  1. Actually I have nothing on D:, the client backups are pooled on F, G and Z.  It was the inclusion of a separate E: drive in the server backup that made the OS disk size requirement jump to 2 TB.  I.e., C: + D: on disk 0 is very small, about 100 GB total, mostly empty space.  WHS Restore should be smart enough to leave out E: in its disk size requirement because you don't have to restore the E: drive when restoring the OS disk.  Anyway, I'm only using "server backup" to provide a restore of the OS unless MS fixes this size calculation problem in the future.  A nice simple fix would be for WHS to allow multiple server backup profiles that create separate images, e.g. one profile to backup the OS, another profile to backup the other volumes.  I haven't set up more than one external disk for server backup - maybe the multi-profile capability is there with multiple backup disks, I haven't investigated.

MS included a better backup option in WSE2012, but at a $400 price tag, um, no thanks.

  2. I guess as dbailey said there is a 2 TB "server backup" size limit, with some "qualifications".  Here my 2 cents on why I think it's moot, from experience:

If you have to replace the WHS system disk, you have to replace it with a disk at least as large as the existing one.  But what this seemed to mean in reality is that you need a replacement disk as large as the total image size generated based on your server backup selections.  So, if you include more than just the "System" and "OS" in the server backup setup, your new replacement system disk has to be large enough to accomodate your additional selections (D:, E:, etc.) even though their data may be located on separate physical disks. (This behavior appears to be just bad programming.)  So I just use duplication as my "backup" for pooled data, and the WHS server backup only includes "System" and "OS", not D:, E: etc.  If you want additional backup besides 2x or 3x duplication (which remember does place duplicated files on separate physical drives), I would use a separate backup program scheduled to run on the pooled drive (or each separate drive within the pool, your option).

Restoring the system drive in WHS 2011 was easy and fast except for that replacement disk-size snag.  You only need  a 160 gig disk to restore just the OS.  But I had an E: drive included in the server backup which forced me to use a 2 TB drive to restore the OS disk.  This was a real nuisance that "wasted" a larger drive and also the time it took me to figure out why smaller disks weren't being accepted during restore.  I went back later and removed D: and E: from the backup settings, and restored the system disk to a 250 GB drive to get my 2 TB drive back.

I haven't had the pleasure of doing a restore, I tried a baremetal once for giggles, and had some issues as my MB is UEFI, but that's only an issue with a bare metal,  You can install WHS to your OS partition, then do a restore from there, this I did serveral months ago without issue. can' recall if I did just the C or both C and D.  Like you I have client backups on my D.

  3. doens't matter, the backup volume limit is 2TB, http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/28051-clarification-of-the-2tb-limit/

If you are in the US watch newegg, you can purchase acronis true image for like $20.  Peronally I use the built in back up for the OS drive, and syncback pro for the shares.   And I'm farily certain DP knows if two volumes are on the same drive, so for dupilciation, yourfine.

  4. there's still a long life ahead of WHS 2011,  the way I see it, grow your hardware first, your OS second.  Get more drives, more memory, more CPU, maybe a new case, and then you have the hardware for the new OS, when you need a new OS.

  5. This may be a silly question.  But where in the UI can I find out what version of Drive Pool I am running?

    David

if running the WHS 2011 specific version, you can see the add in version under the add in tab on the whs 2011 dashboard.   I'm not familiar with version 2, but typically with any windows software the version can be found in the help menu usually under the heading "about Scanner" for example.

  6. yep, if you want to do a direct replacement of a smaller drive for a larger drive, and you have enough room in the pool, you can remove the smaller driver, DP removes the data from the smaller drive, and allocates to the other drives in the pool, when done, power down the server, replace with the larger drive, boot it back up , add the new drive to the pool, I would reboot here again, just me it may not be required. and once your backup again, you can rebalance, or depending on hiow you have it setup, drive pool will add data to the new drive based on your balancer settings.

also, If you have enough sata ports, and HDD bays, you can certainly install the new drive first, and then remove the smaller drive second.

  7. What I'd like to be able to do is create a single pool for all my media using multiple drives (that will be extended over time by adding additional drives).  I would like to to be able to copy any file added to these drives to a hot-swap drive as well, that can be removed when full for offsite storage.

Will DrivePool handle this OOB? Right now I'm considering using the plug-in that allows me to fill one drive at a time, and then just copying the contents of that drive to the hot-swap when it fills ... but that seems less elegant than it should.

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Drivepool, does not have any built in back up features,  if you choose to backup the each physical drive or each share (which could have data stored on any drive with in the pool)  you would need a 3rd party backup or syncing application.   You can use the built in windows tool to backup individual drives until you hit the 2tb backup limit.  SyncToy is a free tool that can be used to sync you shares to external drives for off site storage, you could also use it on individual drives, but think it would be cumbersome as SyncToy needs to sync at the folder level.   Drive's that are part of the pool are not removable with data intact, once the drive is removed through the drive pool console, for the most part the data is also removed from that drive.

I've settle on syncback from my backup solution, namely because it offers several file validation features to ensure the data on the external (backup) drives is always the same bit for bit as the data on the server.

  8. oK, It's been almost two months, what's this other product mentioned in the OCT 17 Road Map post?  I'm holding off on doing a few things waiting for the announcement of this new product, the suspense is killing me. Ok not quite killing me, but I'm curious to say the least.

I've been thinking about how I can better communicate what is in store for each of our products, there are 3 now and another one in the works. Starting today I'll be setting up topics in each forum that I'll be updating on a regular basis. Each post will maintain what the future holds for each product.

I try to keep a lot of the development driven by user feedback, but most of that feedback doesn't happen in the public forum (but usually in tech support tickets). I'd just like to take this opportunity to highlight the direction that each product is heading in, a kind of roadmap.

I'll be setting up those posts today so look for them popping up soon in each respective forum.

  9. Better yet which drive are you using?  If 3 or 4tb external drives, they have some funky built in controllers they allow you to connect to any windows (maybe mac too) OS including XP and still see the full 3 /4TB as a single drive, but if you pull the drive from the enclosure, connect directly to your PC, you'll have several different partitions on the drive, is funky.  I had this happen on two different 4tb drives. Long story, it's more than likely the controller in the external enclosure.  You'll do better buying an external multi-bay enclosure and bust the drives out.  But do this at your own risk, lol.

  10. It took me about 4 days to back up 6TB's of data from my pool to external storage, now there was some down time between jobs, and switching disks, etc, but I could see it taking close to 48 hours if going non stop.  If I recall, duplication maybe throttle back a little as not to interfere with other processes too.

So how do you feel about cloud storage backup for your data? lol.

  11. The phone's are going to be used by my kids to watch movies, listen to their music, and I hope I can find a game or two to download..  You really can't beat the deal for a media player,  oh, and it has a camera for movies and pictures, I paid about the same for a Vtech camera some years ago, and aside from the fact that the Vtech was practically indestructible, it was a really crap camera, guess I need to get a really nice case for these phones.   I'll let you know what I think about windows phone 8.

Oh, and black Friday shopping was a breeze, no one was knifed or tazed in my area,  but you would think everyone would have a crappy LCD TV buy now, but nope, they were lined up at the Target to buy those POS Westinghouse TVs,  40"  for something like $200, they had a 50" element for $229,  I bet the Picture Quality is amazing on those units.

  12. Yes, it's that simple.  You'll get a warning in disk management about changing the drive letter,  files or program accessing the drive blah blah something, and may require a reboot. But it's no biggie.

  13. Looks like I'm going to get a chance to demo the windows phone 8 after all,  so what's the cheapest feature filled MP3 player that you can get these days, and I'm not talking about a $220 ipod touch, a no contract smart phone.  Bingo,  purchased a couple of nokia 520's for my kids, $60 on amazon.  I was up at midnight trying to buy them from the MS store for $50, but the site was hammered hard, couldn't even check out, and that's if I got lucky, gave up after about two hours.

We'll wish me luck, I'm about to go brave some black Friday Shopping.
