  1. When ever i try to get the smart data from my os drive - scanner has a major wobble and throws up multiple exceptions i have reported them several times scanner then bombs completely OCZ problem? intel m/b controller Dont think it did this before a couple of betas ago scanner 3122 all other drives are ok - although all now dont show the temp graph when some did before??
  2. could you swap the drives around and say put your ssd up top and the HGST at the bottom of the case? or even better get a better case!
  3. I am going to over provision my SSD especially as they are being used as CACHE drives and as such will get used more then the average pool drive So - i can do this directly on the drive using diskpart etc Just curious if i did this while the drive was part of the pool (assuming it not being written to etc) - is DP going to be ok with a drive "suddenly" getting smaller by 10% or will it not care? I am going to do it the sensible way (stop the services) before doing the 10% trim I would guess it will be fine as i have pulled a few drives between reboots and it does not have a major strop
  4. oh yes i have - smarty pants! and that link does not explain the colours path does not change although its trying to show disk activity ( which disk does it refer to as the numbers are wrong for a SSD cache - is it the HDD its being copied to???) - would it be more informative if it showed % complete of the copy as with large files its "stuck" at 100% for a minute or two Admittedly i am copying 20 TB to the pool which is maxing out the pool at various times

    NAS Drives

No never had anything like that happen - i usually pull them without "ejecting" but after i am sure the copy etc has finished No they are not if you buy cheap as chips of anything you get what you pay for - docks i only tend to use infrequently because mechanical drives tend to run hot after a while so just for cloning etc Been doing backups onto usb2/3 and now 3.1 for years - only issue if have had was Storage Spaces refusing to find the enclosure one day but thats another whole can a of worms..... and not usb related Interestingly over on the QNAP forums most people use USB for backup of their NAS's and apart from the odd occasion most are not reporting USB problems - possibly there are better Linux drivers than for windows - lol Never really used esata as did not get any speed benefit over usb especially a few years back - might be better now but usb 3.1/thunderbolt3 etc are here so likely it will disappear slowly unless a new Sata4/5/6... comes into view As ever YMMV to mine - may be i am just lucky

    SSD as Cache

ok thanks have 4 256 if i go to 4x dup or more likely two pools at dup x2
  7. Hi i am curious what the Disk Performance area of the DP ui is trying to tell me when copying data to the pool over the network i can see files being added to the pool and the upload/download speeds etc But what do the colours mean? Also if you have a large file the thin line below the file path appears to go backwards and forward and then settles on a full 100% width - again not sure what this is trying to telling me

    NAS Drives

Nothing wrong with usb3 enclosures or docking stations - use them all the time with no issue at all if you do get issues then you have other problems 99% of the time unrelated to the usb especially with dropped connections

    SSD as Cache

Quick question do the SSD cache drives need to be the same size?

    NAS Drives

Just a wild idea but - can you mount them to a windows folder? edit - http://serverfault.com/questions/108193/mount-network-drive-as-physical-drive- read carefully some caviats If so DP might then pick them up - although they are not NTFS drives (ext3) so you might run into some wierd errors or put them in a windows box - you will get better performance locally

    NAS Drives

Hi Drive Pool is for managing local drives on the server/pc - not "remote" drives Are the drives in a NAS/enclosure separate from the pc running DB?
  12. Thanks again Well after a lot of digging around in ebay's darkest depth Russia, Lavtia, Spain ... you can find some real bargains in Germany! So i was basically looking for cards that were compatible (same make and generation - trying to keep things simple) with Win 10 and thats my mistake when i started this search - although a very few new cards do have Win 10 drivers the vast majority dont - what i had forgotten was that the majority of these cards are only used in servers and as 2016 is all shiny and bushy tailed the majority of the big players have not bothered to produce Win 10 drivers waiting for 2016 to come out or are not going to both as the cards are EOL. So... I decided to set my sights lower to Win 7/2012R2/2012 Essentials and see what i could find - and as you would expect the field is bigger although the choices are not huge as our Sys Admin chums tend to be a bit conservative in there choices - and the second hand/ refurb market is lively but ultimately limiting in variety. The usual suspects come up - Lsi, Hp, Adaptec etc I settled on HP kit partly because i have used it in the past and partly i found HP parts really cheap in Germany. Before i get to that ( it going to be a long post ) all the cards i was interested in, HBA or Exp were cheap in the USA mainly and the import charges ebay/HMRC apply made what looked a bargain a joke - also these sellers who mark down their product price then stick it to you on the "postage" deserve a special place in hell! The site i found in Germany is https://www.servershop24.de/ They have some absolute bargains covering a broad range of manufacturers and types of tech which i have spent a fail bit of yesterday and today wading through to chose my card/exp and a few other bits and pieces - they are on ebay if you want to use that to buy stuff. In the end i have HP P410 with 512meg cache - £47 HP 24 Bay PCI-E SAS Expander Card 468406-B21 - £33 And some SAS cables - £20 only 60% what i paid for one new RR! On there way to me Also lined up are HP ProLiant DL380 G6 2x Xeon X5650 Six-Core 2.66 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 292 GB SAS - 16 HDD bays - £375 - comes with two P410 - if you add up the bits making this server you are saving £150 -£200 on a build you own server with same spec - could not find a better deal anywhere - i'm sure there are but not in Europe that i could find a battery pack for P410 - £28 I will probably get some more cards once i have checked the quality of what i get and more Ram/HDD for the G6 My day gets better i just made a cheeky offer for a Windows 2012 Essential licence and it was accepted - £80 another bargain (tempered with is it too good to be true?) T
  13. Need more info Windows version what type of account are you logged in as when you cant create a file etc it sounds like a permission issue - i.e. you only have read access - similar to the guest account can you show us some screen shots like post 10 and 17 it simple to sort but i cant help without some basic info to start off with
  14. To close this out for anybody in the future 1. RR HBA 2720SGL cards do not work together in Win 10 Pro 64bit - I tried the Raid and Quick bios's both had same result - crashing within 15 minutes with 4 or more drives using Burn In Test 8.1 2. However if you flash the cards using the 2720_c2 Bios the cards behave in Win 10 Pro - do not fail the Burn In Test using Ver 2720c.v10 of the bios, Ver 1.0.0.0 of the miniport drivers and Ver 2.5.2.4 of the Management Program from HPT. 3. However ( ) you need to configure the cards separately - preferably in another machine - to upload the bios and then use the management programme to amend you settings in the configuration screens - or use the CLI program to do the same thing - actually quicker. Do each card one at a time and remove before putting the other one in. Once both are configured - make sure exactly the same config changes as they are going to work as one card from now on. 4. However ( yes again!). Once both are back in your target machine - connect your drives and boot up - you will see nothing in POST as the cards have it appears no raid functionality once paired. In windows you will now find the management prog - will not connect to the cards and nor will the CLI - although that lets you login - then ignores any commands you type!!!!!! So you have no way or changing anything short of pulling the cards and putting them in another machine - see above. I have a support call with HPT - being very dim and slow - but i think the have finally go the point its there software not windows thats the problem. If i get a resolution i will update this thread Couple of final things - in theory up to four of these cards can work together - verified for what its worth with HPT prior to wasting over a month faffing around. Even though you cannot monitor the cards they do work as one under windows and Scanner(3122 Beta) sees them as one controller with 16 disks and DP (727 Beta)is ok as well- so - at least the cards do perform - sorry function Only time will tell if they continue to do so and maybe HPT will come through with a fix - yeah and the orange Tango muffin - respects women!
  15. Thanks Chris Well jealous of that image - have tried to get the RR to run multiple drives at same time in scanner and two is about it - three and scanner complains about the bus being over loaded!! - although burst mode works for many drives at the same time Anyway as you know they are going back to supplier Yes one other question i had was the image for the RES show the connectors with what i assume are plastic covers - so they are 8087 connectors then - good - tech docks say so but images are confusing as for 3 it stated somewhere that you cant update the RES bios unless its connected to a Intel hba - was this a red herring? Yes SAS3 - but it appears you can get sas3 to sas2 cables - i.e. 8643 to 8087 - so in theory you could connect the adaptec to the intel and possibly the other way around as well At the moment i am leaning towards sas3 (with adaptec 8 series card) just for future proofing - combined cost will be a little more than the three RR i hope to get my money back on.
  16. Looking for some user experience Has anybody had any experience with the following SAS expanders i have my eye on? Microsemi (Adaptec) - 82885T (2283400) - http://storage.microsemi.com/en-us/support/sas/sas/aec-82885t/ or the Intel RES2CV360/240 http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/servers/raid/raid-expander-res2cv.html So after good or bad experinces.... 1) what raid card did you connect the expanders to 2) what throughput do you get when using multiple HDD/SSD - anything close to the bandwidth claimed? 3) If not connected to same make of RAID card - could you update the bios on the intel or not? 4) Do you have either working in WIn 10 PRO 64bit - any issues - does Windows see the expanders i believe it should Finally a bit confused with the cable directions do you use forward or reverse breakout cables from the expander to the HDD? and also are there any issues with the Adaptec and cables from miniSAS (8087) to miniSAS HD (8643) - i assume these are bi directional? Lost of questions - just been burnt with Highpoint controllers not working together so want to get it right this time Thanks
  17. Interesting discussion Am i right in assuming that the obfuscation would prevent Amazon doing any de dup from stable bit users data stores. a) because it has a level of encryption - assuming Amazon would not go to the trouble of cracking it or using the key as and when it becomes available as its raw blocks the likelihood of two users having the same raw blocks is minimal. or am i underestimating what Amazon does with the data?
  18. no i was referring to the cage as it has an adjustable fan 120 mm built in - but as i said it probably wont fit If the drive is HGST and 7200 - i have several they run 4-5 degrees hotter than say a WD 5400 drive so i would put them in the best cooling location in your case I am going to split mine up so they are not close/next to each other as they tend to heat soak each other - and with scanner you can see they slowly climb in temp with use - but nothing to worry about - i prefer to keep them in the high 30's when in use and in the low 30's when idle
  19. not an issue that bothers me as it final got its ducks in a row - was more a report for others who may come across it while - cough - re-configuring their system
  20. lol - DRM for fans now! sounds like you need better air flow into and out of your case - i tend to blow in at the top and suck at the bottom - i have more in than out to create a "positive" pressure in the case to try and keep the dust bunnies at bay Looking at the case for a t20 it looks like it has a non standard front so this may not work but have a look at this from Icy Dock https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LT4CA5Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I have 6 and they work fine and fit well into normal 5.25 bays How many drives have you got in burst mode - multiple drives give the controller more of a test - and will show up any bugs etc
  21. The server does the transcoding based on what the client can handle - as the Shield is better at dealing with different streams then the server would not need to transcode most files - i.e. pass through So it might be that you should check/amend you transcoding setting on the current plex server - or review what codecs audio and video need to be transcoded and remux them to something else that the shield and any other clients are capable of handling directly Without any info on the server or what files you are viewing its difficult to say more Be interesting to see if Amazon do query you collection if its not encrypted and if you get any issues with them de - duplicating their servers and you end up with a differnt version to what you uploaded No idea on the sharing of a cloud drive - not got to that yet
  22. I read a while back that tesla were doing some sort of battery farm for the home user - batteries more expensive than solar panels - lol - thats nuts!
  23. hmm ok another MS feature that is a chocolate tea pot then!
  24. Yes it was my test system and it did have more drive before i pulled those to put in my other machine
