    Hi,

    Just a quick question.
Does DrivePool have the option to include a hotspare disk so that when it detects a disk that is failing it will automatically switch to that disk?

Wyatt_sew reacted to Shane in Glossary - Alpha, Beta, RC, Release, Stable, Final, Version
Here's how I perceive the whole alpha/beta/version ball of string.

Alpha - the bare skeleton of a program, very crash-prone, full of bugs and lacking many planned features.

Beta - all major planned features and adding minor features, lots of minor bugs, often still some major bugs

RC (Release Candidate) - all major features, most/all minor features, only minor/unknown bugs should remain

Release - all major features, all minor features, no known bugs (except maybe a couple that are proving really hard to fix)

Stable - no known bugs, or at least the few remaining known bugs are well-documented edge-cases with workarounds

Final - can mean Stable, can mean Release, can mean last minor revision of a particular version on the roadmap

Version - a numerical way of distinguishing that the software is different from the last time it was published, often in the form of a date (e.g. ymd 20120616), integer (e.g. build# 1234) or revision (e.g. major.minor 2.3) or combination (e.g. ymd.build or revision.build or y.major.minor.build)

Roadmap - a list of planned features sorted by planned version, at least in theory.

For a hypothetical example, Fooware 2014 build 5.4 Beta might be a program published in the year 2014, is the 5th major version of that program, which in turn has seen 4 minor revisions (added another minor feature and/or fixed some bugs since the 3rd minor revision) that is still in Beta (has a tendency to crash for at least six different reasons along with numerous edge case problems).

To further confuse things, Alpha/Beta/etc can refer to a particular version of a program, a range of versions of a program, or be a separate tag independent of the version numbering scheme, depending on the preference of the person(s) doing the naming. For example, if you see a roadmap with Fooware 2014.5.3 Stable followed by Fooware 2014.5.4 Beta, this is likely to mean that a new minor feature has been added that may/has introduced some new bugs as well.

Wyatt_sew reacted to Kelby in Scanner isn't scanning one of my drives
I'm using v. 2.4.0.2929 on WHS 2011.  I have five drives connected, and 4/5 have been scanned and report healthy.  However, I have one drive (a WD20EARX) that just won't scan.  The status bar constantly says "waiting to scan (disk access)."  It's been like this for days.  What's up?

In part because it's a way to generate more interaction on the forum here, and because it's come up a few times...

A couple of pieces of software I highly recommend (well, aside from DrivePool and Scanner, that is):

    Subsonic:
It's media streaming software. It has a "standalone" version and "WAR" version that you can install on your server (or desktop) so you can stream your music and video to the web. Or even to your mobile device. It works great with DrivePool, as well. It does require a yearly subscription for the video, and the app support, but it's dirt cheap.
Personally, I use a fork of it called "Madsonic", as it's much more actively developed (more than one update a year).  ESET:
I use this on all of my computers. I've been a long time supporter of the company and love their product. In fact, I have it installed  on my server (Server 2012 Essentials), though I am using the "ESET File Server" edition. It's cheap, and has all the features that you'd want for a file server. Otherwise, NOD32 works great on all desktop Windows versions, as well as Windows Home Server.
Their licensing is also "version independent", so you can look for a cheap copy of an older version, and update to the newest version out. It is a good, cheap way to get multiple PCs protected. And it also uses Windows PE to create an offline scanner. Raxco Perfect DIsk:
While it may be debatable if defragmentation is needed... I've seen it greatly improve performance. Especially on WHSv1.  It's even SSD aware, and has it's own method for optimizing SSDs.  And personally, I find that the "Performance Aggressive" SMART Placement option does seem to help with performance.

Wyatt_sew reacted to northface in Assign HDD to 3rd time Folder Duplication only?
    Hey guys.
Maybe confusing title. But what I want is easy to understand with example:
    1. OS: Windows 8.1
    2. Software: Most recent stablebit DrivePool
    3. HDDs: 2x 2TB + 1x 500gb

Setup: I have a pool consisting of 2x2 TB at the moment(FIY: before they entered the pool, i activated Bitlocker on both of them and then altered the DrivePool config to deal with bitlocker). Real time duplication is active, so basically a nice mirror.

What I Want: I want to activate Folder Duplication (3x) for important folders. I want to use the 500gb Drive (it is not added yet)for that. Is it possible that only the files for Folder Duplication (3x) is stored to the new 500gb drive and nothing else? I want to leave the  "mirror" intact and only use the 500gb for the 3rd mirror for certain folders.

    Is that possible?Thanks in advance

Wyatt_sew reacted to logbit in Access multiple WHS2011 dashboards from one PC?
    This is definitely off-topic
I have two WHS2011s on my network - they back one another up.

My client PC is connected to Server 1 and I connect to it using the dashboard as normal.

Is it possible (and if so how) to connect to Server 2 via its dashboard from my client PC.
It seems difficult as I can't find a way to setup a dashboard link to point at my second server.

    Thanks for any help

Wyatt_sew reacted to dslabbekoorn in Backup server to cloud drive, advice & suggestions?
My WSE 2012 set up works great, backing everyone of my 4 computers up each day and serving my media and software files across the network.  The only thing (other than an inability to have the client backup folder in the pool (sigh)) that I haven't yet set up is the server backup itself.  I would ideally like to set it up to backup to an offsite (cloud) file service.  I have almost zero experience with cloud backups and could use any advice you may have.  Can WSE 2012 be set up to back the server up to the cloud/  Which services are best/cheapest?  Any problems with using one?  I realize not having the server backed up is a big security risk and that reminds me, what about data security for the stuff sent out to the "cloud"?  I'd like to keep my data private as possible.  I would be backing up only the server installation/drive itself and not all my terabytes of data.  Any advice is apprecieated,  Thanks.

Well, this is going to be as off topic as it gets and fairly personal

One of my personal love affairs is sci fi short stories, and I love originality. I'm not a big fan of the Sci Fi that's on TV today, but I loved Rod Serling's work on the Twilight Zone. Today, some of the best stuff that I've read online resides here: http://qntm.org/fiction

This site is fully programmed by one Perl programmer (named Sam) and features some amazing and mind boggling stuff. I love what he's doing and would like to support him.

The stories are absolutely free and the ones that I loved in particular are:

Wyatt_sew reacted to steven1110 in Upgraded from 1.x to 2.x, some folders are not in pool
    Hello all,

This all stems from having issues with the background service not running suddenly in 1.x on a WHS2011 install.  I couldn't get drivepool to run and all of the pooled folders were showing up empty.  I saw that there was a new 2.x version when I went to download an update hoping that would solve my problem.  Anyway, I went ahead and removed 1.x and installed the new 2.x.  Drivepool is now working but I have a few folders that aren't in the pool and are empty.  Drivepool is still "checking" @ 16.3% so could it be something with that?  I find it unlikely though since other folders are showing correctly.

Under server folders, the ones that are filled with data are correctly showing under the pool drive "I", whereas the ones that aren't working are under "K".  However, "K" is actually one of the actual drives mapping designation and is being shown as a part of pool "I".

Hopefully this all makes sense and there's is an easy fix.  There are some screen shots attached for reference.

    Thanks!
