Given this usecase, is Drivepool the right software for me?

Question

So my NAS started off as a single USB drive and slowly I kept adding until now it consists of 13 separate USB drives and two internal ones.  I just fill one and when it gets full, add another new drive and another share.  At this point I have way too many shares and I upon looking for a way to combine then, I found Drivepool.

I am not interested in any backups or duplicate functionality, this is strictly to consolidate a group of non-raid drives into one single logical drive, which I want to share as SMB.

1.  I have existing drives.  My understanding from this page is that to move my files to the pool, I simple move them into a hidden folder and they will appear in the volume.  (http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Q4142489).  Can someone confirm?

2.  Many drives share the same folder structure, there may even be duplicate file names.  How will DP handle this?  Let's say I take existing drive one and add FOLDER1 to the pool following steps in 1.  And I do the same for drive two, that also has FOLDER1. How will DP handle these similar names and files in the volume?

  1. Yup, that's absolutely the case.
I'm the one that wrote that guide, actually.
  2. Identical folder paths will be merged together.  If you have duplicate files names in identical folder paths, it will treat them as duplicates.  Though, if they're not identical, it will flag them as such.

Thanks for the response.  In doing my testing, im starting to get a feel for how things work.

If the file names are the same but contents are different, a warning is given, with the only option to delete the older file (other than manual remediation).  I have quite a few files, is there a possibility of automatically renaming one of them, with maybe something like file_2 instead of deleting?

There isn't any automated renaming system, but changing just the first folder name off the root directory should get the job done. I have a set of asset directories with identical file names, but with different folder names, so there's no confusion to me or DrivePool. Manual file retrieval would be impossible, but here's hoping I don't have to.
