  1. Oh yeah, not a problem. Thanks for looking out though. Local shadow copies, differential backups, offline copies, etc... It's all good. As Drashna stated earlier, this is an option but depending on your configuration it may cause the pool condition to be "unhealthy" as it's violating the rules/balancing options for the other drives. So, as a workaround, I kicked around the idea of doing differential backups to the cloud, using CloudDrive. Unfortunately, the latest version is on shaky 'experimental' ground with Amazon. Hopefully this gets sorted out soon. Oh, and FYI; I was thinking about using my license of Acronis for differentials (since I already had a license). For some reason, it'll only let me get a sector-level backup of my DrivePool, NOT differential. Nuts! :/ So that means using Acronis for diff backups is out.... and so is Amazon.... Double Nuts.... this is turning into a pair of fat nuts. Ah well, it's still BETA. All in due time.
  2. My apologies if this has been discussed before... I want to implement the 3,2,1 rule (3 copies, 2 local, one remote/cloud) using DrivePool and CloudDrive. For important files, I would like 2 copies of files stored locally (spanned at least two disks, which I'm already doing) with a third copy stored in the cloud via a CloudDrive disk added to the pool. How can I use the balancers to enforce that a (third) copy is always made specifically to the CloudDrive disk, and not just spanned to a random third disk in the local pool? Beyond that, for less important data where a single local copy is made, how can I enforce that a (second) copy is always made specifically to the CloudDrive disk, and not just spanned to a random second disk in the local pool? Might be a nice optimizer option to add to enhance tiered storage, like the SSD optimizer. Maybe SSD, HDD, Archive, Cloud, etc.
  3. Interesting... Success!!!! So I tried the first of the two provided methods, and at least DrivePool identifies the two missing disks. Awesome! Then, I re-added them and the pool re-measures. The correct volume size was then listed (17.8TB). The unfortunate bit was that all data listed on the SSD's was listed as "Other" data. That sucked, because I know some of that data isn't being listed in the pool exists in that "Other" data. I then mounted one of the previously missing disks as a drive letter and browsed the PoolPart folder (as suggested in the latter aforementioned steps). BEHOLD! My data! Curiously though, there were TWO PoolPart folders. I'm certain this happened when they became disconnected, then re-added to the pool. So, just to be safe, since I knew all my data was in-tact I figured I'd give your second process a go. After a few tedious bits I recreated the pool and everything is back up and working normally. YAY! Drashna, you are my hero of the day, once again!
  4. I have 11 disks in this pool. 3x4TB SSHD's, 2x3TB HDD's, and 6x256GB SSD's. None of these disks are given drive letters, and instead are connected directly to the Pool. I recently purchased a new HBA (m1015, cross-flashed to 9211-IT mode) and reconnected all the disks successfully. Everything was running great, and I was getting ready to rename the disks in the Disk Manager to reflect their physical connections. Upon doing that, I noticed some disk duplication in the DrivePool (eg. The pool was showing duplicates of the same disk, new name non-pooled with old-name pooled). So, I thought I could just remove the old names, then go back and re-add the new names. Oh man, was I wrong. After doing that, DrivePool stopped even seeing two of the SSD's. Disk Manager sees them just fine; so does Scanner, Diskpart and CrystalMark. In fact, everything sees them just fine, except DrivePool. Anyone know of a way to get them back in there? Hopefully there's a quick way to resolve. I'd hate to have to blow these disks away, Diskpart/clean them and re-create them into the pool. [/EDIT] AHA!! I just found what went wrong in the FAQ! (kinda). Apparently, when I removed the disk in DrivePool via the link, I told it "that the disks weren't coming back"..... They still have data on them that hadn't yet duplicated to the archive disks (per the FAQ and settings in the Balancers).. That's kind of a stupid feature if you can't just snap them back in. The only thing I see immediately that references such a thing is here. Is this what I am experiencing? Is "erasing the DrivePool metadata" still a work-around? Has this been fixed in the past 3½ years?
  5. Honestly, I hadn't really thought about strictly using DrivePool in lieu of RAID5 too much. It makes perfect sense; but my initial plan was just to manage the OS and storage volumes using hardware, then use DrivePool strictly as an accelerator (since I'm too cheap to get a real RAID controller with SSD write-caching capability, like a MegaRIAD FastPath configuration). My thinking was, everything in the RAID 5 volume already has redundancy, but then duplicating out to SSD tiers would add another layer of redundancy and acceleration. The only things going out to the SSD tiers would be files requiring high availability or high redundency. The large remainder of the volume is a movie/television repository. Anyway; Is my thinking wrong? You're probably right though; I'd probably get far more use out of the available space just using the pool without RAID. Pardon me for being naive, but perhaps I am not reading your instructions properly. Shall I create the pool with all the disks (with unassigned drive letters), then mount the disks to NTFS folders within the pool?
  6. Interesting; I just had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with two 3TB ST3000DM000 drives. One started counting up QUICKLY to 11,800 reallocated sectors, then started counting bad sectors soon after. Then, days later, the second one jumped up to 13,200 reallocated sectors. Both drives were instantly evacuated and pulled. Completed the RMA process a while back and just got notice that they're on back order. :/ So, in the interim, I just bought (or, broke the bank) on four 6TB HGST NAS drives. Never again, Seagate... Never again.
  7. Let me preface by saying that I'm just using the trail right now, but following my rebuild (this week), and after my new drives arrive, I look forward to purchasing the license. So far, I'm really liking DrivePool and Scanner. Gonna get the bundle for sure!! OK, so, I have a LOT of SSD's that I've acquired over time. Most were given to me second-hand, but all look good in SMART, and have all tested great. Now looking to do a complex pool. I have a Dell PERC h310 HBA that bought off ebay, which will facilitate eight SSD's as follows: 6x Plextor M6S in RAID10 as the OS volume. 2x Samsung 840 EVO RAID0 as a type of "landing disk". Motherboard (ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M) controllers are: Intel Z77: 4x HGST NAS 6TB HDD in RAID5 on Intel Z77 AsMedia ASM1061: (for Misc. 3Gbps SSD's and two 1TB hybrid drives) My ultimate goal is to use the massive RAID5 volume to store just about everything. Movies, Recorded TV, Music, Documents, Pictures, etc. since it's independently redundant. (I understand on-board RAID5 isn't the most desirable, but it's the only disks on this controller, so I assume it should be fine.) I want to use the EVO's on the PERC as the "landing disk" to maximise writes to the RAID5 volume, and any older 3Gbps SSD's I would like to use to accelerate specific directories on the RAID5 volume. For example, I have a 128GB 3Gbps SSD, and this could be used to accelerate my Skydrive volume; then replace it with something bigger when time/money permits. Now, one thing I would LOVE to do, would be to only have two volumes (drive labels) visible in Explorer; just to make it easy for my wife. That is to say that I just want to see the OS volume, and the Drive Pool volume. Is this possible with DrivePool, given my design? Also, the new 6TB drives are replacing a set of 3TB drives. I know that DrivePool allows you to add populated drives, but would it be best practice to create the pool first, using empty disks, then copy my data over from the old 3TB dsks? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions anyone could provide. I'll try to answer any questions if more information is needed.
