are happening for?  I believe based on this experience I have now determined it, but it was really the Event 140 that made it obvious as it listed the drive letter.  Without that I may not have known which drive was causing these problems.  Essentially how can I determine the drive for \Device\RaidPort2 and \Device\00000036?  I am hoping that they are one and the same, and they also point to the drive from Event 140 (x:\).

For those interested I got around the snapraid sync issue, but removing the bad drive from my configuration, and reverting to a single parity drive.  After doing that the I ran a full sync, which seems to have completed successfully.  I have a new drive en route to replace the bad parity drive.

I really am asking as I want to verify that the three errors above all pertain to the drive I am replacing and not another one currently in my PC.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    EDIT-----

I got the brand new drive.  Put it in.  Configured this new drive as a parity drive, tried to run a sync command, and it froze.  In the Event Log I again see the "Event 129, storachi - Reset to Device \Device\RaidPort2, was issued."  So this seems to be an issue when I connect a drive to that SATA Port, or at least when a drive connected to that port attempts to be read / write to.

Does this mean it may not be the drive, and perhaps the sata port / controller on the motherboard?

Additionally I still get the error below (although the Disk changed from 9 to 12).  If I look in disk Management Tool, Disk 12 is actually one of my Pooled drive in DrivePool, meaning it is one of the Virtual Drives Drivepool creates.

Event 153, disk - The IO Operation at logical block address 0x1 for Disk12 (PDO Name: \Device\00000036) was retired

    I also notice now :

Event 153, disk - The IO Operation at logical block address 0x1 for Disk13 (PDO Name: \Device\00000037) was retired.

Disk 13 in Disk Management is another virtual drive Drivepool creates.

The 153 warnings nay not be related to the other issue, as they have nothing to do with snapraid, but I am not sure if those errors are masking an issue with an underlying disk.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ken

there does seem to be a 4,6,or 8 gig file size limit, so be sure to split the really big files.

Does anyone have these drives? is this something you noticed? If I need to return the drive I would like to know ASAP obviously. I turned on duplication just incase but I'm still a little short on drives to cover everything.

Ginoliggime reacted to JasonC in Should I rebalance pre-seeded drives?
As I was migrating from a damaged StorageSpaces pool, I ended up pre-seeding a couple of disks before transferring all my disks to the DrivePool based disk. So I have a couple of disks that currently have the majority of the content on the pool. It's significant, so say, 2TB on each of a 4TB disk, but the total pool size is much larger.

Should I explicitly tell it to perform a re-balance now, or let it just get to it when it gets to it? It sort of seemed like from the settings that an automatic rebalance wouldn't bother re-allocating until they were much more full, so I'm wondering if I should actually wait until then or get ahead of it.

    Thank you!

    You're very welcome.

Well, they have dropped in price recently, but yeah, the SATA connectors are a premium still (even if you get controller cards, they can be very expensive, very quickly).

And as I said, if you disable realtime duplication, that should "fix" the issue, although with the mentioned caveats. Not idea, but it works.

Yup, Specifically, with Real Time duplication, any time you write or modify data on the pool, the writes are done to all copies of the file in parallel.
Essentially, the driver works as a proxy for the file system (this is a drastic oversimplification), and with real time duplication enabled, any file system commands (creating/modifying/etc) are sent to all destination disks at the same time. So locking will not affect the software's ability to write the data.

Alex (the developer) has a good post that goes over this feature (from the alpha version years ago), that may be worth taking a read:
    http://blog.covecube.com/2012/02/file-duplication-in-stablebit-drivepool-beta-m4/

And if you disable real time duplication, then this occurs at 2AM normally. However, this can be changed by creating the advanced config file (a "default" version will always be present after installing or updating).
    http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_2.x_Advanced_Settings
Set the "FileDuplication_DuplicateTime" to a valid time, and this is when it will run a duplication pass.
Also, changing the duplication status should trigger a duplication pass, and the pool condition indicator (at the bottom) should allow you to re-duplicate manually.

Well, the Ordered File Placement will attempt to do so, but no, it's not guaranteed to do so.

I believe there is a feature request pending for this already (a balancer that will specifically keep the contents of folders together), and once StableBit CloudDrive is released, we (Alex) should at least get to it, whether or not it's implemented.

Though, as I mentioned, the "File Placement Rules" will allow you to do this, albeit completely manually. (though, you can also do neat things like adding a "\Music\*\*.mp3" to force the mp3 files onto a specific disk, while leaving other files to go anywhere... or add another rule for different extensions).  But it sounds like it's not quite what you're looking for, though.

Almost feels im talking to myself lol.

Anyway Chris wanted to ask you about how are you liking running WS2012R2? Besides using it as a domain controller what other things are you using with it?

In my case, i have briefly used R2 Essentials starting out but now have a license for Standard which some say is better anyway. Ive always been intrigued in working with server based gear and OS's.

I've built my server using the SM X9SCL+-F board with the Xeon 1230 v2 cpu with 16gb ram in the Antec 302 case.

In my case, I have 6 computers running Win7, two of them being workstations, 3 XP machines, and 3 laptops. I know with the Essentials role in Standard it doesn't support XP clients for backups but I can use Paragon Recovery to backup the XP boxes to a network share.

I plan to run Emby server, Drivepool and Scanner all on the same box, and possibly JRiver for all my music needs.

Other things id like to use my server for is network booting via PXE and i have two network printers i use regularly. I'm debating whether to delve into domains as i have tried it before but admit was a little confusing on how domains work but am willing to give it another go at it and get some understanding.

I also read that 2012 can also be used to give out IP addresses as well. I have used HyperV before and it works very well, but not sure whether i need to do VM at this time.

I also bought an LSI 9211 8i SAS card (already flashed to IT mode, P19 firmware) with the cables. I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the world of servers!

Ginoliggime reacted to Alex in SSD Optimizer Balancing Plugin
I've just finished coding a new balancing plugin for StableBit DrivePool, it's called the SSD Optimizer. This was actually a feature request, so here you go.

I know that a lot of people use the Archive Optimizer plugin with SSD drives and I would like this plugin to replace the Archive Optimizer for that kind of balancing scenario.

The idea behind the SSD Optimizer (as it was with the Archive Optimizer) is that if you have one or more SSDs in your pool, they can serve as "landing zones" for new files, and those files will later be automatically migrated to your slower spinning drives. Thus your SSDs would serve as a kind of super fast write buffer for the pool.

The new functionality of the SSD Optimizer is that now it's able to fill your Archive disks one at a time, like the Ordered File Placement plugin, but with support for SSD "Feeder" disks.

Check out the attached screenshot of what it looks like

Of course, it would have to be remote GUI or have a web UI. This would also be a good platform for doing some media things with something like Emby. It would be really light-weight and easy to maintain, and it can be installed on a physical box or as a VM.

After nearly $200 of experimenting on different software combinations, i finally have one that works. I cant say it works on the drivepool system, as ive not gotten it to work there, but that isn't unique to itself, its a finicky system. it is just as well, netdrive 2 and boxcryptor can be resource hogs.

netdrive2 can use amazon cloud drive (unlimited at $60 per year), and map it as a virtual drive.
boxcryptor then maps to that virtual drive (another virtual drive) giving you file name encryption(it looks like unicode korean, at least 64 characters) and otherwise transparent, random access; endless drive encrypted goodness.

amazon cloud drive shows as a 107 TB path, and it never seems to shrink. My upload pipe is 100mb, I have been pushing 350 gig a day to it.
boxcryptor is file encryption, any one file isn't depending on the environment to work, and it works from multiple systems at the same time.

Its arguably fragile, you can get on and wipe out the backup, its little more than a mapped drive.. but its been chugging along for a week for me. as a 'second' backup its very good, i can fill it with crap i wouldn't bother backing up otherwise.

-- netdrive2 caches EVERYTHING that passes through it, so you need to dedicate a whole drive to where the cache lives, and the intended backup material used in a 'move'.. so its deleted as soon as the transfer completes. the cache clears on reset. and its defiantly transferring, not waiting in que. the windows file copy will pause while netdrive uploads, then resume for the next file. use friendly copy apps. terra copy, or xxcopy command line have been fine.

restoring / coping back is a bit inconsistent, as it cashes that as well, so while your 'copy' may seem to be slow, its going into the cache first. I did 6 gig in about 45 minutes in a restore.

After the move, the 360s can't play back media that is shared on the WSE2012 server. The master HTPC is on the domain, and can play back movies from the server. The XBOX can play back media that's on the HTPC, but when I try to play back media from the server, I get the typical "Application error". Any ideas? I can be more specific or post logs or something if necessary.
