  1. I need to move my server to the another. Current one is running windows 8.1, the new one is windows 10. What is the best way to move drive pool and all the settings (if possible) to the new machine? The ideal situation would be to have exact same DrivePool setup on the new machine as the old one, so all the programs, that use the pool could be easily transferred by simply exporting settings, reinstalling on the new machine and importing settings... How do I transfer the license? The same situation for Scanner. Whats the best way to migrate to the new machine?
  2. I am currently in the process of moving my storage drives to a new separate 24-bay enclosure. My original plan was to have Drivepool running in that storage box, and map the pool as a network drive to my new machine that I am building. However, I've realized that mapped drives have some limitations for my particular scenario. It would work, but it would be BETTER if the drives appeared as physical drives to the new machine instead of mapped. (Plex Media Server has a partial scan feature that can run a mini scan based on seeing if the contents of a folder changed. Works on normal drives, but not mapped network drives). So I did some research into iSCSI as a solution. I've seen posts that say I should have no trouble adding iSCSI disks to a pool. At the same time, what I've learned about creating an iSCSI Target using Windows Server requires VHD's. Which I take to mean I will need to make a drive sized VHD on each physical drive, add those to the VHD target, then connect to the target from my new machine and add those iscsi connected drives to Drivepool running on the new machine. Am I correct with that course of action? If I am correct, I will need to do this drive by drive in order to preserve my data. Basically my plan is: 1) Empty a drive from old pool. 2) Create VHD on empty drive that is the size of the whole drive. 3) Add VHD to iSCSI Target. 4) Connect to Target using new machine as Initiator, and add drive to new Pool on new machine. 5) Empty another drive from old pool onto the NEW pool and repeat the process. END RESULT: -All drives reside in large enclosure -All drives mapped to new machine via iSCSI -New Drivepool running on New machine see's all drives as physically attached Does that sound like a correct plan, or am I needlessly complicating things? I assume the following: A. I cannot add a drive with existing data to iSCSI Target, because it needs VHD's, which is not how the drives are currently setup. B. I cannot make a single VHD for the Target from the pool itself because a pool sized VHD is impossible; cannot have a VHD be bigger than the individual drives in the pool. I would love to hear anyone's thoughts!
  3. Hi, today I made migration of home server from WHS2011 to 2012 R2 Essentials. Same server, same hardware, only new system ssd instead of old 5400 RPM hdd. Regarding earlier posts of this forum (http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/1645-migrating-pool-to-new-machine-sanity-check/) http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/1929-whs-2011-to-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials/?hl=migration&do=findComment&comment=13432 my procedure have this steps: 1. Deactivate licenses for drivepool and scanner 2. shutdown server 3. replace ssd/hdd 4. start server, check that 2 HDDs (main pool drives) are online 5. install new drivepool 2.1.1.561 (on previous was 1.x.x) and activate it 6. pool was recreated but get another letter 7. change the correct drive letter 8. run the WSS Troubleshooter http://dl.covecube.com/WssTroubleshoot/Release/download/Wss.Troubleshoot_2.0.0.1.exe to re-share the folder 9. restart server 10. and here is trouble - in server dashboard -> storage -> server folders is only standart shares (like Users, Company, Client Computer Backups ...) but in Computer Management -> Shared Folders -> Shares I see all my shares as it was. How to correct that and make all shares to be visible in Server Dashboard ?
  4. Hi Firstly sorry for another migration post - I was expecting to find a sticky setting out step by step the process and considerations, I am migrating my server from WHS2011 onto Windows 10 Proffesional and have a couple of queries about the process and outcome. I have looked at other posts and as far as I can see the process is; de-register the drivepool license physically disconnect the pool hard drives install Windows 10 pro install and register drivepool reconnect the pool drives drivepool will find the pool and set it back up again Are these steps right? Will the current pool drive letter be preserved ? Will I have any issues with file ownership given that I am effectivly sticking exsiting data drives into a different PC Are there any other issues I need to be aware of Thanks in advance.....
  5. Hello: I would like as many details as possible about moving the disks, already in use by StableBit Drivepool to a new server (new perm home for them). I recall, from a few years ago, reading that when moving the disks to a new server, just plug them in and DrivePool will see them just fine. * What "Pool" will it see? Does it create a new one automagically, or do I create one and add them to that new pool? * If adding them to a new pool, how does duplicated files work when adding 15 disks from a previous pool? I have duplicated, sometimes 4x, files I'd like to move over. I have about 15 drives, upgrading to a new system and 4 NEW additional drives to add to the pool. One reason I picked DrivePool was the direct-access (via hidden folders though) to the files, in the event of a pool/OS failure (or if I wanted to move to Linux or whatever). Thank you!

    Migrating to New HD

Hello, I'm currently receiving SMART warnings for my main SSD, so I'm looking at purchasing a new one ASAP. I've already made a backup of my main drive using Acronis True Image 2015, so I'm ready to go there. Should I expect any wonky effects with my pool itself upon restoring my main drive from a backup? Any precautionary measures I should take before I make the switch or while restoring? Currently using Drivepool x64 v 2.1.1.561 on Windows 8.1. Thanks!
  7. Apologies for creating yet ANOTHER thread about a WHS2011 migration, and whilst I have read through the other threads, my questions are a little differernt so I thought I'd start fresh and see if I can get some simple straightforward answers to my thoughts. Basically I currenty have a 20 disk server build in a Norco case. All works perfectly, is bullet proof and I'm very happy with it. But I have been given a new 24 bay case with newer internals, ie motherboard, processor, ram and Sata card, and knowing that the newer machine runs cooler and quieter, it makes sense to make a move over to this machiine and move the old case/server on. Looking through the FAQs, just migrating seems to be pretty straightforward. Once the new system is built and up and running, I just install Stablebit, and then place all of the drives into the new machine, Drivepool should automatiucally pick up and see the pool being imported as such and create that new pool for me automatically. This all sounds great and hopefully that part will be smooth running. It is at this point that I have a query. As said above, Im moving from a 20 disk to a 24 disk array all being controlled by an ARC1280ML card which seems to have been running well up till now....my current array, whilst being run off of a motherboard and 2 Supermicro cards was using drive letters E through to X which covers the 20 drives. When I initally built this server 5 years ago, this seemed like the sensible thing to do and I didnt think or comprehend that the drives wouldnt actually need indivdual drive letters. So my quesiton is this, knowing when I import the drivepool disks into the new machine that I wont have enough drive letters, as Ill be using a system/boot drive plus ill be attaching one of more USB drives at all times too, so potentially 27+, am I able to rename the drives as drive numbers and omit a drive letter or will this mean I lose anything off of the drives. Im sure this is a simple/stupid question but I wanted to check before I start tearing things apart. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a better or safer way? Hope this isnt too much of a tedious question but Im really hoping to make this as strightforward as possible
  8. Hello, I moved most of my hard drives from my main PC to my Storage / HTPC server. Now currently I am running a - Windows Raid 1 (duplication) two 3 TB drives (personal Media up to 2011) - 1 Single 3 TB harddrive (personal other files) - 1 single 2 TB files which seems to be slowly failing (personal Media 2012+) - adding two new 3 TB drives next week all of those are backed up to the cloud with crashplan. Crashplan is re-synchronizing right now. I heard much good about drivepool. BUT I am really confused why I hardly cant find any YOUtube videos like reviews or hands one videos (is it not that popular) I just installed a trial and what i read was that it will always write data on the harddrive that is the least full. Now I always like a backdoor. And it seems drivepool gives you that backdoor. BUT and that seems to be a BIG BUT... files might be randomly on different harddrives...!!! With 5TB of Photos (lets say 200.000 photos) I see a NIGHTMARE ever wanting to change back....! I DO like the idea that drivepool could duplicate everything, but I am really scared off making a HUGH Mess!!! Why do I want to use drivepool... for example i like to have all Media in one drive... since i have more than 3 TB data i cannot physically store it in only one HD. Also currently my Raid1 cant be used from drivepool. I would have to "unraid" and go from there... (but how) any thoughts would really be appreciated!!! Let say I want to Migrate... what would be the best way to do so? Alex
  9. I'm currently building a new server based off different hardware. I currently have my DrivePool configured perfect for me, but have a question about moving the drives. One of my drives is the C: partition and in the DrivePool, so I understand that I will have to remove it from the DrivePool. For the other drives, do I need to turn off duplication and remove them from the pool to be able to move them?
