CaptainCache
Is it possible to use an external USB drive as the cache drive? I'm using a Mac Mini and only have a single 256GB SSD drive installed for the OS/cache. I only see an option for the internal SSD when selecting the cache drive upon mount. 0 Christopher (Drashna)
I think you posted this in a ticket as well. The answer is "no". Specifically, the cache is treated much how Windows uses the Paging file. Because USB drives can be disconnected at any time, and because they can drop from the system periodically, it makes them a very bad choice for the cache. Meaning, if the drive drops from the system and our software needs to write to the disk (or even read), it is "very bad". In this case, the only viable option that doesn't cause data corruption is to throw a bugcheck (a BSOD). Obviously, this is far from idea, which is why we don't support USB drives for cache drives (anymore). It needs to be an internal drive or something that appears internal. Some USB to eSATA adapters will do this, but some just show the drives as removable still.
