  1. ..... I run the surface scan every 7 days..... personally..

@dbailey,  that's a very good suggestion and a good link.

And if you don't mind, what did you not like about the WHS Integrity Checker add-in?

    @everyone:

Backups. If you know me from WGS/HSS, then you've probably heard me say it before, but it's always worth repeating: There is no such thing as too many backups. If the data is important, you should have it stored in multiple mediums, and multiple locations. The HSS guys suggest a "3-2-1" backup strategy, in fact.

3 Backup copies of anything you want to keep.

    2 different storage media.
    1 offsite storage site.

This helps prevent any significant data from being lost or corrupted.

The biggest issue with integrity checker is you can't schedule verification checks,  they went through the effort of making this add in, but left out this very import feature.  it will add the a hash to files automatically as they are added to the watch folders, but there needs to be a way to schedule the verification, monthly. or as often as one would like.  The other issue is that you can't export a list of your files, "an" inventory so to speak, so you have a report of all your files, file name, directory path, and hash,  I can pull a report from exact file to get the inventory, but I don't believe their report includes the hash either.  I was playing around with another program called FileVerfier++, which did a better job on the inventory report, but I settled on Exact file for its ease of use.  I hope between exact file, and integrity checker, I can identity missing or corrupt files while I still have a chance to restore from backup.

And now that I think about it, I believe I submitted this as a feature request some time last year to stablebit.  Hum, can you check on that?  I'm not sure how.

  2. This is concern I've had for the last couple of years,  Mentioned it a few times here and on other forums as well, many reasons why file(S) could maybe become corrupt, bad sectors, bit rot, HDD failure, hardware failure, power outages while DP is balancing/moving data, etc,  luckily you've identified your images, and I hope that you can restore them from a backup.  But when you have thousands of photos that you may not view for some years, you need a way of tracking their integrity and maintain a inventory of your files.    While I did purchase the integrity checked for WHS, it's not quite what I was looking for, I was able to do something a bit manual with a tool called exactfile,  you can run an inventory of all your files and create a digest,  I'm sure some one smarter than me can add some automation to this process, but you can run a digest check monthly to ensure the hash has not changed on your files and no files have gone missing, as you add new files, create a new monthly hash.  So far it seems to work, as you get a few pesky .tb files that have changed from time to time and fail the verification, and I've done test were I delete files, and they were flagged in the verification.  So doing this monthly, you have a chance to restore the file from a backup, if you never knew there was an issue, the backup would get replaced by the curpt file, or the missing file, may go unnoticed as old backups are purged.

Exactfile is a great tool, would be awesome if this tool or similar could be intergraded with Drivepool/scanner with more automated features.

  3. I can't say I understand this all completely. I have 3 PC's and one HTPC to backup. 2 PCs have < 1TB each. 1 PC has 3TB and the HTPC has round 2.5 TB. The HTPC recorded TV is not critical to backup, but the 3TB pc stuff is (this disks on this PC are broken up into partitions with none > 1TB). What do you recommend I do? I have 2 4TB drives to start and plan on adding a pair more soon. I  havn't buit the WHS2011 server yet, waiting for hardware now.

also, if your using MCE for your recorded TV, the WHS 2011 Client connector has an auto archive feature, so that your TV shows are automatically archived to the sever, and any copy freely content is available to all PC's on the network, even Pc's that are not connected to a tuner can access the recorded media folder.  Copy once programing can only be viewed by the PC that did the recording, but the data can still be archived to the server for storage.

I don't have a single drive over 300GB's in any of my PC's, everything is centrally stored on the server, after all that's the purpose of the server, centrally managed storage,  aside from the itunes library and .pst files,  there no other important data on the PC's, and as you can imagine, a clean install of the OS is breeze.  I'm looking really hard at Ihome server so I can have a single central installation of itune.

  4. Thanks, I have a better handle on the backups now. I think I am going to seperate the data from the OS, and just backup up the OS and related items on the PC, so I should have small backups.

Most of the data I want to share among my family in the house.

Still I need to play with it more.

Dude in regards to backup, if your backing up at the drive level, your going to have the same folders scattered across each drive in the pool,  and you 'll also end up backing up the duplicated data as well as umfriend mentioned, not an efficient use of space, and it can add some head searching for a specific file in the backup especially if you have 3-4-5 plus drives in the pool.   Backing up at the share level is a simpler solution,  and you don't have to worry about backing up the duplicated data, but you'll need to find a 3rd party backup software.  there are tons of free and paid options.  I'm backup using Syncback Pro, but they have a free version as well.

  5. as side from all the other challenges I've had with a sata add on card, doing a vanilla install, nothing funky, no changes to the config file,  only using drives connected to the MB, but the virtual drive pool is showing in scanner.  This happed twice this weekend.

    and ideas?

Guess I should mention I'm on WHS 2011, running the latest stable releases for WHS of scanner and DP.  This is on a clean install.

  6. I'm throwing in the towel on this whole external enclosure hardware setup.

It's time I put together a REAL server with REAL sata connections.

    http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/419-building-a-proper-whs-server-need-advice/page-2&do=findComment&comment=3008

sorry those USB to esata adapters didn't work out, i'm guessing your going to be having a fire sale on Ebay soon.

  7. Interesting, I've been using a sata card, UGT-ST644R,  with the Marvel 88SE9230 chip, and was using the windows drivers, and all was well, but I added some more drives and started having issues with the card dropping drives which is another story, but prior to installing the marvel drivers 1.2.0.1041, the system was working well, but after installing the drivers, scanner has starting giving me issues, and has completely stop working,  rebooting would not start the services.  Uninstalled the addin and tried to reinstall with no luck, simply says, Error Scanner can not be installed on the this server (WHS 2011 running the wssx install), I've removed all traces of scanner, and even removed the marvell drivers, still can not get scanner to reinstall,  so between the card wigging on when trying to use ports 1 and 2 (works find with port 3 and 4), and scanner, I have a little less hair and a missed a few hours of sleep, what's interesting, I was getting a computer monitoring error on PC, dashboard alert, but it referenced stable scanner/definition xml.config as the issue, which was even more strange since it was referring to a monitoring issue with a connected PC and not the server itself.

I've since entered a support request, will see how it goes.  Will also need to RMA the card.

  8. Strange that it only works on one.

I sometimes wonder why we go through all this trouble,  I spent over 8-10 hours trouble shooting a problem on my server over the last several days, I was having issues with a new SATA controller dropping drives, long story short,  it was my freaking Intel raid 1 running the OS,  no warning from the Intel tools, but after finally losing my mind, I unplugged the sata cable to the oldest drive in the mirror, rebooted, and the system is running like a champ, aside from the error regarding the missing drive.

    Intel's diagnostic tools are crap.

  9. Thanks, just responded.  Several of the DirectIoTest results look promising so I'm confident Alex will add support again as usual. :-)

Yeah I forgot about the smart issues, something happened after the 2.4 or maybe 2.3, worked fine before I up graded, Alex did a remote session, and everything was back up and running, don't recall what he did, but I also recall that he was going to change something on his end so that it would be a permanent fix, maybe they can pull my ticket to see what they did.    if you are are using homeserversmart, you can pull the smart data with it until you get the issue with scanner sorted out.

  10. That's partially my write up, yes.

As for hacked, .... no, not really. It just shows access. A crawler bot will generate this, and *may* be doing so.

As for checking to see if you've been hacked, check the "Security" log in the event viewer. That may indicate that better. But for the most part, no you haven't been hacked.

However, if you are concerned about this, install an Antivirus program on the server. I recommend ESET NOD32, as it officially supports WHS (without having to buy the "enterprise level" versions).

ok, thanks, I like being able to see what's going on, but not fully understanding the results can freak you out.

  11. I posted this over at we got served, and well I haven't received any responses, so I figured I'd post here with a catchy title. I completed one of the 25 essential home server projects V2  during the snow days,  Monitoring your Remote Web Access, and well, I'm not sure how to interrupt the results.  I'm getting hits from all over the world, but I can't tell if they are just hitting the front page or hacking their way in.

Christopher, was this your write up?  Interesting by the way, but now i'm paranoid.  Is there a way to tell if I'm getting hacked?

  12. Hey thanks for the idea!   I was about to drop money on a whole new server but I'll go ahead and try three of the datoptic adapters first.

If that doesn't stabilize my system, I have my eye on the

I might suggest to give one a go first,  for a couple of reasons,  I'm not sure how large your spacing is between ports but you might can do two of them one on top of the other, but there's no way to do two of  them side by side, the units would be too wide, and secondly, make sure it solves your problem,  all systems are different.

Your going from one end of the extreme to the other with the size of your sever.

  13. I'm not sure if this is a hardware, software, or disk issue as of yet...

One of my two Sans Digital TRM5B towers always goes offline when copying

multiple large files to either a USB drive or across the network. It

will often also go offline while streaming a movie. There will only be

one light on after it\"goes offline" and i must restart the server to

get it to "reattach" to Windows Home Server.  I have tried swapping the connections to the

esata card, new cables, i'm about to swap all the drives between the two (does stablebit have an issue

finding the drives in the correct place after that?  i'm using them in JBOD)

I did notice some errors in the event log from Stable bit (i will update this when i get home with the exact errors).

Does this sound like a Stablebit issue, a Sans Digital issue or bad drive(s)?

I remember seeing a post from Jazon on this some time ago, I was thinking he posted it here, maybe on the old forum, on at we got served, http://www.amazon.com/review/R3HTX1W2IBV5B2, not the post I was looking for, but the solution he found is listed none the less.

    Here's the post, http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/657/drives-dropping-important-fix-for-san-digital-multi-bay-esata-enclosure-users/p1

  14. Perfect, thank you.

What do people generally use as a backup strategy for the OS disk then?

    Adam

I'm using the built in WSH 2011 backup utility to back up my OS drive,  I'm also running my OS drive in a raid 1.

  15. I'm clearly not doing something correct.  Under Configuration>Settings>Gateway, I've added myhomeserver.homeserver.com RWA address,  New Remote Connection>connection name, I've called  it "Server name", PC name I've used both the my LAN IP and "server name", User name>I used my admin account, and admin Password.  now under user name is has domain\user,  I was only entering my user name, what would be my domain for WHS 2011?

    I'm having a brain fart.

  16. Wow, I've never heard of the Norco 20 bay servers.   If put quieter fans in could be great!

    Cheaper on Amazon.

I wonder if SuperMicro has a similar option?  My friend is a dealer and could be me one at cost.

    http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/

My USB 3.0 based system is not 100% stable. (reboot fixes things for awhile) and I'm leaning on going back to real SATA.

    Here's my complete setup:

    http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/274-1x-zotac-zbox-id-83-mini-pc-x3-mediasonic-usb-30-enclosures-x12-wd-red-3tb-drives-x1-anker-usb-30-hub/

The Media Sonic boxes support both USB 3.0 and eSATA so I could also try a new PC that supports at least 2 PCIe slots for eSATA compatible controllers.

It's the wonky controller in the Mediasonce box,  I used the datoptic USB3 to sata adapter for a while, and it's rock solid, never dropped a disk with my mediasonic sata2/USB2 box.
