Directories locked and inaccessible

csewell

Question

At times I find certain folders in my pool locked and inaccessible. I can't see the folders security settings or ownership even from an administrator's account. I can't access them or see their contents.  I notice this because I am using snapraid to produce a snapshot of all my drive's contents and it crashes because it is unable to enumerate the contents of the folders.

The problem seems to be caused by a combination of the pool and CrashPlan for Small Business, which I also have backing up certain folders contents in the pool. When I get a list of open files, I see the CrashPlan service and the O/S has these inaccessible folders open: The folders in the pool drive letter are opened by the CrashPlan service, and the system O/S kernel has the folders open on several of the drives in the pool. These are the drives where the folders physically exist in the PoolPart folder as the folders don't exist on all drives. I can fix the issue by pausing the CrashPlan backup and restarting the CrashPlan service.

Anyone else seen or noticed this problem?

If you're on the stable release of StableBit DrivePool (2.1.1.561), and folders are being moved/deleted, then I think I know what the issue is.

In this case, try grabbing the public beta version, and see if this helps.

Otherwise, does rebooting the system make the folder accessible?
If so, then ... well definitely upgrade. And if it's still happening, then let us know.
But if not, then you need to run "chkdsk /f" on each of the drives in the system.

And worst case, enabling logging and try to reproduce the issue:

I've just downloaded and installed the RC (900) and will give it try and let you know. The locked and inaccessible folder  just happened again.  The folder contained a TV episode I watched through Plex and then deleted through Plex, leaving the folder empty. The folder then became locked, with a no privilege error when I tried to open it.  I took a look at open files on the system, and the CrashPlan backup service had the DrivePool letter open plus the folder on all the individual drives that are part of the pool.  I restarted the CrashPlan service and the folder became accessible.

This DrivePool folder is one of the ones automatically backed up by CrashPlan.  I don't know if it was being backed up at the time the file in it was deleted through Plex, but I'm not sure why CrashPlan would open an empty folder.

Then, most likely, CrashPlan is actually locking the folder.

Try disabling CrashPlan, and see if this happens.

Yes I'm sure it is narrowed down to the CrashPlan service, since that's the only running program that has the folder open at the time it's locked, and no longer has it open when it's restarted and the folder becomes available again. Stopping my backups seems rather drastic. I'll see if I can reproduce it with file system logging enabled.

I see another thread where a user has permission problems with folders and it sounds like the same type of issue.  When the folder is locked I can't view or change the permissions or owner, even though I am logged on as an administrator.

A lot of these issues are related to a bug in the release version.  Deletes/moves are handled in a very odd way, that we weren't doing properly.  Since the beta, we have been. So many of those types of issues are fixed simply by upgrading.

However, the "in use" type stuff like this, not so much that we can do.

Just in case, enable file system logging and reproduce:
