Manually move files off one disk to improve drive removal speed

jpfulton248

Question

I need to remove a drive from my drivepool. I know that I am supposed to just click remove and let the balancer handle unloading the data but it is soo slow. So instead of doing that I changed the settings so that the drive-to-be-removed would not be used for Dupicated or Unduplicated data. This is causing the balancer again to handle the unloading of the data and rebalancing on to the remaining two drives in the drivepool. The problem is that this seems to be even slower! I'm at the point where I want to just do a standard "Move" of files from one disk to another. Will doing that mess everything up?

Yes, this is slower than a straight file move operation.  This is actually intentional, as this is done to prevent performance impact while balancing data.

That said, if you really feel like you must, you can *manually* move the files around.  But if you do so, make sure you stop the "StableBit DrivePool Service" before doing so, or you may run into issues.   And after moving the files, make sure you remeasure the pool.

That said, we do plan on adding a "prep for removal" option to better facilitate this (including running at a higher priority than the balancing).
