Hi the individual drive letters are not needed most people give the drives a name like bay 1 bay 2 etc purely to help identify the drives then remove the letters under disk management.

    Hi Chris

I spent most of today in a meeting with a small tech company demonstrating refs and storage spaces that was the main focus however other software was also used in the demo drivepool was one of them.

While I think due to reading negative reviews I have never even looked at storage spaces I have to say I was very impressed with how they presented it disconnecting drives pulling the power plug, taking a drive out and connecting to another machine to show the data is still readable and to find it's very much on par with drivepool. Also the read and write speeds were good. The closets software they compared it to was drivepool which they had much praise for the only negative comment was the lack of refs support in drivepool and the benefits of using refs so is refs support on the todo list and can it be fully integrated into drivepool to take advantage of its file healing this would eliminate the need for the file safe program we have been asking for so a bit of a trade off.

    Hi,

I have been really busy with my new setup and i've managed to fit the AMD Ryzen under water cooled into a 2u case.

On my first attempt while under benchmark the cpu would hit 65c to 70c which i wasnt overall pleased with but was happy that it was holding it's own but i wanted to improve.

So after a bit of googling i found a corsair H5 SFF water cooler which is desgined for Mini ITX Boards now this does not the fit the standard AM4 CPU Cooler Bracket but i am very fortunate to own an Ultimaker 2+ Extended 3D Printer so after a handful or prototypes i managed to desgin a new bracket that also fits the original backplate which allows the H5 to be installed very snug.

The new temp are idle under 30c and under bench around 55C which is a great improvement and I am more than happy with.  So there we have it AMD Ryzen in a 2U case under Water Cooled.

The Corsair H5 SFF is a great little CPU cooler for small spaces as you'll see in the photos everything fits very snug but it makes for a great machine.

Hi crashplan will make a backup free to local drives so if you don't want to duplicate use the free space for crashplan it's a lot quicker to replace from a local backup than from the cloud

That's the life of a computer user when it goes wrong it really goes wrong nothing is ever simple. I just upgraded my entire server rack and I have a long list of missing parts ready for the phone call to my supplier in the morning one of which is a faulty 24 bay expander backplane which half the led's dont work which will need replacing it's a shame you don't live closer I have an ever growing list of spare stuff to sell at some point

    1 x 24bay array
    1 x 1500 apc ups new version
    1 x 2200 apc ups old version
    1 x 48 port netgear switch
    2 x 4u server cases
    1 x 36 port raid/hba
    1 x 36 port sas expander
    8 x 4 bay drive caddys
    2 x 8 port hba's
    2 x 3 bay drive caddys
    2 x and fx 8150 black

That's just off the top my head I'll post my new setup once it's complete hopefully over the few weeks

Hi did you pay with a credit card if so you will be covered under section 75 I think it is which means ring the card company tell them the problem then they will contact norco direct and believe me when a company is threatened with losing its ability to accept payments they tend to sort things out and credit card companies
Don't mess around I did it once took the company 6 months before visa would allow them any transactions again power to the people

I actually thought the same I don't use cloud drive but seeing that many users are losing or having trouble with large drives if it is possible why not make 1tb drives or less combine them to one pool then when the errors start one would think the loss would be minimal but I haven't used cloud drive and don't know if that's even possible just an idea

Hi my whole pool is refs and drivepool shows all the files fine did you format through storage spaces or disk management you also need to make sure you move all files into to relevant poolpart folder

Yeah I had the same a very time consuming process I had 2 new drives just in case I had a failure so I formatted them as refs added them to the pool then used the duplicate later option to remove a few drives at a time and rinse and repeat until I was done.

If Alex ever gets time to try implement the self heal ability of refs drivepool will be very sweet deal

    Hi

Bad power supply's can also cause this it has happened to me in the past check the 12+ Rail output if it's around 20 to 30 amp it's no good most new ones put out between 60 to 75 amp and get a decent make.
its also good practice to connect all the power connections on the back of the back planes you should have 2 per backplain try mix them to spread the load so instead of using a splitter and going 1 & 2 go 1 @ 6 that way the draw on spinup is spread per output and try not to connect more than 8 drives per output from the power supply.

My power supply came with 12 molex and 12 sata over 6 output leads from the psu try look for one that does the same.

    Hi,

Well i have been busy tinkering updated from my highpoint 2072 to LSI 9207 4i4e for no particular reason other than i got it at a steal of a price. I also got rid of my 2x  studio 4u case's and custom built my own out of  old cases I had spare also installed silent fans in all my hardware so well its silent and very cool drive temps are a steady 28C to 30C under load I updated my main Spec build here so show all the changes.

    Hi Nathan

Thanks that's good to hear I am going to start re formatting my spare drives and start the migration.

I think i just got mindset by the lot of negative comments you read on the net on both storagespaces and ReFS, but I should have known better tbh I have 16 wd greens in my pool and some are now reaching the 5 year mark with no problems at all but people say don't touch them with a barge pole I think it's all down to individual usage and like you say the demonstration I had yesterday showed it just works and works very well.

I think I will set up another identical pool using storage spaces which I will use for backup and do a lot of testing in either case should the worst happen to either drivepool or storagespaces i would then just be able to redirect to either one I shall keep you informed.

    Thx

Hi you could just buy yourself some rackmount bars off eBay go to your local hardware shop and get them to cut some 22mm mdf to your custome sizes screw the bars on there you go I built mine like that cost me about £30 I needed a case at a specific size for where I wanted it stored.

    Hi

I had the same problem scanner said that there were bad sectors but wd lifeguard passed the drives I just did a full format and put the drives back in touchwood they have been fine I think scanner is a little too sensitive at times and when it flags an error it just won't let go, to test put scanner on a different machine 30day trial and scan the drive mine came up no bad sector but in the server it still flagged as bad it does stop by the time my next scheduled drive scan came up every 30 days the drive was fine.
