  1. so likely a driver issue or lack of one for win 10 - win7/8 might work - did windows load a driver automatically?
  2. Hi As a test if you disable/disconnect the external esata and limit the number of drives to the ones on your m/b sata controller - does the scanner speed up? I have 18+os drive in scanner and its as snappy as you would expect there must be a controller it does not like or a conflict somewhere or a driver etc its a matter of isolating that then we can see what options can be changed - scanner has a lot of options!! Some drives dont like direct i/o poling for example What i would also do (as i had some issues) is check the event viewer in windows - look at critical/errors/warnings - for anything to do with disks/ntfs/scanner/dp/controller cards(my problem) - also if you look in the stablebit wiki it tells you how to turn on the verbose logging and where to find the logs etc - so if its not obvious you can submit a ticket to get more techy support then i can give you as i am still learning on my rig
  3. the sas cable you have wont work with a sata drive if it is a sas cable - other way around will i think -might be your problem with not seeing a drive???
  4. Sounds to me that you have issue with your hardware - probably timing out and this make scanner etc appear slow i use scanner via RDP mostly and it does not perform slowly at all - initial scan when opened for the first time after a boot can take a few seconds (18 drives) but after that its fine Can you describe you hardware/os/setup etc as you have described symptoms but have not given much detail - so cant give any sepcifics
  5. the odd message is because it has been configured before and not set to default before you got it no drivers - os will not see the disks - 99% of the time - can be handy for testing yes i was looking for win 10 drivers for 92xx cards and they appear not to exist 2012r2 should be fine as Chris uses them with Essentials - similar code base sounds like you need some new cables you want some sas to sata break out cables - e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01HZFUNVS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Make sure you get forward cables as they are directional get the wrong one and it will not work - i have the above works fine on my hba - although they are quite short - but you can get various lengths Before you load any drives in r2 - i would have a good look at the card bios and see what options are set or not - and check if the card needs a drive attached to work at all - some do some dont - my RocketRaids "work" fine with no disks - basically you want it with no raid configured and single disks so essentially the card does a pass through and does not do anything more etc - if it shows a disk as legacy - it just means its not a raid disk and it does not recognise it as such - which is actually what you want. If you still get problems/issues - then flash to IT mode - not sure if there is a performance benefit with IT mode Have fun - and welcome to the world of lots of disks
  6. you can communicate between instances of DP - but thats probably not what you mean i think you mean a VJBOD - Virtual Just a bunch of disks - or a distributed SAN If so then ASAIK then No - think drive bender does have a network option although dont know much about that or link the servers by fibre would be another option
  7. just putting it in and booting is not going to damage you server - connect it to a spare drive and see if you can see it - or lob it in your win 10 pc - windows will probably recognise it being a dell product if its in ir mode and not been configured before it should still work fine and pass through drives as singles - if not you can probably reset the card bios to defaults as for dvd drives they may not be supported on the controller some dont
  8. "The poster above is incorrect. Google Drive remains unlimited for businesses, nonprofits, and schools. I have my unlimited Drive account as an alumni of my university, for example. " Google Drive is not unlimited anymore for the average person as far as their webpage https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375123?hl=en Although the G Suite for business may well be - https://gsuite.google.com/pricing.html depends what you qualify for It used to be available for everyone which is what i was referring to
  9. with 3 you could just use a vpn assuming you own both ends think the unlimited was for students - but was abused - got pulled - think you can find the odd bandit on ebay selling them
  10. ir - i think means raid - it gives you individual disks and no raid in raid mode it may cause problems as IIRC you have to have a drive connected to access the controller/boot to be honest just bung it in and boot the pc - see if it pops up with a bios screen that you can access - if you can make sure its set for single disks - i.e. no raid - it might say legacy drives - if it does good let it boot in to windows and can you see the drives? If so format them and run scanner in burst mode on each disk (right click in scanner on the disk) - leave the pc for several hours or over night - no errors - bob's your auntie!! if you get issues - flash it - just dont brick it
  11. i would run it again with /f and /b - which checks every block - i was waiting for Chris to chip in but he appears to be away at the moment not sure if scanner is the same
  12. Update Seeing something similar in Burst mode mostly the tasks are alternate but occasionally they happen together
  13. Update2 - having turned off the recycle bin on the drives and drivepool drive i went to the individual drives and deleted the recycle bins initially it appeared not to make any difference but after the duplication finished overnight the pool is balanced and the drives match in space used Good
  14. Update - i removed duplication the pool deleted the extra copies but not the Extra Metadata copies - still had x3 have rebooted and back to x2 copies have had a good look around and the difference is about 3meg its either in the sys vol info directory or its buried in the normal files somewhere am doing a second duplication run on BorisTest now - with new RR card - changed at reboot
  15. Chris I have been running two disks at the same time on the same controller as we discussed last night Have noticed some odd behaviour if you look closely at the bottom profiles you will see that scanner is alternating between disks - although it favours Disk 1 slightly more than Disk 2 - Disk 1 started first and within a few seconds Disk 2 Disk 1 has finished and Disk 2 is about 45 mins behind - again odd as same type of disks and normally show very similar performance Also the "Active Time" graphs are odd as its saying the disk is 98%-100% when clearly its not - because when a disk is 100% active scanner is not reading any data? Accept some of this might be MS but overall a bit odd T
  16. I will let Chris explain the chkdsk options and what they do - as some are more comprehensive than others if not done already check the smart values for both disks - although its not showing bad sectors at the moment - it may not have picked them up yet or the disk has remapped them already - hence the smart check What was the error on the other disk?
  17. Chris Was testing and ran into the warning below Under stand what it is as... but only two drives in the pool Now as metadata is meaning less how do i find the extra copy - also there are no options to delete the "third" copy I think it was already duplicated prior to turning dup on - so why would it try to duplicate it again?? dont care about the data as its just for testing purposes
  18. looks to me like plex is loosing the link with the remote media are there any special addon's / settings for using ACD with plex?
  19. what do the logs of plex say
  20. windows knows it not a physical drive - possibly thinks its a usb drive
  21. Thanks for the haswell tip that might be the issue - as my new server is haswell based - although the os drive is also an ocz but an older model - probably an different controller -- hmm You are in for a treat with nvme - have three 950 pro's - two in my Skull Canyon and one for my boot drive on my main pc those speeds are impressive and you see them in real world even when you have filled it up a bit The main thing to watch for is the heat - they get very hot even with low usage - i had mine initially in a covered m.2 slot - and 55-60c at idle and would shoot up to 70+ under load - so i moved it to an add on card which i could give better cooling to - i also removes the sticker and added several small ram heat sinks to the "card" and now i only have 35c idle Tip if it does over heat it does throttle the speed but what you also get is notice the last smart entry - lots of errors - these are when it over heats and not anything to worry about if you can improve you cooling I got that particular drive as a cheapo from Amazon warehouse - and it came with 10k+ of those - and observed that when it over headed the number would go up - having now sorted the heat issue the number has remained static - i guess somebody returned it missing the overheat issue This is the card i used (came with my m/b) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0199T2XD4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=19VN15W2TUKR3&coliid=I11ZSV1OSI2A83 No drivers needed just plug it in and your bios should see it There are several youtube videos claiming that these disk slow down with thermal throttling - but hey are mostly equivalent to a Backblaze blog in that the warning should "no brain cells were used in the making of this this video" - on the Skull i can copy say a dir of large video files between the drives - initially they copy at max speed but when the cache gets exhausted the speed drops to only 1300MB/s ( ) which is the true speed of these drives under sustained load. Yes if they do get very hot the throttling may happen but not what you would believe on first viewing. The new 960's have moved things along some more - i believe they have improved the cooling as well - but i will stick with these for now and probably catch up @ the 990 stage
  22. ha - yes well new tech is better mostly than old tech i was referring to a new client to work on ps4 rather than dlna which i try and avoid if i can as its all or nothing generally
  23. Another thing to check is if you build an array of say 5 disks - check the free space at the end - for me storage spaces lost a whole disks worth of space extra than it should have i.e. it had the space of a raid5 4 disks array rather than the space of a 5 disk raid5 when i looked this up its a know error and there is another long complicated vague process to go through to get your space correctly in powershell This may be fixed in 2016 but this was with anniversary win 10 pro 64bit - so i would not be surprised if it is not I also (as a test) built an array on a usb3 enclosure of 5 disks and it was fine initially then disappeared a few days later - windows just could not see it - no matter how many reboots/ disconnects /reconnects i tried this was more than enough for me to run for the hills - there was nothing wrong with the enclosure as i have used it since and as it did before it runs fine and so were the disks Good luck with your tests and you may get different results
