  1. I guess I was really asking about your mobile OS of choice, I'm a complete Noob when it comes to cell phones, couldn't tell you the difference between and HTC or a Samsung Note but I figured you'd have a windows phone. I had a company issued Iphone at my previous company, but didn't do much with it, now I'm going to try actually use it to make my life easier, and maybe play some Temple Run. hence this post.
  2. what about VPN? found a neat article about setting up VPN on the WHS 2011, and this app should work well for that, http://www.stratospherix.com/, but it doesn't help with backup of the camera roll, I wonder if with VPN, and being on wifi, would you be able to sync your phone with iTunes if you had it running on the server, interesting. Drashna, which smart phone are you using? I'm was looking at the getting a windows phone for the whs addin, but figured I'd wait to see what MS and nokia have in store for the 8.1 phone due out Q2 of next year. While I'm not a fan of the iphone, I just got the 5S, but you can cancel your contract, pay the early termination fee, sell the phone on Ebay, and end up making a few bucks.

    Hot spare option?

I'm fairly certain that feature does not exist, but if your also using Scanner with Drive pool, if scanner detects imminent failure of a drive, drivepool will try to evacuate data from the problem disk, but you must have enough available space on the existing drives. You can read more here, http://blog.covecube.com/2012/09/stablebit-drivepool-balancing-plug-ins-and-scanner-integration/.
  4. I can access my whs 2011 with safari on the iphone, but I could only download files, not upload, the option just doesn't show up in the broswer, but now with the sky drive app installed (I just realized this), I can use that to upload the file back to my server (skydrive account), so that maybe an intern solution. We've discuss own cloud over at WGS, I had some performance issues on my local network, but that could have been my hardware, HP N40l is not the fastest server, but I found it to be to complex for me, while I was successful in the installation, I don't think I want to deal with reinstallation, or managing the PHP or SQL updates,. if something broke, more than likely, I couldn't fix it. I do have high hopes with POBH, but I'm not sure what their direction is, right now it's only for desktop backup, if they add functionality for mobile devices, then yeah, this would be a good solution.
  5. Ok, question for the experts, more like advice, how are you accessing data on your server with your mobile device, for me, it's an Iphone. I've been looking at some apps, cloud storage, but I really don't want to use the cloud, So there's an iphone app called Filebrowser which will let me access my files like SMB shares, which is half of my goal, I would also like to be able to upload my photos, when I'm out and about, and delete from the phone to save space (or if I lose the phone) and skydrive seems to work for that, found another app called Tonido Desktop which may do both, haven't installed it yet. If the the app worked for streaming , thatwould be great but not necesary, so instead of reinventing the wheel, figured I see what you all may be doing. http://www.tonido.com/tonidodesktop/ http://www.stratospherix.com/
  6. Are you using a 3rd party backup solution for your shares? I was using a program that would only backup data in a zip file, no mater if you were using compression or not, and when it would merge archives, it would store a huge temp file on the c drive, needless to say I found a new backup program. my whs install with DP is taking up 33GB's.
  7. check out exacfile or file verifier plus++, these are checksum tools which allow you to export a list of your files in a folder/directory and maintain an inventory, and you can also use the output to verify files restored from the cloud are the same as the original file (compare checksum), this assumes your ran a check sum prior to losing your files.
  8. naively, I assumed there would be some intelligence in the backup cloud service to know which files where missing, and having to redownload the entire lot could prove to be a pain, I say spend the extra dough on some 2.5" drives and store them in a fire/water proof box and/or safety deposit box. regarding the data caps, I was shocked to learn I had used 50gb's of data in sept. Aug and Oct where in the 15-20GB range, I was planning a trip to Disney, and watched one youtube video after another, but honestly, I was shocked at the 50GB still, that just seems excessive, considering I don't have any streaming services. I'll stick with comcrap, as they have the most reliable connection (dsl/ and fiber are the only other options), I've standardized on the ceton tuner so I'm locked in to their cable service.
  9. This is really an interesting topic, haven't thought about this in regards to how cloud storage works. And I just got a message from Comcast, lucky me, in my market they are going to start limiting your data usage to 300gb per month, and charge an additional $10 per 50gb's, so if you have to do a large restore, plus the costs of your ISP, online backup, at least for me are becoming less and less appealing.
  10. A lot of us are running Eset NOD32 antivirus (not the security suite), it's one of the few that actually lists WHS 2011 as a supported OS, WSE 2012 is not listed, but I believe Christopher, one of the mod's for this site is running it on his box with WSE 2012. I know he'll respond as soon as he see's the post, and check newegg's weekly emails, you can get it for as low as $10. Edit-Ok, here's a link to an earlier post, he is using the Eset file Server edition. http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/207-software-i-use-and-recommend/&do=findComment&comment=1559 On other thing to mention I tried using Comodo AV, when I first built my WHS 2011 server, and had some issues with drive pool, seems every time I would highlight a file in windows explorer, the file modification date would change, very funky. Was killing my backup's, lol. didn't bother trouble shooting, just switch to ESET.
  11. could be the S.M.A.R.T. Attribute: End-to-End error, note it's at the lowest value. http://kb.acronis.com/content/9119 your power on time is 2 years, 251 days, that's pretty good for a desktop drive.
  12. GPT drives work just fine.
  13. yeah, I completely forgot about that, here's the 411 on PD's Optiwrite. http://blog.raxco.com/2012/08/27/optiwrite-fragmentation-prevention-that-doesnt-sacrifice-system-speed/, I never actually gave this feature much thought, just have it all setup under "stealth patrol".
  14. Yep, I'm all about free software, and I liked that there was a portable option, but I've been running Perfect disk since whs V1, which had dashboard integration, and while their is a still a whs 2011 version, it runs from your desktop (RDP), and the upgrade cost me maybe $10 or $15 I don't recall, but I'll keep this guy in mind for my desktop.
  15. no worries, its only the OS drive that has issues, did the same thing when I was running the HP microserver. no problems with the data drives. I forgot to mention that I've been testing Syncback Pro, and I really like this software, I'm not impressed with the user interface, but I like the fact that it's a sync software with file versioning, I have it set to hash my irreplaceable data on each backup to ensure the source and destination files are exactly the same, and if there's a problem with the hash comparison, I can address immediately. I like to ensure those files are read frequently to ensure the data is not corrupt, aswell, and exercise the HDD.
  16. also confirm the model number of your enclosure, the model you provided is USB 2, that could be the issue if it is USB 2.
  17. The TR4UT-B is listed as being USB 2.0/esata, TR4UT+B is listed as USB 3.0/esata, to answer your question, yeah, 36 hours is a long time for one 2TB drive on USB 3.0, for USB 2.0 that might be correct. Are the drives over heating in the enclosure? Scanner will throttle the performance back if your hitting the max temp setting, I'm not familiar with this enclosure, but if you have a manual fan control kick it up to full speed, when scanner is running. Also, if your accessing those disks for other requirements, scanner will stop until there's little to no traffic on the controller and then restart
  18. your over my head on that question, but here are the file system filters that came back. eamonm PDFSFilter Luafv DefragFS
  19. I use eset AV as well, and if you are patient, you can pick it up for $10, my mom, poor soul purchased Norton from their website and spent $70 on their product, well she got a new computer recently, and Newegg had a deal on the Eset security suite, $10, and now she thinks its not as good as the Norton. Even though her old PC, got a virus, and she was too impatient to wait for me to resolve the issues, and she spent another $75 at a computer shop to fix the virus issue, and they still didn't fix the problem. lol. I'm also using Raxco Perfect Disk Defrag, I had this on my HP MSS, and the upgrade was cheap, so what the heck. Seems to work well, but it often hangs on the OS drive for some reason, if set to smartplacement, changing to consolidation and letting it run a couple times, and then changing back to smartplacement, seems to clear it up. Is it better then the built in defrag in WHS 2011? no idea.
  20. Ah, yeah, the remote option makes sense, at least prior to the dashboard integration, other wise the only option was RDP.
  21. I'll give it a go my my test rig, HP N40L, I'm not even sure what the remote control option is, I'll check that out, but seems V1 is still the better option for WHS 2011 based on what's mentioned above.
  22. thanks for the clarification and responding to my post , I've been thinking about upgrading to V2, once a stable version was released, guess I'll stay where I am with Version 1. Looking forward to what comes next.
  23. I may have missed the memo, but what's the road map for version 2, now since it has dash board integration with WHS 2011, and other variants, is the idea here for V2 to ultimately replace V1? Seems that would be the logical path from stablebit, once there's a final, stable release, doesn't make much sense to continue supporting two Rev's of the product for the same platform.
  24. I'll be running whs 2011 until the next rev of win server is released, that's for sure, $400 for an OS is a bit much for a home user in my opinion. Great for those with TechNet and MSDN subscriptions through their employer, but not for the average joe.
