Having issues with a few drives

So long story short been fighting with unraid for 2-3 years. I left it for windows 11 + drive pool. I been using drive pool on my home pc for long time love the software. so on this server pc i got issues with a few driives namely  ECHO DELTA Novemember Lima. I named them after the phonetic alphabet. So Delta died and went and formatted itself. I ended up taking it out and made it a external drive and now it works great. I think it was my sas controller a lsi 9200 so I swapped it with another lsi sas and I got 3 of my drives back. I had myriad of device not ready errors and corruption from those few drives. So I went into the settings of balance and said to ignore those 3 drives till we are 90% full.

 

 

At the taking of that screenshot echo dropped off and i added it back. I moved my sas card from slot 3 to slot 2 in the mobo and now im having a lot issues.

amd ryzen 5800x

 

H keeps dropping and reconnecting slowly. I made SAS adapter increase timeout to 60 seconds.

I want to put file rules into effect but it wont go into effect?

Uh... I suspect DrivePool is unable to apply them simply because the drive keeps dropping out (as whenever a drive is unavailable DrivePool will change to read-only mode to avoid risk of pool corruption), but you may wish to check the logs (gear icon in the upper right -> Troubleshooting -> Service Log) for whatever details of the problem are being reported by DrivePool.

That would make sense , now I my sas card is LSI 9207-8i (IBM M5110) , I suspect its at fault for all these errors.

 

Whats the proper method to apply the file placement rules?

 

It seems to me that the process of measuring is what knocks my disks offline. I am copying all media files off the 3 drives and disabled service for time being. I will try buy better sas card in future and keep the 3 disks as back up storage for later issues.

Proper method is basically to use the Manage Pool -> Balancing... -> Settings / Balancers / File Placement menus; some tweaking may be required if you try for something complex, and it can help to read the manual and the pop-up tooltips that many of the options have if you rest the mouse cursor over them.

Pool measuring knocking the disk offline is (in my experience) an indicator that the controller can't handle load, as the measuring process is quite intensive when it happens (it is used to help DrivePool's determination of what to balance, whether files are in the correct locations, whether it needs to adjust balancing ratios, etc).

Yeah , I do not think these disks are faulty , its the controller. Now I did just fiddle with things and at the moment its way more stable and things actually measured. For now I am moving data away from 3 issue disks.

 

Issue was I got balance to  46.2% but then I got bunch of access denied errors in the service logs

If the drives were repeatedly dropping out in the middle of writing to them, it's possible the file system on those drives (or on those sharing a controller with them) have been corrupted. I would recommend using chkdsk on them, and you might need to reset their permissions as described here.

I am very familiar with chkdsk became of that lol and I did that perm thing already! I think I had make user have all writes too. Its working but when I balance it cant access some files

The error "oplock request is denied" means that something else is locking the file. Check for other applications that may be directly scanning or modifying files within the hidden poolpart folder(s) at the time (e.g. a virus scanner or media organiser); if possible, consider excluding the hidden poolpart folders from being directly accessed by those applications (instead have them accessed via the pool drive).
