  1. no need to move anything or remove a drive form the pool if you uninstall DP the data will remain as is assuming none of your dp data is on you os drive - i.e. its not part of the pool - then you can re install the OS - re install DP and it will find your original pool with no problem even works if you move all or part of your drives to another machine If you do want to change the pool config - then yes after dp is uninstalled / or disable the service - you can move the data out of the poolpart dir and then delete it - although you will have to change the ownership of some directories which are system directories in the poolpart dir - system volume information being one etc done this a few times - issues with win 10 - but it turned out to be the hba drivers/bios that were the problem what card are you using?
  2. Question 1 is anybody running more than one R2E in the same domain - and have you configured the second instance as a backup DC or just joined it to the domain? Question 2 What AV are you using with R2E and if so whats the cost and experience like? Thanks T
  3. i use Classic Start Menu in win 10 - i was thinking of giving it a try in R2E - glad to know it works another couple of add on's i use in win 10 are QTTabBar and the classic explorer bar which comes with Classic Menu - nice tabbed explorer windows - with lots of other enhancements between them Why MS think 5 clicks are better than 2 - i will never fathom! - and as for win update now being even more dumb and uncontrolable - aaaah As for R2E lic on ebay well at £20 a go its not that painful if it does not work - and you can get your money back if needed
  4. Hi @asdaHP I went with 2012 RE2 because of lots of issues with raid cards under Win 10 and wanted something else to try - 2016 is a tad to shinny and new - and usually that means some issue with it being MS - and had six weeks of faffing around did not fancy anymore Also if you look on ebay you can find Essentials 2012 for as low as £20 for the lic number - i got my first one at £80 and downloaded the technet preview version and installed and activated no problem First impression is its stable and finds most things out of the gate with working drivers - what i dont like is the interface (part Win 8) and the way it forces you to the dashboard and makes finding some tools kind of difficult - i.e. several clicks to find computer management - to get to disk management - to map a drive. could be i have not found it in the dashboard but..... Overall its a server version of windows and it will do what i need once i get used to the interface or change it so its more Win7 ish rather than win 8 If you do go Win 2016 - comeback and start a thread so we can see if you find it any better - not looked in detail but i did not see a huge feature set change? T
  5. Hmm ok will add to my ever growing list of things to look at in detail
  6. yes have used gpedit a few times not secpol though lol a bit sad going through admin templates
  7. Couple of new toys to play with will be combined as one and sell the bits i dont need which should make it a neutral purchase
  8. A quick update the P410 and SAS expander are talking to each other and 2012 R2 Essentials see the P410 on install which is nice Have updated to the latest driver though as windows could not auto find a recent driver - no issues The disks i have connected do not show up in windows and you do not get a bios screen for the P410 (apart from a boot rom screen that goes by so fast you cant read it) However loading the HP ProLiant Array Configuration Utility for Windows 64-bit allows you to configure the disks - initial test is to set each disk as a raid0 on its own and then create a logical drive - they then appear in windows and as an added bonus they are not wiped it appears - need a bit more testing to confirm this. As added bonus have got a new un used R2 Essentials Lic for £20 this time
  9. So anybody else who may be wondering - i got Terry Walsh guide to setting up Essentials R2 of the WGS site Easy to follow and half way through 787 pages! Chris - Terry's book covers GP - was there something specific i should be looking for?

The enclosure i have uses a JMicron controller and i have used it mainly with WD drives - green and blue - all worked fine no drop outs i think a 20 - 24 hr backup run of large files has tested it more than once and no issues so maybe lucky with good controller but have never had an issue with usb - pen drives, external "toasters" or enclosures that i can remember
  12. right side - colours and the thin line under the files path/name
  13. Things have moved on a bit today Boris and Karloff now installed Lights dim in Warrington ! Have Essential installed on Boris - although think i will start again as the default language pack was Chinese and have a few lingering Chinese named folders which the system things are important but i have no idea what they are Why is the image upload total so low? 2 meg is tiny
  14. Can you not go into Disk Management and assign it a letter?
  15. Hi Proud owner of a shinny new Essential Server Its along time since i played with Windows server - some things are the same but a lot has changed so.... Any recommendations on what to read/watch on how to set it up and use some of the features etc There appears to be a lot of info but where to start with a good guide etc? Thanks T
  16. maybe try setting everything back to default - i cant check at the moment my machine is in bits but i think there is a setting to do this for you
  17. No backup i assume? No windows recycle bin? i'm going to assume win 10 stop the DP service ( run services.msc) go to explorer - view > options > change folder and search options > view tab > un check "Hide protected..." - apply then go to your drives and look in the poolpart directory - you should see your files or the ones you have not deleted point recuva at the poolpart directories on the three drives Please sort your backup out pronto and remember to turn back on protect system files!!!! and DP when you are done or reboot for dp

IIRC Thunderbolt III is 40gbps and Thunderbolt II is 20gbps - but only really a DAS option and for people who have MAC's - not that many devices in the non mac world with the capability and its expensive - i got it with my NUC but as yet have not needed to use it Usb 3 is 5gbps and 3.1 is 10gbps Sata Express is talked about and i have connectors for it on my m/b - i see its 8 and 16gbps which would move the bottle neck along a bit - but i think that spec has been out since 2009 - and its not main stream yet Maybe Samsung will win with nvme drives everywhere - the new 960 Pro drives look interesting 3500 MB/s Read and 2100 MB/s write - makes my 950 Pro 2500 MB/s and 1500 MB/s - look slow -
  21. Actually go to the top of a very tall tower and throw the RR cards as far as you can They crashed the server and now i can only boot if the rr drivers decide to load and then they forget half the disks!! This is after running for two days copying data with no issues at all Maybe windows updated itself and did something -actually dont care anymore had enough hassle with them Anyway my new HP 410 arrives tomorrow hopefully with a sas expander so the RR are being rma'd or being sold on ebay Avoid if you can!
  22. Well at last i can throw my 2p to this discussion about racks New Rack (27U) - obvious work in progress Boris and my Nas - Boris fits nicely in the bottom of the rack below the bottom switch taking up a smidge under 10U - NAS will sit on a shelf along with a few other things I will post the spec etc when i have it done - with a few more pics i guess - will be nice to get the room tidy as well!!!!
  23. Lol - wrong colours - i meant the colours on the right hand side - i.e. the colour of the files being copied/moved Would love to but Boris had had major heart surgery today as the RR drives finally gave up last night - god the alarm on the RR is loud (cant turn it off as no man interface - grr) - trashed the system - only boots one time in 5 - sigh - anyway thats for another thread What i mean is if a file is copying to the cache (ssd) at 118 mb/s (via network) then the thin line should only be a sixth of the way along the file graphic - even if its copying it to another drive it should be 30% tops - as dup is done in memory - so why is the disk activity bar at 100%? (ignoring the variations) - only way this makes sense is if its the HDD being copied to (ignoring the dup to keep it simple) - even though the individual HDD could write faster as the whole thing is limited by the network - yes it also depends which part of the disk is being written to (outside to inside etc). If its trying to show a burst of activity to the hhd cache then the line would jump around a lot more etc Anyway over to you to tell me i'm wrong again Hmm - well then apart from which file is being copied/edited - i'm at a loss what the display is trying to show/inform???
  24. Scanner runs as a service and is set to auto start - so assuming it is not having issues on your machine - then its up and about all the time the machine is on click run and type "services.msc" it will bring up the list of services on your pc - you can then scroll down to the Stablebit - services - ah i see you have found that If you dont see the scan process actually doing something - i would guess it does not need to - it will depend on your settings - if the disks have been scanned in the last two weeks its not going to do anything between 3-11 - no need to run a full check of your disks everyday - just the smart to see if the disk is reporting anything etc etc
  25. yes build your own and get exactly what you want They are building to a price point and want to ship large volumes If you were in the uk i could have given you one of my old ones - HAF 912 or Haf-x - great cases loads of fans and 10/13 drives respectively without getting to creative
