  1. I'll make the guess then. Be careful with USB enclosures. Especially those "dock" ones. The controllers can do weird things to the disk (because of the controller and how it passes the disk to the OS), or if you don't plug the disk in all the way.... you can encounter issues. Only use controllers you know and trust (check online for reviews of "showing up RAW" for enclosures, you'll see a LOT of them, depending on the enclosure). And make sure that the disk is always firmly plugged in, regardless if where it located (internal or external).
  2. Well, I'm not sure how reliably Reddit is... To be blunt, I'd never site them as anything more than less than reliable... As for the cryptolocker stuff... http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2013/10/24/so-is-cryptolocker-really-that-bad.aspx http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2013/10/28/what-rules-would-you-like-to-be-added.aspx The group policies should work on non-domain computers too. And eset definitely seems to block at least some of the URLs for the virus exe. And as for Security center, it should let you "say" that you have an AV solution running and disable that warning. As for the folder thing, you can keep the drive letter and do the folder mount thing at the same time. it's not "one or the other" at all. http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Q4822624
  3. If you want to backup the data from your server, then I'd recommend using CrashPlan. It's pretty cheap, and basically unlimited capacity. As for a recoverable server backup, no cloud solution is good. You're better setting up 2-3 HDDs for backup and cycling them offsite (like to a security deposit box, or something) Also, Server 2012 Essentals supports backing up to Azure, but that's not exactly cheap either. (open up "Windows server Backup" in "Adminstrative Tools" in System and Security in the control panel.)
  4. Excluding the entire DrivePool drive may help. As for the cryptolocker info, could you provide links for that? Also, anything that does URL filtering will at least help prevent those from infecting your computers. ESET works great with DrivePool, and does the URL filtering, infact. However, we'll see about testing out Avast, and see if we can fix or work around the issue. Regards
  5. Kayot, The main thing that keeps DrivePool from running on XP is the driver we use for the pool. And as for what keeps us from writing an XP driver for DrivePool is that XP has exited mainstream support in 2009, and it's hitting End of Life in almost six months: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223 (April 2014) By the time we have a fully stable version, the OS will cease getting even critical security updates.
  6. If the disk is showing up as RAW, thats not good. That means something bad has happened to the disk, and has damaged the partition table (what tells the OS where everything is located on the drive). there are a number of recovery tools that will fix the partitiion table such as "RSync" and EaseUS's Partition Recovery (http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/). I Would recommend running one of these to try and fix the partition first. After that, .... you may need to run data recovery if it doesn't fix the disk. Sorry.
  7. Once you've added one drive to a new pool, a "new" disk will appear. That disk will have the combined capacity of all the disks added to it. However, your other disks will still remain, and be accessible. Once you've added the disk to the pool, it creates a hidden "PoolPart.xxxx" (where the x's are a long string of letters and numbers, called a GUID). If you move the contents of the disk into this hidden folder, they will appear on the pool immediately. Aside from that, there shouldn't be anything else that you would need to do.
  8. Most of the antivirus solutions should works fine with DrivePool. We haven't tested them for compatibility. But the way that DrivePool works should not trigger any issues with any virus scanner. And yes, the AV I run is ESET File Security. Certified for Server 2012(r2) and works great with DrivePool. And the Comodo AV, I remember that... Like I said, *shouldn't*. but the more moving parts you have, the higher the possibility that something weird will happen. If you want, I can test out AVG File Server Edition, and let you know if I have any issues with it.
  9. Aeklo, If you opened a ticket I should have gotten to it by now and resolved it. If I haven't, a) I apologize for that, b.) (please!) PM me the ticket # and I'll resolve that right away Also, paypal sometimes does weird stuff to us, and we apologize for that. I've checked your email address, and have manually resent the Order Confirmation Email, so you should receive that shortly. If you don't receive it, double check your junk-mail filters. Lakmus85 If you have any issues, especially licensing/order issues, please contact us at http://stablebit.com/Contact/. We try to get to all tickets within one business day. Or as soon as possible for licensing/order issues. Also, if you paid with stripe, and attached an email after the order, then that would be the expected behavior. If you do wish to receive a copy of the Order Confirmation Email for your order, use the above link and submit a ticket, and I'll see about getting that to you.
  10. We're glad that you like our product! As for the explorer thing, that's called a "Shell extension", and we try to avoid those, as they can bog the system down, and can cause issues. But I'll let alex know.
  11. we can delete/hide the post if you really want. But yeah, if your using WHS2011, then I'd recommend staying with 1.x anyhow. It's much more integrated with WHS2011 than 2.x is. @ChipMonk: If you haven't already, please open a thread. If you have already, and we haven't responded in a while, a) I sincerely appologize, and "bump" the ticket, or open a new one. We want to make sure that everything is running fine, and if not, fix it.
  12. Yes, DrivePool 2.x will detect if you're using a "Windows Server Solutions" type product (WHS2011, SBS2011E, WSSR2E, S2012E, S2012R2E, or have the Essentials Experience role installed) and install the Dashboard add-in tab. But be warned, it's not really anything more than the normal UI in the tab. And you can control it remotely without using the dashboard. And actually, I'm using Server 2012 Essentials, transitioned to Standard as my server. the Dashboard tab definitely gets created, and I love it. And santiagoDraco, glad that you love it. But enterprise drives are worth their money. I got 2x1TB from a friend. Both drives are ~5 years old, and have pretty much NO SMART errors on them. And they work great. That should say something.
  13. Santiago, I'm guessing that you mean the "unsafeDirectIo" setting. If so, that is one of the reasons it's "Unsafe". Some controllers react badly to the methods used to address the drives.
  14. That, or try this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0krodbweqz1rrc4/Scanner.Service.exe.config That's a config file that should work (uploaded from my server, which uses a RR2720SGL card)
  15. That is a great idea. I've flagged this for alex, for consideration.
  16. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECC_RAM Basically, you're a lot less likely to have memory related issues. Hence, more stable. Ideally, you'd want registered or buffered, and ECC ram, for servers. But for "home servers", just regular, unregistered ECC would be a good idea.
  17. Future proofing is ALWAYS important. And ECC RAM is definitely worth the money, especially for a server platform. And I'm not sure what point you're trying to get to here. Aside the future proofing thing. Personally, I'm running an AMD FX-8120 for my server. And it's a great CPU. But the board is only okay (was a gaming system from a friend that needed the money more than the computer). It works great for what I want, but I'm seriously considering getting a new motherboard that supports the ECC RAM, and has a TPM module. And yes, the TPM module basically just holds the key for the encryption. There are a few other encryption products can use it as well. But it's nice to not have a key to encrypt the system disk. And yeah, as long as your happy with your hardware, and what you can get out of it, that's what really matters. Each of us has their own preferences and needs for their servers. Some of us are fine with running it 24/7, while some want it as power efficient as possible.
  18. The "Ordered File Placement" may do that in the meanwhile. But I believe that Alex has already been considering doing something like this. But yes, it is a good idea. Also, if you have any programming experience, there is API for making your own (if you're interested): http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_-_Develop_Balancing_Plugins
  19. Sorry, I meant DrivePool.UI.exe. So yes, that is the right file. Thanks.
  20. Could you try the Beta version of Scanner and see if that helps? If not, then could you get a memory dump of windows when it's "misbehaving"? http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_System_Freeze
  21. For the drivers: http://www.siliconimage.com/support/ Since I'm not sure which version of Windows you're using, but these are the WIn7 drivers for both architectures: x86: http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/3132r5_x86_15190_logo_win7.zip x64: http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/3132r5_x64_15190_logo_win7.zip After updating the drivers, if you're still having the same issue, then do this: http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_System_Freeze
  22. We're pretty much only a Windows outfit, but it isn't a bad idea at all. Flagging for Alex for consideration. Regards
  23. Well, I may be upgrading the motherboard for my server soon. That's all I'm going to say. Much to my wife's chagrin.
