Can DrivePool Manage Remote Shares?

lavalamp

Question

Does DrivePool need direct interface access to the drives it manages? To put it another way would it be possible for DrivePool to manage network drives?

Example Scenario:

USB HD attached to a linux machine sharing the drive via SMB. Could DrivePool running on a windows machine add this network share to a pool?

If this is possible I am guessing it would break most features of Scanner?

Thanks!

Yes, StableBit Drivepool needs direct access to the "physical" disk and doesn't support network shares being added to the pool directly.

I say "physical" in quotation marks, and "directly" in regards to being added to the pool, as there are ways around this.

StableBit DrivePool supports iSCSI volumes. And you can use StableBit CloudDrive to create a disk on a SMB/Windows File Share, and that can be added to the pool.

Part of the reason for this is that the software makes use of the physical disk location for balancing, and more importantly: duplication. It wouldn't make sense to place multiple copies of a file on the same physical disk....

And StableBit Scanner wouldn't be able to access the info for the USB drive over the network in this case.  The SMART info isn't present and it isn't passed through in any way. And we don't have access to the physical disk to perform a surface scan (which is required).
