Some External USB3.0 drives not recognized by DrivePool

tcash19

Question

I have drivepool v2.1.1.561 installed on WHS2011.  It is currently providing a pool of storage from 3 eSata Raid0 drives (6 disks total) with no problem.  I also have three external USB3.0 drives attached and would like to create a second pool from two of these three drives.  The problem is that from DrivePool, only one of them is visible - and it's not the one I want to use.  The two missing drives are a WD MyBook (3TB) and a WD Elements (3TB).  Just prior to trying this I upgraded the firmware to v1.025 and v1.065 respectively.  I have also disabled the auto power management on all three drives to provide a more stable environment.  It seems to me that at a previous point I had these drives in a drivepool, but they were not stable. The removal of the auto power management has solved (I hope) that problem.

How can I get DrivePool to recognize these drives?

Are the disks showing up in "Disk Management"? (run "diskmgmt.msc")

If they are not, then something is going on ... and preventing windows from listing them correctly.

If they are showing up, then make sure they are "Basic" disks (listed in the left hand column under the disk number).

If they are dynamic disks, then that is the problem (as we don't support them for a number of reasons).

Otherwise, let us know.

Regards

Could you open a ticket at https://stablebit.com/Contact then?

Specifically, so you can grab the files from DrivePool:

http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_2.x_Log_Collection

Just do steps #6-8 and upload the files.

Also, do this:

http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Service_Memory_Dump

After doing that, try this:

Problem resolved.

Before I could open a ticket, my server crashed, so I decided to rebuild it from scratch.  After rebuilding and installing DrivePool, I notice that the two 'missing' external USB3.0 drives are present, so apparently something inside the OS was fubar'd.

Thanks for your support - and a fine product.

Well, I'm glad that you were able to identify the problem, but I'm very sorry to hear about the server crash! :(

And if that was the case, then it sounds like maybe a disk issue with the system disk... Or the drivers for the USB3 controller or externals got corrupted, maybe.

But either way, if you need anything else, let us know.
