HDD enclosure smart status no read

Still tinkering around with drivepool but with another machine aside from my main PC. Anyhow I have been testing some drives in a new enclosure but the scanner cannot read the smart status of the drives. I downloaded some other smart test tool and it picks up the drives fine.

It's this model here, the Hornettek Enterprice 4X, any chance of getting this working somehow ? It's a jmicron chipset for sure as the disks are listed a jmicron hdd's, it may be a newer version of the chips they use.

eSATA isn't necessary. I wanted to make sure how it was connected.

However, if this is always on, I would recommend switching to eSATA (as it's much more stable than USB).

Could you download the "DirectIo Test" utility?

http://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/36-how-to-contribute-test-data/

Run it on the system in question, and select one of the drives in question.

You're looking for it to "light up" the "SMART Attributes" in either the WMI or DirectIo section, with a green check/tick mark.  If it does, click on the ellipse button ("...") and make sure that there is text there (not blank).

If the SMART attributes is not lit up in either section, click on the "Unsafe Direct IO" option. This will reload the information.

Either way, let us know which works and the "hardware ID" that it displays at the bottom, as well as the methods that it lists.

If it does require the "Unsafe DirectIO" setting, then you'll want to do this:

http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_Scanner_Advanced_Settings

Find the "DirectIo" section, check the 'Unsafe' option, click OK, and reboot the system.

I think the problem is already resolved in your beta, I got my laptop with esata and hooked it up then download beta version of scanner and it worked fine along with USB as well for reading smart status.

I suspect my other system is in need of a clean install to clear out some bugs in the USB unless it's an issue specific to a USB3 controller (they are Fresco Logic brand), I will be doing a clean install of Windows 10 on that PC when it comes out so if the problem ever rears it's head again I will report back.

Thanks for the help.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I got the same issue.

I tried "DirectIo Test" and it can read the SMART attributes using "Unsafe" or"USB", I was able to check the "DirectIO: Unsafe" checkbox on the Advance Settings window (Scanner 2.5.1.3062 - Latest Stable), I restarted the server and still cannot read the SMART attributes.

This is the drive info - screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/e7Q31Ab1B5d

Controller ID: USB\VID_0BC2&PID_AB31&REV_0342,USB\VID_0BC2&PID_AB31

Ideas?

Thank you.

What version of StableBit Scanner are you using specifically?

Ah, okay.

Could you upgrade to the public beta build?

There are some fixes for how we handle some drives, and this may fix your issue without using the Unsafe Direct IO setting.

Thank you... unfortunately, still does not work.

The version I installed was: 2.5.2.3100.BETA

I tried UNSAFE and regular... did not work.... but the DirectTest still works on USB and UNSAFE.

Ideas?

Thank you!
