WHS2011 got trashed with RansomWare, now cannot install DrivePool "0x80070643' error

smbunn

Question

I have read pages of this forum and screeds of google sceens but no-one seems to have an answer as to what to do about DrivePool no longer installing on WHS2011.

I have rebooted a zilliion times.  Checked everything as this is a brand new rebuild of the WHS2011 server.  I even managed to get Drivepool v1 and Scanner 2 to install perfectly.

But version 2 (and I tried a lot from the archives) fails every time with "0x80070643 Fatal Error during installation"

The log file just says "failed to install MSI Package"

What more can I do?  I really feel like I need a WSSX version, as my last DrivePool ran from inside Dashboard and allwoed updates right up to a month ago.

thanks

Simon

That specific error indicates that there is a pending reboot.  Try rebooting the system, and try again.

If that still has issues, try the Microsoft Installer fixit tool.

I uninstalled everything I found with the Microsoft tool and started again.  I saw Drivepool spend ages installing .Net 4.5 and then eventually it failed withg this error:

"0x800b0109 - A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate that is not trusted by the trust provider"

next steps?

I downloaded .net4.5 as a standalone install and that worked.  I then rebooted.  I then tried to install drivepool 2.0 and got:

So back to square 1.  Should I uninstall everything, or maybe reformat my disks and re-install WHS2011 from the original DVD again?

FIXED: A full re-install, then manually installing various KBs from the Microsoft catalogue, then installing .Net 4.5 was possible.  Once that was installed, a reboot and DrivePool installed successfully.

It looks like ‘windows update’ on a clean WHS2011 does not work anymore so now it makes it hard to keep this machine up-to-date.

Well, I'm glad to hear that you were able to get it resolved, but sorry to hear about all the troubles.

The first error may have been fixed by this:
https://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_F3540

The second error, "0x80070643", is definitely the "pending reboot" error code.

Also, just a heads up, WHS2011 and Windows Server 2008R2 (which it is based on) is outside of extended support for Microsoft. You likely won't get any automatic updates, past the official end of support date.

I ran into this a few months ago and lots of googling to find these random KB's that needed to be manually applied before things would work.

Windows6.1-KB2781272-x64 (GPT)

windows6.1-kb4474419-v3-x64_b5614c6cea5cb4e198717789633dca16308ef79c (SHA2)

windows6.1-kb4490628-x64_d3de52d6987f7c8bdc2c015dca69eac96047c76e (SHA2)

Windows6.1-KB3138612-x64 (update fix)

But true I am only seeing Defender updates and the custom domain stopped working awhile ago also.

It was Windows6.1-KB2781272-x64.msu that fixed most of my problems.  Once I got 'windows updates' running again I had 193 updates.  That took about 5 hours.  Then another 90 or so updates, another 2 hours, then 4 update, then 2 then finally just silverlight.

Then I found I couldn't backup any computers because EFI is not recognized without the Windows6.1-KB2781272-x64.msu update.  Then I found you can only backup a 'c drive' if that drive has the EUFI partition.  Had to create mock partitions on a few computers, got there in the end.

Drivepool is away and humming, but I have less than 1 TB of my original nearly 16 TB.  I will have to slowly pull back items from across the Internet plus I have a few backup computers around the world that have some but not all of what I lost.
