2 ATA channels of same #

Jackietools

Question

Running WHS 2011 with Drivepool. Backups are extremely slow when new data is added to client. Is there something wrong with the double channels in device manager?? I have 2 ATA 0's and 2 ATA 1 channels on the server. Really like to send a picture. Again I can't upload images. Says only 35 kb allowed??

This is definitely not caused by StableBit Drivepool.

If you notice in the "Storage Controllers" section, there is a "Covecube Drive Enumerator" controller. This is what is used by DrivePool. The only other device we create is the "Covecube Virtual Disk".

However, it looks like you have two "IDE" controllers on the system. That is most likely the cause here.

To verify, you can change the "View" type to be "Devices by connection". This may be more difficult to view, but it will show you have the devices are connected.

Thanks. How to I fix this? I tried "Devices by connection". It does not show the HDD's. What should I be looking for? I also just realized I had the wireless enabled but not connected to my network. Maybe that was causing a problem as it is connected by an AV power line RJ-45 cable

If the wireless is connected, then it could cause the slow issue.

Another thing to check, the network adapter priority (will prevent it in the future).

Open the Control panel, click on "network and Internet" and then click on "network and sharing center".

Click on the "Change adapter settings" on the left hand sidebar.

Open the "Advanced" menu (you may need to hit "alt" to see it), and then select "Advanced settings".

Then make sure that the powerline connection is the top one. Once youv'e done that, hit "Ok". That should make sure that the powerline adapter connection is always the first used adapter.

Also, this:

Try enabling the 'Network IO Boost" option. This uses a bit more CPU and memory, but prioritizes network traffic over local traffic. This may help.

If not, then on both NICs, make sure that any "checksum" or "offload" settings are disabled. This use more CPU, and if not properly implemented can adversely affect your network speed and stability.
These settings are on the "Advanced" tab on the network adapter entries in Device Manager.

Thanks you've been a big help and I appreciate it. I'll try these things tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I see there are multiple checksum and offload categories for both IP4 and IP6. I would assume IP4 is used so disable all of them for IP4 and leave IP6 alone? Can't find I/O Boost option? Thanks again.

Ideally for both, just in case. Unless you definitely have IPv6 disabled on the system.

As for the Network IO Boost, since it looks like you're using StableBit DrivePool 2.x:

Open the DrivePool UI.

Click on "Pool Options".

Open the "Performance" section.

The third option should be "Network IO Boost". Try toggling it and see if it helps.

No good. With Wolfenstein program set to backup stalled at 83% again. Could it be some copyright on the game program stopping it? I had a flight sim game years ago X-Plane that had the same problem. I simply left it unchecked. May have to do the same here. Still bothers me that we can't figure this out. Thanks for your help. I'm open to any other ideas you may have.

Don't ask exactly what happened but it worked last night. Backup started 1:43 and ended 4:24. This time I actually played the game Wolfenstein (file that was not backing of 45 GB) for a bit to get it running and configured. Maybe that corrected some files that needed to be run to be able to allow them to be backed up(some type of authentication by Steam?). I guess a 2hour 45 minute backup is normal when an extra 45 GB was backed up. I did notice that a couple of check boxes where unchecked in the Wolfenstein folder even when I had checked the main folder. I checked the main check box the checked the boxes of the unchecked file folders. Don't know what they are exactly as they showed 2 periods next to them. Ill try to get you a picture of what I mean. Thanks again for all your help. Hopefully this is corrected.

I just looked in the Dashboard and the files are gone. I guess the game had to be initially run to complete the setup which somehow allowed it to be backed up. A lesson learned. There were more than double the amount of files showing before I started the game and actually ran it.Untitled_zps7500356c.jpg?t=1420724954

Sounds like a chkdsk may still be a good idea here...

As for the vss error, run "vssadmin list writers" from an elevated command prompt. You can use this to ID which writer was the error, and help identify what exactly the issue was.

However, this does seem to be the "system writer" which basically means it's a disk error....
