...What just happened?

Question

I have a 3 drive pool with all files duplicated 2, 4 times on a pictures folder.

The VM it was running in froze and wouldnt boot up because one of the physical disks was bad and unreadable. I tried everything to try to get Windows to boot with it. Nothing.

I booted without it and of course Drivepool complained a volume/drive was missing. I removed it from the pool directly. I added the new drive in, added it to the pool, done.

Thats what I thought.

I did this about....last night.

Today, Im trying to see a film and it doesnt find the file on the pool.

What  is going on and where the hell are my files?

First, I'm sorry to hear about the bad drive, as that is never a pleasant experience.

As for what happened to your data, that's a complicated question.

To make sure, you haven't changed the real time duplication setting, correct?
If you have disabled real time duplication, then likely this was a new file at the time of the drive failure, and hadn't been duplicated yet.  (this is why we recommend not disabling this option)

Aside from that, I'm not really sure, other than an access issue.
It may be possible that the system freezing up caused file system damage to the pooled drives, and may be responsible for this. Running a CHKDSK pass of all the disks may be a good idea, actually.  And check for "found.###" folders on each disk, as data may show up there.

Also, it may be a good idea to reset the permissions on the drive, in case they got damaged.

Also, check the pool itself. See if the file is actually showing up, or not,  And if it is, see if it opens properly.

And do you have anything that would have removed the file?  I know that some inventory management tools will automatically do this, causing issues if not configured properly.

No, the real time duplication setting was not removed.  I just removed the drive. Did not turn off the setting.

The file I tried to access was not new; It is a very old file as a matter of fact.

Resetting the permissions of the entire pool is not a viable solution.

What do you mean check the pool? Im trying to open the file from the pool.

What OS were/are you using, and what version of StableBit DrivePool?

As for the file, sorry, I it sounded like you may have been using something to access the file rather than directly. Sorry for that confusion.

Do you know if the file shows up in the hidden PoolPart folders on any of the disks?
