something for you to think about, and it keeps your drives from going to sleep, https://keepalivehd.codeplex.com/.
I've have some laptop grade Hitachi drives, knowing in advance that they had the same problem as the WD greens, going to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity, and with scanner pinging your drives for smart data (you can change the freqency in the settings), LCC would run up on the drives, this tool, rights a small file every few second and keeps them spinning.  After 3 years and 190 days on one drive, and 3 years 250 days on the other drive, they drives are still going strong, the drive letter was changed for one of the drives, something I did and forgot to update the tool, and the LCC is over 500K on that one, but 5347 on the other one.

I just noticed this as well.  Hum, hate to see it go, WGS was like my first my first experience into the world of home servers, it's like a part of me has gone missing.  I don't frequent the forms as much as I use too, not doing anything new to my setup, and my WHS2011 server keeps chugging away with DP and scanner, MCE, ceton ETH, etc, etc.  I've been going strong since 2009(WHS V1) because of WGS, Stablebit, Homeservershow, AVSforum, The green button, and many others that no longer exist.

But I must say that I 'm looking forward to file vault this was one of my suggestions many years ago, 2013 if I recall.  You guys can all thank me when it's finally released.

I used this for over a year connecting a media pro box to my server,  worked like a charm and all smart data was passed to scanner for the 4 drives in the box.

Haven't been here in while.   I haven't had any issues, I'm still humming along with WHS2011 with DP and Scanner.

For both of you, one thing that may help, is throttling the SMART queries. We do run these pretty often, as it usually shouldn't be an issue. But for some drives/controller combinations, it can cause issues.

    http://stablebit.com/Support/Scanner/2.X/Manual?Section=SMART
You can throttle how often the queries occur, or set them to only occur during the work/scanning window.  That may help with the LCC increasing.

This has become the most important aspect when purchasing drives for me. How long they are covered for is more important than any other aspect, IMO.

You should get Security Updates on V1 for a few more months, it's based on server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 support is ending July 14, 2015.  You should be good on Security updates through January 2020 on WHS 2011, it's based on Server 2008.   As far as minimum requirements, most of folks started running it on WHS 2011 on an HP Micro Server N36l,  AMD Athlon II NEO N36L 1.3 GHz, this was dual core proc,  passmark of 809,  it came stock with 2GB's ram, but most upgraded to 4GB min,   I'm still running DP and Scaner on a HP Micorserver N40l, system performance is slow when you RDP, but overall it's still a capable file server.

this made me laugh, a Intel Xeon Processor 3.0 GHz processor from the DL380 G4, has a pass mark of 398, much lower than I expected, the 3.6 has a passmark of 500.  makes the micro server look like a beast.

As far as confirmed minimal requirements,  I'll leave that for some one else.

Edit,  added "security updates", which is the most important for any server touching the internet.

I'd be careful going with any of the current 2.5" drives geared for laptops, excluding the 2.5 WD red, many if not all of them have head parking issues which plays into the systems time out/sleep features and saves battery life for laptops. I was going to go with a 2.5" black, but I found mixed reviews, some complained about the head parking, while others did not, so I went with a SSD.   The issue with the head parking is that drives have so many load cycle counts before the drive starts throwing smart errors when you hit the max.  I have a couple 2.5 HGST drives, that i use a program to write data to them every 8 seconds which keeps the heads from parking.

there's no reason to go mechanical at this point for the OS drive, SSD's are too cheap.  Use the built in windows utility to back UP the os drive, and forget about.

    "StableBit FileSafe".
It's in the planning stage right now. What does that mean? No code for it yet. Especially as we will have to consider exactly how to integrate it into our other products. And what features it will have. Etc.
But it's definitely something we want to release.

I had every intention of buying a copy or two for same keeping prior to it going EOL around the holidays last year, completely forgot,  great OS, even better OS for the money, I paid, in the $30 range for the two copies I'm running.  What a shame.

I received a coupon in June from Newegg, 20% off all MS Server OS's, would have been a good deal to get WSE 2012 R2, but I didn't really have a need to upgrade.

I'd be inclined to use the manufacture drivers, especially when it comes the chipset and controllers to name a few.  They typically offer additional functionally over the standard MS drivers, I can't comment on better performance, performance is relative depending on your hardware anyway.  just my 2 cents.

Ok, question for the experts, more like advice, how are you accessing data on your server with your mobile device, for me, it's an Iphone.  I've been looking at some apps, cloud storage, but I really don't want to use the cloud,  So there's an iphone app called Filebrowser which will let me access my files like SMB shares, which is half of my goal,  I would also like to be able to upload my photos, when I'm out and about, and delete from the phone to save space (or if I lose the phone) and skydrive seems to work for that, found another app called Tonido Desktop which may do both, haven't installed it yet.  If the the app worked for streaming , thatwould be great but not necesary,  so instead of reinventing the wheel, figured I see what you all may be doing.

I posted this over at we got served, and well I haven't received any responses, so I figured I'd post here with a catchy title. I completed one of the 25 essential home server projects V2  during the snow days,  Monitoring your Remote Web Access, and well, I'm not sure how to interrupt the results.  I'm getting hits from all over the world, but I can't tell if they are just hitting the front page or hacking their way in.

Christopher, was this your write up?  Interesting by the way, but now i'm paranoid.  Is there a way to tell if I'm getting hacked?

I've noticed this on both my MB controller and a PCIe sata card, when using the windows driver, drive pool will scan all drives on the same controller at the same time, but as soon as the controllers drivers are install, it goes back to on drive at a time.

I'm clearly not doing something correct.  Under Configuration>Settings>Gateway, I've added myhomeserver.homeserver.com RWA address,  New Remote Connection>connection name, I've called  it "Server name", PC name I've used both the my LAN IP and "server name", User name>I used my admin account, and admin Password.  now under user name is has domain\user,  I was only entering my user name, what would be my domain for WHS 2011?

    I'm having a brain fart.

    and ideas?

Guess I should mention I'm on WHS 2011, running the latest stable releases for WHS of scanner and DP.  This is on a clean install.
