So far its failing my tests. Can anyone help?

Been testing DrivePool and was under the impression that after removing a drive from the pool of 2 drives (that has file duplication switched on), those files would become visible and accessible via File Explorer (as usually files showin in the pool in file explorer are not visible when looking at the individual drives themselves). However i've noticed that no such files are written to the disk. So there doesn't appear to be any file duplication going on at all?

 

I also noticed that completely removing the pool by removing the remaining drive (from a pool of 2 drives) leaves a auto-generated folder that actually DOES have the users data. However the originally issue remains, there is only 1 copy of the data.

 

Can anyone advise what's wrong as I'm not going to buy this software unless I can prove that it is actually duplicating my data as its meant to.

In reference to not finding files on the first removed drive, this may shed some light on what is supposed to happen:

A couple of ways to prove DrivePool is duplicating properly:

 

1. You can browse out to the drives themselves and look in the hidden 'PoolPart.XXXX.....' folder to see what is inside.  You could compare between the two drives to confirm files are on each drive

 

2. You can run a utility that logs all file placements, to confirm individual files are indeed on two different drives.  If you're a PowerShell guy: http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/1865-howto-file-location-catalog/

What you're seeing is normal here. 

 

When removing disks, if there isn't enough space for the duplication, a copy will be removed. However, the last copy of it won't be.  

 

The reason for this, is that there are plenty of cases where you'd never be able to remove data if we refused to remove the duplicated data.  Such as if you have 10 disks, and they're all full.  If you needed to remove one, and didn't have enough space, you'd be stuck not able to remove the disk. 

 

 

Part of the issue here is that you're testing with only two disks.  If you added a third, you'd get a MUCH better view of what goes on.  In that case, if you remove a disk, the data is moved off of the disk and onto one of the two remaining disks (and this is determined by the duplication settings and the balancing settings).
