Files suddenly Gone from Drive

Sveken

Question

Hello,

So there was a power outage today, the UPS shutdown the VM host which the has a 2012 R2 VM that runs Drive Pool,

The Drive pool is made up of one local drive and 2 iscsi shares to seperate Netgear NAS systems
All on the UPS

However once the power came back on and everything booted i was greeted with the attached picture showing the 900GB drive completely empty. in drive pool it was showing the drive as normal but now 200mb/900GB used.

The other drive im still waiting to come back up from disk scanning,

Running Recuva i can see the files are infact still on the iscisi and have not been overwritten but in windows and drivepool the files have just vanished... what is going on here? is there anyway i can restore the drive in the pool properly,

It is almost like it has just dumped the data and readded a fresh drive to the pool

Please help

Does the drive still appear to be formatted? Or did it complain that you needed to format the disk prior to use?

I've encountered this back when I was using cheap-o eSata controllers and port multipliers, and I had luck doing a partition recovery.

If you've reformatted the drive it may already be too late.

Ill post the update here aswell

Thanks,

So something weird happen,

I used Recuva and got pretty much every file off that drive, as the drive wasn't formatted or anything, the files just vanished.

Copied the recovered files back onto the same drive via iSCISI on another machine (the drive pool VM was off)

After that was done i turned back on the Drive pool machine, it scanned the drive and then said everything on that drive was a duplicated file, i left it for an hour and came back to the image i have attached, It has cleared the drive again BUT all my files still exist, i have compared the files i recovered to the ones on drive pool and they all exist... but that iscisi drive is still empty...

Which leads me to believe that drive for some reason, maybe during a drive pool update? it decided to move all the files off it and onto the other drives?

Its got me super confused, as the last time i checked drivepool (about 2 months ago) files where balanced over the 3 drives but according to this only 2 where actually used

Also it seems it isnt re balancing itself

I wonder if there could be an incompatibility between Drivepool and however you have your network drives mounted?

In a tangentially related anecdote, I once used Teracopy to move my entire <file> collection to an unmapped NAS (using UNC path) and the files were just GONE.

Never appeared on my NAS, unrecoverable on my local disk. Gone.

If nobody from the team chimes in, please contact support and let us know what they say. That's scary stuff.

Here's where my situation differs, and i don't want to hijack the thread -- mine are local disks that this is happening too.  And it's weird, both PC's suddenly have this issue and are showing errors in the system log like this:

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk4\DR4 during a paging operation.

But i know the disks are fine -- i scan them with scanner and they come back clean -- and i have a hard time believing the controller card failed on both my PC's -- so i've rolled back drivepool to see if the errors stop, and i'm running a recovery program now to recover the files that were missing.

Just like to add i haven't actually lost any files, it appears the files where on the other two drives and nothing was on that drive.

Even though the last i checked files where evenly balanced over all 3,

Copying the recovered files off the drive with Recuva and pasting them back onto that volume makes drivepool say they are "duplicates"

So unless a drivepool update or something made it move everything off that drive recently i have no idea apart from magic,

Edit just to add, all drives pass Smart tests so are fine

You've posted a ticket about this and I've already replied.

That said, it sounds like a balancer moved all of the data of of the drive.
And the most likely culprit would be the StableBit Scanner balancer, and maybe the Drive Space Equalizer balancers.

Thank you for your ongoing help,

Thought i would post here aswell incase anyone else has had the issue

Thanks ,
