Scanner with a RAID 5 DAS (QNAP TR-004)?

Question

I have a RAID 5 USB DAS for backups. The QNAP TR-004 with 4 x 12TB drives.

Scanner will scan the DAS volume, but how exactly does that work? It's RAID 5 so only only 36 of 48TB are actually available. Is it even worth scanning? I can't see the drives individually through Windows, only using the QNAP software.

IIt does work, as it queries the sectors on the RAID array, rather than the disk.  And that can still detect errors and cause the RAID controller to fix them.

But SMART definitely won't work here.
