Should i see activity on the pool when its balancing as files are being moved around?

 

I do see new files being copied to the pool just nothing when balancing.

 

Also why is the balancer so slow to move files off the ssd cache - can take more than a day to clear them out - have loads of free space ?????

Nope.

 

Balancing and "after the fact" duplication are not shown in the performance UI.  

 

Only activity through the driver (the drive) is shown. 

 

 

As for "why is it so slow", that's because we do use a background IO priority, so we don't interfere with system's performance. Also, if stuff is being added while it's running .... 

 

 

That said, newer versions will allow you to temporarily increase the priority. 

And you can permanently increase this by doing this:

And set "FileBalance_BackgroundIO" to "False" and reboot.

Thing is though you do get some file activity listed when the pool is moving files from one disk to another when things are out of balance - so some balancing is shown

That makes a reasonable difference in speed - also upped the priority from -2 to 0 - will experiment further but much better
