  1. Hello,

I am in the process of transferring my data to a new machine. After having copied bulk of my data to the pool I created on the new machine and having rebooted after having applied some windows updates, I now find I have 2 pools showing up on drive pool with identical content. So far my data is safe but I don't want to inadvertently loose any of it in the process of making things right by getting rid of either pool.

So my questions is, how do I fix this issue and go back to having only one pool I intentionally created? Thanks!

  2. Actually, I ended up using the latest 2.5.0.3041 BETA, so even that didn't help.

I am using this USB controller card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPIMJEW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which has FL1100 chipset, if that is what you meant to ask.

As for the MB, it is an off the shelf Dell XPS Studio 8100 for what it is worth.

As for the disks being advanced format (4K sector size), I think I have read somewhere not too long ago that external USB HDDs in particular, do some kind of sector size trick to maintain wider compatibility which would probably explain why Windows didn't complain about the larger disk size despite being mounted as MBR. Anyway, not too sure about this topic. All I can say is, they are the off the shelf, WD My Book external USB 3.0 HDDs connected to my Windows 7 pc via usb 3.0 hubs...One of them 3 TB and other 2 were 4 TBs.

  3. Christopher,

As it turns out, I had followed the instructions exactly as needed but it didn't help. I was about to take up your offer of remote assistance when, purely by coincidence, I noticed that I had initially incorrectly added those disks to Windows as MBRs instead of GPTs since they were all more than 2 TBs in size. So, while Windows didn't complain, pulling SMART data was an issue. The interesting thing was, despite having added the disks as MBRs, Windows still reported the full capacity of the disks, not just restricted to 2 TBs.

Once I corrected the issue by converting the disks into GPTs, turns out I didn't even need "UnsafeDirectIO" setting to be enabled. The issue is now resolved and may serve as a use case of yet another thing to look at why someone else cannot pull SMART data.

  4. If that is the case, then you must enable the "UnsafeDirectIO" setting in StableBit Scanner.

To do so, use the following guide:

    http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_Scanner_Advanced_Settings

    Or use this file:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/0krodbweqz1rrc4/Scanner.Service.exe.config

Once you've created the file (or downloaded the linked one) and placed it in the correct folder, restart the StableBit Scanner service (run "services.msc" and find "StableBit Scanner Service" and restart it). Or restart the system.

Once you've done that, it should grab the SMART data for the disks in question.

    Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your quick response as usual.

Which version of Scanner should I use, the release version or latest BETA? The reason I ask is, the config file you has linked for download seems to be @ 10 times larger than the version that came with the release version I installed.

    Thanks,

    Hiranmoy

  5. Apparently I can only upload one screen print from CrystalDiskInfo due to upload restriction but I think you will get the idea.

The rest of the screen prints are similar for other drives. Oh, yes....Just thinking ahead, I also took the trouble of upgrading to latest Scanner v 2.5.0.3041 BETA

and tried to launch the service after turning on "UnsafeDirectIo", but in this case the service wouldn't even launch after displaying an error msg about incompatibility with some settings.

  6. Hi,

I have total of 5 WD My Book 1230 USB 3.0 external HDDs, and 3 of them don't display S.M.A.R.T data through Stablebit Scanner, even after turning on the "UnsafeDirectIo" on Scanner.Service.exe.config file and restarting Scanner service. Heck, I even rebooted the machine after turning on this entry just to make sure it was not user error.

To make sure that S.M.A.R.T data was available, I used DirectIOTest utility and it correctly displays S.M.A.R.T attributes after turning on the "Unsafe Direct I/O" option. The screen prints are as below as well as the screen print from Scanner not displaying the temperature data which is one of the attributes.

Just to make sure that S.M.A.R.T data was available to other utilities, I also accessed those attributes using CrystalDiskInfo and indeed they were. Screen Print attached in subsequent posts due to image upload size limit.

Please suggest how to fix the issue.

    Thanks,

    Hiranmoy

BTW, please ignore drives M: and L: on the Scanner screen print since it seems to be a issue with a particular multi disk USB enclosure and even DirectIOTest or CrystalDiskInfo cannot pull the S.M.A.R.T info for those 2 drives.

  7. That makes it so much easier. I will do it sometime over the weekend.

    Thanks!

P.S.. I gotta say....regardless of the technical strengths of drive pooling products on the market today, in my opinion, one of the most important reason that sets Stablebit products apart is the excellent responsiveness of support, either on forums or through support requests. So thank you once again for your quick response.

  8. Hello,

I want to replace my existing 2 port USB 3.0 card with a 5 port one. The problem is, all of my drives contained in the pool are connected to either of those usb ports which means, when I take out the old card, I will loose all of my pooled drives.

My question is, can I simply disconnect all the connected drives, replace the card and then reconnect all the drives to the new one and automatically regain access to the pool and the data? If not, what do I need to do to make this happen without resorting to significant interim data transfers to other PCs etc.?

    Thanks,

    Hiranmoy
