PetabytesPlease Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 I have created a pool and want it to be "D" drive but whenever i turn on or connect another hard drive it would always make the newly connected drive as "D drive" and then automatically change the pooled drive to a different letter... Quote
0 Christopher (Drashna) Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 This is a Windows issue, actually. It auto assigns the drive letter, and can bump the letter like this. The best recommendation here, unfortunately, is to assign a letter that is much further along in the alphabet (such as "P:\" for Pool, or "S:\" for Storage), as this should prevent it from being reassigned a letter. 0 Jaga Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 I assign all my pool drive letters in reverse, starting at Z. Seems to help avoid issues like this. Christopher (Drashna) 1 Quote
0 Christopher (Drashna) Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Which isn't a bad idea. But personally, I don't like using Z, since ... that seems to be the go to for mapped network drives. But as long as it's further along in the alphabet, it should avoid this issue. Jaga 1 Quote
0 Umfriend Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 I used Z once, only to find that the printer with some media card slot wanted it itself or would not print at all. Same for some Blackberry devices caliming Z. So yeah, hi up but not Y and Z. I use P, Q and R. Jaga and Christopher (Drashna) 2 Quote
0 PetabytesPlease Posted July 12, 2018 Author Posted July 12, 2018 Thanks for the feeback However i have to say that even though it does seem to be windows "not playing nice" with stable bit i do think you should endeavor to fix the issue in the pipeline Quote
0 Christopher (Drashna) Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 The problem with "fixing" that.... is that it could actually cause a LOT of problems. Right now, we leverage the normal disk APIs and functionality from Windows, without doing anything. That way, it's handled in a consistent, and sane manner. Relatively speaking. Changing that behavior means forcing the drive letter, at best. And that could break things. And ... this is a Windows issue that has been around since at least Windows 95. Quote
