Ginoliggime reacted to 4Frame in RocketRAID 642L - No S.M.A.R.T. info on Scanner
Hey everyone, just joined the forum a few minutes ago. Stablebit Scanner is such a great program that I purchased two licenses for myself and love it! I recently purchased a Rosewill RSV-S8 enclosure and a RocketRAID 642L RAID card. I know, it's not the greatest card, but it does work okay for now.

Stablebit Scanner doesn't pull SMART data from any drive connected to the 642L card, whether it's a single disk or the enclosure. I also tested the enclosure direct to my motherboard and it was able to pull SMART info from a disk. Seems like it's definitely the controller...

I did some research on the forums and a few people suggest some sort of UnsafeIO setting. Not sure what to do yet as I don't want to mess anything up, so I'd rather get some advice from you guys and/or the developers!

Ginoliggime reacted to RobbieH in Client restore off of WSE2012 doesn't work
I'm at a loss here. The problem with me is I like to find the root cause of my issues. I know I could probably boot off my W7 disk and do a repair, but I want to know why my restore isn't working on its own. I've done this from WHS 1 and 2 with no issues before, don't know what is wrong this time.

    Scenario:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64, i3 processor, SSD boot drive.
Machine has been acting funny as if something were wrong with the drive, so I took it out, erased it, ran a full surface test, etc. Did not find any issues, but it's not the first time I've seen an SSD be finicky.

Create recovery thumb drive from WSE 2012. Boot from thumb drive, run full recovery, recovery succeeds every time. Reboot, and I get "Missing bootldr".

I did my searches as best I could on Google, but I can't find anyone with a similar issue. Since a lot of us here run WSE or WHS, I was hoping someone had some experience with this. I don't want to run recovery until I know what happened.

I'm looking at using CloudDrive for a secondary backup for my home server. I have been using Crashplan but I think this service would be more useful in some ways for my purposes. The main purpose of this backup would be to have one off site that I can recover from in case of a catastrophic system failure or natural disaster (I live right in the middle of Tornado Alley). My concern is, if I no longer have access to the system that the drive was attached to, because I won't be able to detach it, will I be able to attach it to a new system? Obviously, if I can't reattach it to a new system, this backup will be worthless. I am using it with Google Drive if that matters.

Ginoliggime reacted to HPLovecraft in Moving files from disk to disk - the best way?
    Hi All,

I'm back again with another potentially stupid question... The 'Pool on my home server contains the usual household shared folders: Documents; Pictures; Music; Videos - accessed from various client PCs, Plex on the Roku, Squeezeplayers etc. There are four HDDs in the pool, all files have 2 x duplication.

Because I'm a bit anal (and because I've been burned in the past) I use placement rules to force my folders onto the exact disks where I want them. So Documents & Pictures are duplicated on disks 1 & 3; Music & Videos are duplicated on disks 2 & 4. This allows me to ensure my files are duplicated on two different brands of HDD (a year or two ago a pair of Seagates that I bought at the same time, failed at the same time, teaching me a valuable lesson...).

Anyhoo, my Videos folder is getting very fat, so I'm a bit low on space on disks 2 & 4. No problem, I'll just move all my Music onto the same drives as Documents & Pictures (1 & 3), where there's plenty of room. How best to do this?

My initial thought was to simply change the placement rules for the Music folder, and let DrivePool get on with it. But is there any benefit at all in shutting down the DrivePool service and moving the folder myself? Then restarting DrivePool and changing the placement rules to match what I just did? A bit like the manual way we pre-seed drives? Unlike my pre-seeding, I'd be moving the folder onto two entirely different physical drives...
Told you it was a potentially stupid question!
    cheers, Simon

    1 x Blu-ray
    4 x 6TB WD Red
    3 x 8TB Seagate Archive
    1 x 3 TB Hitachi

    1 x Asmedia 1061 Controler Card
    3 x Tuner Cards

I need more storage SATA drives. I have spare random ones and plan  to buy some more WD Reds

What is good for external that will work reliably With DrivePool and Scanner.
I have had no luck with Scanner and External USB and getting any SMART and even tried Advanced settings in Scanner but had computer lock up. Cheap temporary no name USB bay keeps disconnecting every few weeks and I want it gone.
    Is eSata an option?

If suggesting other technology I will need hand holding as I don't understand SAS etc and don't have an enterprise budget but could spend up to AUD $500 or maybe more if robust.

    I am in Australia

This is all I could easily find that takes greater than 4 TB hard drives readily available.

This is the only Case that seemed to have eSata I could easily find but some say power supply unreliable

If you guys haven't noticed, I've been pretty much completely absent from the forums since Thursday (Jun 2). And I do mean completely absent...

Thursday morning, I woke up with moderate pain in my stomach, enough to actually bleed into my dreams and wake me up.  And it proceeded to only get worse through the course of the day.

A bit after noon, i headed to the ER, because the main was getting to be too much (or at least a lot more intense than I was comfortable with).

A few hours after that, confirmed that i have gallstones... yay.   No infection, so no immediate need to perform surgery.  Just pain killers and time.
Though, it means I need to follow up and see if surgery is recommended, in the near future.

Unfortunately, apparently morphine/opiates only mildly dull the pain for me, and that's about it.  Meaning, that the last couple of days have been an exercise in curling up into a ball in a dark, cool room.

Over the weekend, I started feeling a lot better. The pain is down to a dull ache for the post part. But I'm still not 100%, and doing more than a couple of hours of work (even desk work, redditing, facebook, games, etc) has me sapped.

This means, that I've gotten to most (not all) of the internal tickets, and haven't even started on the forum posts.  Soo if it's critical (or even "just important", please, PLEASE do use the contact form (or instruct others to do so):

With the current issues going on with my EX-495 its pushing me more and more to new hardware. I have thought about either a Mac Pro, HP Gen 8, or a DIY rack mount build. My current set up is a Ex-495 with a Q9550s processor and a 5 bay san digital esata enclosure. These are the things I would like in my next machine ( give or take):
      1) Equal or higher performance CPU 2) CPU Capable of multiple 1080p streams (including Audio) Needs to support x265 and 10bit  3) File server of course 4) Hot swappable HDD (I know the Gen8 doesn't support this) 5) All Drives in same case 6) Small foot print if not rack mount (have home setup to garage where my rack is) 7) Should be #1 i don't want my power bill to go thru the roof. I would like to keep power usage at around the usage of the enclosure and EX-495.      I currently use Serviio and Air Media HD to stream my media to iPhones and TV. The current processor doesn't do much stuttering if at all which is nice when watching a movie. Currently I'm having issue with remote access (can get sign in page after sign in it times out) on WS2012e R2 but I would like remote access. Help pointing me in the right direction or suggestions on what i should do is greatly appreciated. With tax time coming up i should have a little extra coin to make something decent if not nice.

I am using version 1.0.0.802 Beta on Windows 7 64bit. I get a memory leak that immediately uses up all available memory on my system. This doesn't occur on Windows 8.1. It also seems linked to the size of the drive. I loaded up a 10 tb NTFS drive (encrypted) and cloud drive used 13 gigs of my memory (out of 32gb). I loaded up my 256tb NTFS drive (encrypted) and cloud drive uses 29 gb of my memory. Closing the drive immediatly brings my ram usage down to 2-3 gb.

I saw this was fixed on newer versions of windows, but it seems like a current bug on windows 7 64 bit still.

In addition to the memory leak - the cpu usage is 30% on a 6 core 12 thread cpu. As soon as stable bit is closed - it returns to a normal usage of 0-1% or less (with no other programs running).

Can anything be done to fix this?

    Thanks!

Ginoliggime reacted to Avtechman in Reliable Client Backup Solutions
I'm trying to determine what would be a good backup solution to backup all of my Windows 7 machines to one server. Basically, I am trying to decide what server OS to install on my new smaller server build, that will also run DrivePool and Scanner. I've read that Windows Server 2012 R2 would be ideal, but I'm wondering to install the Essential version or the Standard and install 3rd party backup software, like Paragon Backup and Recovery, etc. The Essential version has the client backup feature but of course doesn't support XP clients (but WHS 2011 does). I have two XP machines that I use for analog video capture and the best hardware was made in the XP era, so necessitates backing those up too.

I may use the SM board I have along with the Xeon E31230 v2 for this setup.

The main thing with the WS2012 is that it forces itself as a domain controller, which I don't need at this time. However I would like the ability to be able to utilize a print server so any machine in the house can print to it. I'm sure there are other uses but haven't looked into them yet. With this server box I plan to run Emby, JRiver for music streaming and of course storage for all my media collection.

What are you guys using for a backup scheme (for clients) on your servers?

Just purchased another bundle license of DrivePool, Scanner and CloudDrive for my new big dog home server.

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (needed 2 VMs and more than 64GB of memory limit of Essentials). If I only need 2 PC's to have read and 1 PC read/write access to the folders within the DrivePool. Is it worth it to setup active directory and domain or is there a simpler access option for my scenario?

This is my first run with Windows Server 2012 R2 (running WHS 2011 on my other file server). I read about adding local users on the server, setting up the share and setting the permissions for each user. Best practices seems to frown upon this method but in my case I'm wondering should I go this route, something similar, or take the time to research proper active directory and domain setup/configuration?

Most of the comparable examples online are for small office setups that are much more complex with 10-50 client PC's. I would really appreciate any input on the best way to go about configuration in server 2012 R2 for accessing/transferring files and folders to the DrivePool.

Apologies in advance: if these questions are not geared toward DrivePool enough, feel free to remove the posting or let me know and I will do so.   Thanks

@aron, you will be better off getting support in the VMware forums as we are not ESXi experts here, and this has nothing to do with Stablebit products.  What I do know is that the command you have issued is a list of partitions, so this is one device with 8 partitions on it and is the disk you have ESXi installed on.  It could be that your other disks are not partitioned and formatted yet or your controller is not presenting the disks properly...not really sure.  I see that your controller does appear on the compatibility list, but that doesn't necessarily mean that SMART data is supported for it in the product.
