Questions: DrivePool and Adding HDD's

Watson

Question

I've been running my first server (a Gen8 w/ WHS2011) for about a year and I'm about to add a 4TB Red to the rack (along with the existing 60GB SSD and 2TB Red) (see image attached).

So I decided to get DrivePool so I can consolidate all my files into the one place when I add the new drive.

My questions are as follows:

  1. What is that (D:) drive? It's always been there...
  2. What's the best way to "move" everything from (F:) into the DrivePool (E:) and switch the mapped letters so that I don't have to change any file paths?
  3. Can I "move" everything from the SSD (C:) into the DrivePool and get the software to recognise that program files need to remain on the SSD and not get balanced to anywhere else?
  4. How do I add the new drive when I get it? Is it just plug-and-play?

Can't wait for feedback. Thanks, Watson.

Hi

1. i would guess that D: is a separate partition on the "C" drive - i.e. drive was split into two - probably when the os was installed

2. You can swap drive letters using "disk management" - have to change one to say H first then move f to d and then d to f

3. To move its just a copy/move as you would do for any file - no magic involved - or add f to the pool and use the "quick and dirty method" to move the files into the poolpart directory

4. Nope os remains on c - cant move that

5. attached to computer power up - windows will see the new drive and then so will dp - just click add - few seconds later drive will be part of the pool.

Have fun

I think you posted this on the Home Server Show forums too. And I think I answered there first.

  1. The D: Partition is most likely part of the system drive, and you probably have a 240-250GB SSD.  WHS2011 creates a 60GB partition to install the system to. It uses the rest of the space as a second partition.  That's is likely what you're seeing.

  2. As Spider99 says, moving stuff in the pool:

    As Changing drive letters.

You can do both, so that everything continues to work without messing with stuff.  Just keep in mind that you will need to IGNORE the warning/error message when changing drive letters and continue on with it.

  3. Open Up Disk Management, delete the D: partition, and expand the C:\ drive.

  4. Yup, just plug an play, IIRC.  And just add the disk to the pool, once it's hooked up.

If you want, we can set up a remote support session to assist you with this. If you'd prefer that, head here:
