  1. I think I figured how to set a drive out of the pool without using the Remove button. Pool Options, Balancing, Balancer tab, Drive Usage Limiter. I unchecked both Duplicated and Unduplicated for the drive I want out of the pool, and it appears to be moving the data off the drive. I notice it put a blue arrow on top of the bar, and a red arrow on the bottom; I assume this means it is moving balanced and unbalanced to that point - 0%.
  2. Another question, is there a way to set DrivePool 2.x to not use a single drive unless it is absolutely necessary? For my purpose, it appears I need this type of a rule because removing a drive keeps giving me a file in use error, then the pool appears to try to rebalance back onto the drive I'm trying to remove. If I could configure DrivePool to not use the drive unless everything else is full, that should give me the ability to move as much off as possible, then deal with what is left later. Another way to do this might be to have a switch in Scanner to manually set the evacuation of the drive.
  3. I just noticed Shadow Copies is turned on for my drive pool. I'm assuming this should be disabled, but can you confirm this before I turn it off?
  4. He's using FreeDOS. For giggles, I think I'll ask them about this. I'll post up what I get in response.
  5. If you are running green drives, do a search on Google for WDIDLE3, use it to set the park time to 300. It will greatly extend the life of the drive.

    At a loss...

The drive did die. It hangs on sectors that it can't read, which was causing all sorts of problems. There's a 5TB Red in there now.
  7. It doesn't appear that Scanner reveals how many head parks have occurred, nor what the timeout is to park. Am I missing it? If not, do you think this is something that could be added?
  8. Interesting, I did not know that. And from what I've seen, he doesn't make a big effort to announce this on his website or videos.
  9. I just installed one of these 120GB SSDs in my Ultrabook and it works great. A lot cheaper than the drive you are looking at. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009GG06GC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 For what it's worth, I don't have an SSD in my server. I have never seen the need for it. I just bought and installed one of those WD Red drives in my server, but I went with the 5GB. It is just $30 more for another gig. What you'll find is that you run out of space for hard drives really quickly, I recommend going as big as financially makes sense, so that in the end you have fewer hard drives for the same amount of space. I like that case you picked out. I may have to get one of those myself. I'm maxed out in my current case.
  10. I'm doing Direct to Disk too, it really helped.

    At a loss...

That drive that says "reformatted" is dying on me. That's what is causing the issue. SeaTools says the drive has failed and should be replaced. The drive is out of warranty, so I guess I'm buying some WD Red drives sooner than I thought.

    At a loss...

Well, I think I'm getting somewhere. I pulled half the drives out and the issue has gone away. I still don't know if this is hardware or software issues, but I'm starting to lean toward hardware.

    At a loss...

The drive finally displayed, and I was able to get the DrivePool console up. It seems to be stuck on "Measuring..."

    At a loss...

Don't know what to do, or what the issue is. I have a problem with DrivePool that I can't figure out. My drives have gotten extremely slow, and I believe it has something to do with DP, or at minimum an issue with one of my drives. Since I thought the issue is related to DP, I uninstalled V1 and installed V2. It took forever for it to allow me to create the pool, and as of this minute, DP will not even open. If I click on Explorer to view my drives, the green bar at the top CRAWLS across as it is thinking, and then eventually I see no drive space estimate for the drive pool J: See attachment If you wonder why the one drive is called "Rormatted", it was so I could keep track with which of the Samsung/Seagate drives I had run chkdsk /f /B and then formatted. I did complete them both, and everything was going fine until yesterday. Everything on the PC is at a snail's pace, even though the processor is sitting at 0-1%, with an occasional 3%.
  15. BlueIris recommends i7, I know in my case I'd kill an i3. 6 of these: http://www.hikvision.com/en/us/Products_show.asp?id=9798 I just received a 7th. 2 of these: http://www.hikvision.com/en/us/Products_show.asp?id=9118
  16. No reason to be sorry, not your fault. I'm just glad that the scanner detected the issues. SMART is still telling me about all the reallocated sectors, but everything seems to be fine otherwise.
  17. Yeah, that's why I am considering a second server with VMs. I've read a lot about the SuperMicro boards and machines. I used to use a lot of SuperMicro machines back when I was still in operations (I moved to Information Security, then to IS Audit a few years back) but haven't really considered them for home use. I know a bunch of the HTPC server backend guys use them. There are some fairly cheap rigs out there that would be great for BlueIris, I am just reluctant to throw such a good PC into service just for BlueIris. Yes, I can build one cheap enough but there are some pretty fantastic pre-built systems out there for around $500.
  18. You will be notified of issues in real time. I get them all the time because it appears I do not have sufficient cooling in my server rig. I'm not familiar with that drive, but I am having similar issues with a different Samsung drive. When I tried to take the drives out of the pool to perform a full format, they both gave me CRC errors. So I ran an fdisk g: (or your drive letter) /f /B and solved the issues. I took the drives out and ran full format on them. They are appearing healthy now. I do think my issue was firmware related.
  19. I learned something today about the hard drives that have been giving me trouble. The ST32000542AS has a problem in BIOS version CC34 that causes data corruption and shortens drive life. The upgrade to CC35 to resolve this is here: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/213915en?language=ja-jp Thing is, the BIOS won't install on the majority of these drives for some odd reason. But I found the directions to force the update here: http://niallbest.com/seagate-2tb-st32000542as-cc35-firmware-upgrade/ If you have one of these drives, it's not me telling you to force this update. Do so at your own risk. WHS and DrivePool scanner still see these as Samsung drives. Mine are re-labeled Seagate. Yeah, I know, Seagate owns those drives now.
  20. I couldn't remove the drive from the pool due to CRC errors. So I ran chkdsk /f /B and that fixed the problems (took forever!). Removed the drive from the pool, which turned out to not be all that hard since DrivePool had moved most off due to the errors anyway. Then ran a full format, which took 10 hours. Put the drive back in the pool, and all is well so far. I just wish there were an easier way to do this.
  21. Not a bad idea. That'll take a few days.
  22. I'm still having issues. Once I select "Mark all Unreadable blocks Unchecked", it starts a rebalance which appears to move things around again. But then I believe it is rescanning the unreadable blocks (or something is happening), and the damaged sectors again show up, I get a warning, and DrivePool takes those drives out of balancing. It causes my other drives to go to 0 bytes free, which causes its own set of warnings to be continually popped up and emailed to me. EDIT: It appears to be a worse situation than I initially realized. DrivePool starts reporting that the available disk space is ZERO, which is causing my applications to stop processing or storing data.
  23. Looks like that did the trick. It now appears it knows the sectors are marked bad, and it's rebalancing. Thanks!
  24. Since you asked, I'll add to the thread even though it is not a rack mount system. Case - Rosewill Blackbone - http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Steel-Plastic-Computer-Blackbone/dp/B004A9XB6W PSU - Seasonic 80+ Platinum 460w, fanless (I wanted as low power use as I could get) CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 610e, 45w TPD Had to upgrade last week, now is a Phenom II X6 1090T, more on that at the end of post. Cooler - I don't remember, I built this thing several years ago. It's huge and the giant fan is quiet. Memory - 8GB (I don't really care about brands, it's Corsair though I think) OS - WHS 2011 NICs - using an Intel Pro gigabit for the network, onboard Realtek gigabit for video cameras Drives: 1x Hitachi 500GB boot drive 1x WDS WD5000AAKS - boot backup drive, and yes it's PATA 2x Samsung ST32000542AS 2GB 1x WD WD30EZRX 3GB (Yes, that's a green drive, and it's been solid as a rock) 1X ST3000DM001 3GB (yes it's been replaced once) No, it's nothing special, but it works for what I'm running on it. MediaBrowser Server 3 BlueIris 4 controlling 8 3MP cameras Plex Subsonic Server SabNZB SickRage CouchPotato And of course, DrivePool and Stablebit Scanner. BlueIris is quite the processor hog, even with everything optimized to be as efficient as possible. I was having some CPU overload issues when SabNZB went to unpack files, so I upgraded the processor. My plan in the near future is to build a second server, run ESXi, and start working with some of the open source data center tools. I have a long IT background, but moved into IT security audit about 3.5 years ago. My home stuff is the only thing that keeps me hands-on current. This server will get the 610e back, remain my disk space server, and will most likely keep BlueIris until I add so many cameras that it can't keep up. New server is going to be an i7 4790 based system on an ASRock Z87 Extreme6 board. Gobs of memory, ESXi, and solid state drive. I won't go into all the network gear, but it is all enterprise stuff - lots of APs (long 1954 ranch style house dictates it), Juniper gear throughout, etc. Cameras and some of the APs are PoE, you get the idea.
  25. OK, I have a problem where two hard drives (Samsung ST320005454AS) are showing "Damaged" with bad sectors. I ran the repair, I recovered the files, but how do I remove the "Damaged" status? It appears DrivePool is taking this into consideration and moving all my files over to the drives it thinks are not damaged. Since these were found on the first run of Scanner, I think probably the worst is over, and I can put the drives back in the pool and let DrivePool balance them. But, I can't figure out how. Oh, and something that crossed my mind, I think it would be a good addition to allow us to delete the bad files. In my case they were surveillance camera images that I really did not care about. What I would have liked to do is to delete the files and mark the sectors as bad. I'm going to date myself here, but back in the old DOS days when we used MFM hard drives, I used SpinRite (yes, I know they are still around) to scan my drives and mark bad sectors. That's pretty much all I want to do. Oh, and back then if you bought a 1:1 interleave controller, you could low level format the drive with SpinRite with data in place (no data loss) to take advantage of it. Not relevant, but had to share in case someone else is as old as me.
