  1. here is my list of requirements as they stand how. I honestly just want something I can throw just about anything at and not have it choke out: 1 file storage (Docs/Pics/Software/Video) 2 Video server (Plex/Serviio/Airvideo HD remote access)(1080p & 4k as that seems to be the next push) 3 Not a big gamer but I like the concept of AR/VR and I want to be able to do that revolution. 4 Run iTunes more fluidly 5 Remote access (run personal website from my server) 6 https://www.theofficemaven.com/ (install and run office like this) 7 Run drivepool and scanner (current set up doesn't like tons of disc activity so crashes on most scanners) 8 Run home automation (this is iffy but an idea ive been toying with) 9 Home surveillance 10 Encoding music and Videos as archival backup I cant think of anything else id want to do at this point. but with more power comes more ideas for things to do. I just want to avoid building something awesome and then cant run some new great thing.
  2. Got the Case!!! I wanted Black but I guess it was discontinued. This thing is huge. I put it next to my MSS to give perspective. Sorry for the mess had to move some stuff. My NES is sad it lost its spot on the entertainment stand. Question I had is it bad to over buy the power supply? I mean if I need 500-700 and get 1200 watts is that an issue? I would guess not except on pocketbook.
  3. Ok ill make a list of the things I envision and report back I just noticed that your in San Diego. I went to my first Comic-Con last year! I scored 4 days my first year out and this year I got all 5 days! I'm SD bound in July.
  4. This will literally be my first hardware build. I think I'm a 1 - 2 out of 100. I know what makes me difficult but we all start somewhere.
  5. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/origenae-s21t-htpc-case-with-12.1-touchscreen-display-black-ca-014-oa.html This is the case that I ordered, aside from that this is as far as Ive gotten. should I be thinking CPU or MB next? I'm happy to take this one step at a time. I want something good and quality.
  6. Ok its been a while since I posted. I've still been using my customized EX495. If I stress it out it will crash so I've been trying to keep programs turned off. Tons of Drive activity will cause issues so no Defrag of drive scanner. I've finally found the case I wanted. I should be receiving it in a few months if everything goes as planned. I need to start looking at motherboards now. since it holds 10 HDD slots 10Sata connections is a must. I would also like to put the OS on a SSD so I would like M2 support. 2 slots would be idea 1 for OS and 1 for OS back up. I cant get all this at the same time so I'm hedging my future listing out things I would like to do. I have been looking at this: https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/Fatal1ty X299 Professional Gaming i9 XE/index.asp and https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/Fatal1ty Z370 Professional Gaming i7/index.asp Since I'm not much of a gamer I am not sure if this is the area I should be looking at. I just want something that does anything I throw at it. I am all over the place. I plan on doing the build in stages. so any help would be greatly appreciated.
  7. I got a little overwhelmed with the thought of building my own server and picked up a Gen8 Microserver. The more i dug into it the more complicated it became. I can figure out complicated but the more I researched the more limiting that server seemed to become. I was able to dump it on a client of mine so no harm no foul, It will be better used in his environment then mine. So now I'm back to figuring out how to build again.

    Random drive noise

got data off drive then as I was trying format it I got a ton of CRC errors and windows no longer would initialize it. It also never gave a Drive letter so i couldn't do any fixes on internet. I got a new drive off amazon for 40 bucks cheaper. I am of the opinion now that the 6tb drives are a lot louder then the old 4tb drives.

    Random drive noise

So I tried to capture the noise but no luck. That being said the site you game me is awesome. I think I found out that its not the fans in my PS3 but the HDD that might be making noise bad Heads. As for the 6tb issue it sounds like the noise the in beginning of this: http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/seagate (click on the sound for this one: scratching, freezing, ticking and sometimes loud clicking: ) its the first noise I believe the scratching. weird to because it stopped making that noise and when it did make it, it only lasted like 3 sec. I ordered another drive to replace it with just incase. I'm not going to risk it they are too expensive. the 8tb Archival drives are the same price not sure if good enough investment.

    Random drive noise

probably not its random. I can try when I get home maybe ill get lucky.

    Random drive noise

ill switch to that, at least that way I know everything works together and shouldn't cause issues, plus Drivepools been awesome. As for the drive its a St6000DX000 Seagate 6tb. The sound best as I can explain in writing is like when you flip a light switch slow and its barely making electrical contact, right in the middle of being off or on. but its only for a sec then I don't hear it for a while. its been 4 days and I've only heard is 5 times maybe. granted I haven't been there all day.
  12. I just picked up 2 6tb drives to give me some wiggle room while I figure out my server build wants and needs. I noticed they are pretty quite but one makes a very very random ZZTT! noise for a second then is quite again. is this normal? I thought maybe it was wake up noise for the platter but I wasn't sure. Does anyone have these drives? is this something you noticed? If I need to return the drive I would like to know ASAP obviously. I turned on duplication just incase but I'm still a little short on drives to cover everything. I did install drive sentinel as I didn't know what else to do.... I don't see anything stating good or bad. as I write this I just remembered you make a scanner also.
  13. 16 cores would be awesome. Looks like I have a ton of research to do. as I can but the items over time and put together should allow me to spend a tad bit more. as for my computer needs that is hard to say I'm not a gamer (I have a PS4 for that) but... I want my computer to do everything I need it to.
  14. Ok I'm looking at a few things to get a broad Idea of what ill need. What are the best motherboards to be looking at? I was pointed to Asus but those posts were a little old. is there difference between gaming and other motherboards? Also how about power supplies do the higher end Power supplies save you energy? they sound like they do condition power a little so that is nice. as for the chip Im guessing it will be 600-1200 for a chip. I like the idea of quad cores but 6 core sounds better. what i really need and sounds good are worlds apart.
  15. No I haven't made any real decisions yet. I waiting to find out about my tax return to set a budget. I figured this wouldn't be cheap so I'm guessing under 2000 for the build. I tried to read up on power supplies. I also noticed Xeon processors were expensive, some over $1000. I really need to figure out what kind of case I want. I've been looking at both rack mounts and that S21T still. is water cooling that much of a benefit? seems like water would be the worst conductor, my ignorance about tech, I'm thinking in relation to some thing like a car radiator. I'm surprised its not some other liquid.
  16. I saw this last night: http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/bp1sata/ they come in 1-3 drive config. they looked neat I wonder how they perform. I don't know anything about this company.
  17. Thanks Ill check that out. as for the case I agree the hot swap is nice. I have some question out to the manufactures of this case and one just like it seems like there hasn't been any real updates to the cases. I asked if they had planned on implementing hot swap. Is that something I can set up myself? or is that something that has to be build into case design?
  18. Yeah I was thinking some kinda i7 as I really like the idea of quad cores, plus MORE POWER (Tim Allen Grunt)!! To be serious Id like to get: 1) the power I need and something I won't have to keep upgrading every few months. 2) A processor that doesn't break the bank I currently have the MSS and a 5 bay esata enclosure with 4 drives. I would love to have more capacity but how big i should go I have no idea. I do like this unit: http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/htpc_s21t.htm. This way it could sit out with my other equipment. Should i been looking for something better or is this cool?
  19. With the current issues going on with my EX-495 its pushing me more and more to new hardware. I have thought about either a Mac Pro, HP Gen 8, or a DIY rack mount build. My current set up is a Ex-495 with a Q9550s processor and a 5 bay san digital esata enclosure. These are the things I would like in my next machine ( give or take): 1) Equal or higher performance CPU 2) CPU Capable of multiple 1080p streams (including Audio) Needs to support x265 and 10bit 3) File server of course 4) Hot swappable HDD (I know the Gen8 doesn't support this) 5) All Drives in same case 6) Small foot print if not rack mount (have home setup to garage where my rack is) 7) Should be #1 i don't want my power bill to go thru the roof. I would like to keep power usage at around the usage of the enclosure and EX-495. I currently use Serviio and Air Media HD to stream my media to iPhones and TV. The current processor doesn't do much stuttering if at all which is nice when watching a movie. Currently I'm having issue with remote access (can get sign in page after sign in it times out) on WS2012e R2 but I would like remote access. Help pointing me in the right direction or suggestions on what i should do is greatly appreciated. With tax time coming up i should have a little extra coin to make something decent if not nice.

    DrivePool Upgrade

I thought I read on the forum that a new version of Drivepool was being developed. Is there a timeframe for deployment?
  22. Ok I placed the file in the correct directory. Is there anything I else I need to do? also do I need to remove DrivePool.Service.exe.default.config
  23. Ok I upgraded to 2.1.1.561. I am still having the same issue it says I don't have permissions to write to this area contact admin. Id be wiling to upgrade to 2.2 if I knew my data was safe.
  24. I couldn't make this change i was told I didn't have permissions to make changes in this folder I needed to login as administrator. weird also because that is basically the only user I use. Will not being able to make this change mess anything up for me? I have already installed perfectdisk
  25. Thanks Christoper i appreciate the help as always
