  1. Appreciate the heads up about the smart data issues with Supermicro cards, but I've never had any issue with access to smart data through scanner with these particular cards. Like I said they are little workhorses! Yes I do plan on flashing my M1015 card with IR firmware since all I really care about is pass through for DrivePool. I've read a lot of nice things about the M1015. Looks like a really nice card for not a lot of money. It's pretty cramped in my current case, and I think I'm going to design a case to hold the motherboard, PSU, and three SuperMicro drive cages. I'm going to design two with the second being used as a JBOD case. That's why I picked up the M1015. I need a expander for it.do you have any recommendations? Thinking about a Intel RES2SV240 powered by a Supermicro JPBWR2 power control board which I already have. The intel board has a molex power connector, so I can use the power control board without the need for a motherboard. thoughts? This won't be cheap, but that's not why I want to design my cases. It will be pretty straight forward as all the mounting patterns for the atx board, psu, and add-in cards are standard. I thought about buying a case then modifying it, but I think I'll get the most out of a custom case. The 24u rack that I have has back posts and it will be more than enough to support the Norco case if I go that route. I really like Supermicro boards and the IPMI is really nice. When I start playing with a design I'll post a thread in the hardware section.
  2. Thanks Chris. I've been running Drivepool for some time now and there has never been a issue with Scanner having a problem with the AOC-SAT2-MV8 cards so far. They are little workhorses. I don't even use the SuperMicro drivers because it doesn't work in Home Server 2011. After some googlez, I found a thread on the on we got served and the old sage forum. Someone figured out that the signed 64bit Sonnet Technology driver works on the card since its basically the same card. The only downside to the cards is the cable management. I have 3 Supermicro 5 in 3 hot swap cages which I just love. All the cables are very neatly arranged as are all power cables in a rosewill 9 bay mid tower case. The 9 bay 5.25 slots seem to have all disappeared! You just can't find them anymore. The whole system is running off of a Gigabyte mATX board with 4 gigs of ram. It's a little cramped in there but it's nice and compact. I have a IBM Server Raid m1015 that I need to cross flash so it will act as individual ports. It's been sitting in the box for a while now. I actually do plan on replacing the motherboard with a Supermicro X7SBE I bought it because is has the PCI-X slots for the SAT2-MV8 cards. It's a good board and I have the IPMI card for it. It's ATX and it will fit into the case but it may prove problematic becaus of the hot swaps cage size. I do have a Norco 4020 case brand new that I bought from Newegg with a 120mm fan bracket. I also have a skeletek 24u rack still in the box, and a nice UPS as well. I'm renting a house right now with a garage, but I'm not sure if I'll be here back up in Oceanside to my house or in another part of San Diego, so space is a consideration for the Norco case and goodies. I think for fun I'm going to design (I'm a Mechanical Engineer) a case that will look good sitting out in a shelf for fun in Solidworks. The easy way would be to buy a 12 bay Lian-Li case and be done with it but I like the design of some of the Niveus and mCube cases. Let's have some fun and brain Storm! Thoughts? :-)
  3. Yes it is for WHS 2011. Thanks for the link. I'll save that for future refernce. Everything is back up and running now. I was able to recreate the shares through the dash board. All the shares are where they where before WHS freaked out. I also ordered some AOC-SAT2-MV8 cards for spares. I found a great deal on them on EBay. $35 each for two new cards. Well I'm happy that things are back to normal. I need to pick up some more 6TB drives over the next couple of weeks. Gotta replace one 2TB drive that has a some bad blocks and a couple other 2TB drives that Scanner says I should consider replacing. Funny thing is I've had the most problems with WD 2TB drives. The WD 1TB drives I have installed in the pool I've never had a problem with and they are older drives. At least I have access to my music and movies and performance is snappy.
  4. Well it looks like I'm back in business again! I figured out how to add the missing folders. Basically you just go in and add a folder through the dash board. Everything is on the pool so I browsed to the pool and found the share in severfolders and after Home server did it's thing it popped up. Now the pool is balancing and figuring out what data belongs to what share and how big each share is. Yes it was that simple! I was making it way harder thinking that it was going to be difficult. it wasn't in my case. :-)
  5. Something happened to my shares. Basically they were DVD's, Software, and Music. They are completely gone. The data is still there as is the actual folder structure. How can I recreate them without loosing any data. I had a couple of things go wrong with my server. I had a MV8 Sata card fail, but I had a replacement for it. Two of the ports on the card stopped working and the card just became really wonky. It ended up bringing the server to it's knees, so I just replaced it with another one that I had as a spare. Now all 15 drives are recognized. I did have to replace two drives that where dead with two 6TB drives, and now drive pool is doing it's thing rebalancing. The failed card and the failed drives may be coincidence, but I don't want to dwell on that as the server comes up quickly and is responsive now. I just need to figure out how to bring back my shares so media player and media center can see the movies and music. :-) Help!
  6. Looks like I have a two 2TB hard drives that have some bad sectors. Scanner really works! I've had more trouble with WD green drives. It's not a lot of sectors. One drive has 64kb worth of bad sectors and is effecting four files. The other drive has about half the amount of bad sectors. I'm going to replace at least one of the drives (probably both) this weekend with 3TB WD red drives. I'm going to attempt to recover from the bad sectors tonight. Does scanner mark the bad sectors after a recovery?
  7. Yes I'm aware of the hard coded ram limit. My Gigabyte socket 775 motherboard only allows 4gb on the motherboard. I'm going to get a couple a couple of sticks of DDR2 ram to bump it up to 4gb. I'm running on a wolfdale 6300 core2 duo. its more than enough for my purposes. One of the things that held me back from upgrading was signed 64 bit drivers for my Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 cards. I managed to find signed drivers. Sonnet has the drivers because they have a card that is based on the same chipset, and they loaded without a problem. The server is up running and it appears stable. Drivepool is still doing its thing, but even with that going on I'm able access my ripped movies. Yes the wiki for WHS DE migration needs a little cleanup. ;-) I followed it but when I created the shares I was expecting to see the Poolpart.{xxxxxx}/serverfolder/sharedolder on each pooled drive which is what i was expecting to see. It was confusing to me, so I just moved the folders out of the DE folder into the poolpart folder on each drive. They immediately started to show up along with the shares I created. After that I moved them into the actual shares, then I deleted what was in the drivpool store folder and started the service to restart the duplication and verification processes. It's all working very smoothly now, and I like the fact that I can have the backups in the pool and duplicated. WHS v1 was so finicky about its backups. :-)
  8. Well I figured it out. I think it was a combination of being up late trying to figure it out. For some reason, I wasn't able to find the service, but this morning it was there. I stopped the service and began moving the files on each of the drives into the pool part folders after I made them visible. Once I started to move the folders they started to show up in the shares. Once that was complete I deleted the metadata, and started the sevice. It's now remeasuring and verifying the integrity of the pool. I was a little confused with the directions, but once I started moving the folders it all started to fall into place. I'm impresssed with drivepool and its performance. The whole system is much more responsive than v1 ever was. I only have 2gb of ram, so i might bump it up to 4gb. :-) im very happy so far.
  9. well the server is up and running. drive pool and scanner are installed and running. i decided to use 1.X version of drive pool this time. I'll upgrade later when 2.x has tighter integration in the dashboard. eventually 1.x will go away but it suits me just fine. im following the wiki on moving over my files into the pool but i cant seem to find the drivepool system service to turn it off while i move the folders. i looked under sevices and i didnt see anything that stood out. can you point me in the right direction. :-) I found it in task manager, so i can kill the task while i move the folders out of DE/shares and into the poolpart.{something}/serverfolders/dvds for example. ive created the shares through the dashboard and they are in the pool as E:/serverfolders/dvds for example. when i look at the individual drives by remoting into the server and unhide the folders they are not there. all that is there is poolpart.{something}/ with none of the share folders showing up on the drives. what am i doing wrong.
  10. Yes I saw that. Might as well. It's a simple one line change to the cfg.ini file. I don't really see the point of only using part of the SSD. getting ready to do the install after running a few errands.
  11. Thanks for the reply Drashna. I read the wiki on mounting them to folder paths, and that looks like a good way to go. I'll probably do that once the server is up and running stable with the pool balanced. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Alex will support wireframes in a future version. I created my bootable usb install stick from my 2011 DVD, so now i just have to bring down the server to replace the OS drive with my new SSD then begin the installation sometime today. I've had a good run with WHS v1. The main reason I stuck with it for so long is that I didn't have a viable alternative to drive extender. I wasn't all that crazy about drivebender or flexraid, but I always liked drivepool because of its simplicity in managing drives. I'll give an update once I've completed the install later today. :-)
  12. Hi, I'm finally getting to the point that I would like to upgrade my old WHS v1 to 2011. It's getting long in the tooth and there are some add-ins that I would like to use that are not available on v1. I'll be using the same hardware only I'll be using a SSD drive for the OS that I just bought. The home server is used basically for streaming movies using mymovies, music, file and photo storage. I have already purchased a license for drivepool and scanner. I'm going to follow the wiki on migrating WHS v1 to 2011 using drivepool. After reading it, It's a pretty straight forward process. I have the necessary signed 64 bit drivers for my HBA cards. I want to use v2 of drivepool because I like the features it has, but the only niggle is that it doesn't have full dashboard integration as v1 does. I'd rather use the most current version, and I'm willing to sacrifice full dashboard integration for it. Am I really losing anything else? One thing that I would really like to see is a wireframe view of my hard drives in the dashboard. That's the one thing I'm going to miss about using the disk management add-in for v1. It was nice to be able to easily identify a drive for removal. Will Alex every provide such a feature in the future? I'm not sure how I'm able to identify a drive for removal. How does that work? All my bays are hot swap, so I don't have to take the server down. I've been watching this software for a very long time since he first started developing it. Thanks! :-)
