How to format in ReFS after Windows Fall Creators Update?

Question

Posted

They removed it, again!  And I'm halfway through a full conversion for my drives (memleak be damned).

Now, short of installing Windows again - is there a way to format the drives in REFS?  I can unplug them and do it via another PC, but that's a pain...

Yup - it disappeared a couple of months back in the Betas and MS announced that ReFS format support would be limited to "Windows 10 Pro for Workstations" as well as the Enterprise version (and maybe the Education Version).  Server versions of course have it.  So far I've been unable to find/get/buy any of these keys to "unlock" full ReFS support.  I'm hoping one of the hacks like before work or that MS make available "Windows 10 Pro for Workstations" keys for us single use users.

Well, keep in mind, that you need to make sure that ReFS isn't formatted with the default 4k cluster size. It needs to be the 64k cluster size, or you may run into memory leaks. Nasty ones.

So, that is probably part of why this decision was made (but who knows).

As for the keys, I suspect that they should be available "soon".  But may be only through OEM or VL channels....

On one of my PC's I've set it to delay any major upgrades for 1 year.  I'll just using a USB Dock to format my HDD as REFS on that PC till this settles down.  PITA but it works.

FYI - Windows for Workstation Pro is now on the Microsoft Store.  Just paid for the upgrade and I've now got ReFS format support back.  Cost me AUD$215 for the privilege.

You have to update the Store to the latest version.  Then do a search for Windows Pro and the option then appeared to me.  It could have been a higher cost as I had a OEM Pro lic code
