  1. Could you do this;

    http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Q2159701

And could you set the "StableBit DrivePool Service"'s startup type to "Manual"?

To do so, run "services.msc", and find the service. Right click on it and select "Properties. Find the "Startup type" and select "manual" from the list.

After doing this, try rebooting the system and see if it behaves better.

If not,, then please revert the changes (set the startup type back to "Automatic", and then do this:

    And then:

Thank you Christopher.  Using the links provided I was able to fix my issue.  Your time is appreciated!

  2. OS: Windows 7 x64

    stablebit version: 2.1.1.561

I have been having some huge issue, lately when I boot the machine up.  One of my services is hanging, and it is causing all of my other services to hang.  The boot time is is around 12-15 minutes.  That being said I have been going program by program trying to figure out what is causing the issue.  I thought it was antivirus for a while so i tried a few different options.  I really have just about tried everything.

I finally gave up and wiped/loaded a fresh copy of windows on the machine.  After every program I loaded, I monitored the event viewer closely to try and figure out what is causing the issue.  I have ran a scan disk on each of the drives.  256SSD OS, 4tb, 4tb, 2tb.  No errors were found.

I have no antivirus.  At this point I have DP and that is pretty much it.  Every time I reboot the machine, I get the following errors.

The moment i disable the DP services, these errors go away.  DP and antivirus are the only services that "could" cause these issues since they are the only programs that I have loaded.  Now that I don't have the antivirus, I am wondering if it might be DP.

Anyone have any ideas?  Could the service be causing me issues?

    That title should read

VDS Basic Provider/Virtual Disk Service - Error

    Not

VDS Basic Provider/Cirtual Disk Service - Error

Sorry.  I don't see how i can edit the title.

If our intent is to backup the entire pool via CrashPlan, and if we are NOT using duplication, then I might go with something like:

    1. Set DrivePool to "do not balance automatically" and TICK "allow balancing plug-ins to force immediate balancing".

    2. Turn off the "Volume Equalization" and "Duplication Space Optimizer" balancers.

    3. Turn on the "Ordered File Placement" balancer.

    4. If feasible, set CrashPlan to do its backups when you are not using the pool, so that it does not read files while DP is moving them around.

    5. Then tell CrashPlan to back up the hidden poolpart folders on each drive that forms the pool.

This should minimise the amount of wasted traffic. There might be more optimization we can do, too.

If we ARE using duplication, then things get messy.

Frankly, it would be a lot easier if CrashPlan just implemented a "skip existing files" option.

Thank you again for your help Shane.  Few Questions.

Since I have disabled "Do not balance automatically" , when should I tell CrashPlan to backup?  Should it just be late at night when I am not adding/moving files?

For the "Ordered File Placement", should I have my largest drives at the top of the priority?

Do I need to have StableBit recalibrate or something?  To move the files where they need to go based upon the Ordered File Placement Priority?

    Thanks again for your help.

Thank you very much for your assistance Shane.  I will follow your instructions and see how it all works out.  I 100% agree, though.  If CrashPlan just skipped existing files, I wouldn't have to do anything at all.  That would be idea for sure  :)

  5. I currently backup my computer with CrashPlan(http://www.code42.com/crashplan/).  Recently I had a hard drive fail.  The issue I ran into was that with DrivePool is that I don't know what was on that hard drive to try and restore.  I had to restore "Everything"  because CrashPlan doesn't not have the ability to only restore what is missing.  It is total crap!

That being said, I would like to prepare for the next drive failure.  Let's say this is my current setup

    /Movies

    /TV Shows

    /Photos

If I look at each of the physical discs, some have all 3 folders, so have a few/couple, some have none.  My thought process, and please tell me if this is poor logic, is to make sure that each physical disk has the same folders.  Even adding the folders manually if needed.  Then I can use CrashPlan to backup up each physical disk/folder.  When a drive fails, I just restore the folders on that physical drive.

    Questions

Can I add folders manually to the DrivePool folder on each physical drive?

Is this a poor way to do this?  Am I thinking about this wrong?

    Thank you in advance!

  6. check out exacfile or file verifier plus++, these are checksum tools which allow you to export a list of your files in a folder/directory and maintain an inventory, and you can also use the output to verify files restored from the cloud are the same as the original file (compare checksum), this assumes your ran a check sum prior to losing your files.

Good idea dbailey!  Thanks for the suggestion!

  7. @dbailey: yeah, Comcast... well, they have their own term for horribleness: "Comcastic".

But in their defense, it's easier to charge more for bandwidth than it is to spend millions to actually upgrade the infrastructure. Just saying.

My ISP is only slightly better than them. And they have a worst name, one that they seem to try to live up to: Cox. :P

If you intend on using the Cloud a lot, or host a website on your connection, it may be worth looking into the business accounts. They tend to not have the bandwidth caps, don't block *any* ports (80 or 25 for example, which are HTTP and SMTP respectively)

Though, for the future, you could get away with dumping the output of a dir command to a text file, and do so on a schedule.

That is exactly what I will do.  The only other option that I can think of would be to backup the absolute paths for each of the drives.  IE

    E:/Movies

    F:/Movies

    G:/Movies

The only problem with this is E could have all of the data and F and G might not have any.   There is no great solution due to the fact that CrashPlan downloads everything, even if the file is present.  Ohh well.  I still have the data and that is what is most important!

I have Charter.  No Caps (as of yet).  I also have the 100 down/5 up line.  I have never had an issue with bandwidth usage.  That even includes the month where I backed up 1.7tb of data.

  8. For performance and simplicity reasons DrivePool does not keep an index of the contents of pooled drives, so there's no DrivePool-based method to tell what was on a failed drive (if it wasn't duplicated); it's really more the sort of thing a backup/restore app should handle...

... and this is where I discover that my own choice of cloud-based backup does not offer an option to "restore folder XYZ but skip existing files". Well, that's really annoying. If I'm only missing X, I don't want to have to download X+Y+Z+kitchensink.

Hopefully your provider offers such an option. If not...is there any way you can get a list of the files in your backup to compare to a list of the remaining files in the pool?

I use CrashPlan.  You are exactly right.  It requires me to download the kitchensink to get back all my files.  I will try to pull a list from them and compare to what I have.  This will save me the bandwidth of downloading everything.

    I appreciate your help time!

  9. Is the cloud backup of the pool or of the individual drives? (I'd guess the individual drives, but just making sure)

    My drivepool is drive D.

My cloud backup points to the drive pool.  IE

    -- D:\Photos

    -- D:\Movies

    -- etc

Since they don't point to the actual hard disk, and rather to the virtual drive, I have no real easy way to know what was stored on the drive that went bad.  In theory, it could be nothing.  I just don't know =(

  10. First of all, thank you for such an amazing product!  I love the fact that I have one virtual drive and I don't have to constantly worry about filling one hard drive and leaving the others open.

    Here are my system details:

    Windows 7 Enterprise x64

I am not having  Stabit Drive Pool Mirror my files

128gb ssd (os drive, not in drive pool)

4tb hard drive (in drive pool)

2tb hard drive (in drive pool)

1.5tb hard drive (in drive pool)

The 1.5TB hard drive went bad.  I have tried everything to access the data on this drive and it is just dead.  I have the 4tb, 2tb, and 1.5tb drives backed up with a cloud-based solution.  I would like to restore the files that were lost from the 1.5tb but i have no idea what was actually on that specific disk.

Any advice?  Thank you in advance for your help!
