    QNAP Hardware?

Hello - I have been using WHS2011 and Stable Bit Drive Pool on a HP Proliant N54L for several years. I have been happy with it, and don't really want to change, however it is 2020 now and as i understand it, support for WHS2011 ended in 2016... So, I got my hands on a QNAP TVS-671 (Intel Core i5 based) NAS and was wondering if there is any way to still use Windows/Stable Bit Drive Pool with this hardware? The NAS does support VM's, but it has to be set up in some way (either JBOD or RAiD) before I can create/use VM's, so I don't a VM running Windows/Drive pool would work.. Would it? Or even there's a way to run Windows/Stable Bit Drive Pool on a separate physical machine, and then use the NAS as a 6 bay enclosure connected by a single cable, with Drive Pool providing the fault tolerance, etc, I would be interested in that..Or any other suggestions for a way that I could use this QNAP NAS hardware with Windows/Stable Bit Drive Pool... Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!!
  2. Hi team, I have just had another let down with my WHS 2011 HP Proliant home server and am over it. I of course run DrivePool on the box but now that the OS SSD is failing to boot I want to know if I can install Windows 10 Pro as the OS and then recover all of my drive pool data? My plan would be to disconnect all of the data pool HDD (x 4), install Windows 10 Pro to the OS SSD and then install Drive Pool (assuming that the version for WHS that I purchased will also allow me to use it on Win 10) and then hopefully reconnect all of my data HDDs, reboot and watch the magic happen as DP rebuilds my stuff....Am I dreaming? Has anyone migrated their OS to Win 10 and used DP to reassemble and retain their data pool? I also plan to use VEEAM Endpoint Backup to cover my client computer backup tasks - if you have feedback for that I would value it. TIA for your input, cheers
  3. Hello everyone! With the reliability and density of today's spinning drives getting better all the time, and since I am now using DrivePool 2.x (works with any version of Windows), I've been thinking about leaving WHS2011, especially now that MS has ended support for it. I recently purchased a much more modern Supermicro motherboard than my current X7SBE that can use the more modern i3, i5 and i7 CPU's and up to 32GB DDR3 RAM. When I install this board, I am planning to finally ditch the 2 PCI-X, 8-Port SATA cards in favor of the newer PCIe cards in conjunction with 1 or more port expanders. I am sure this has probably been discussed here ad‑nauseam, but everyone’s situation is relatively unique, so I will forge ahead, fishing for ideas, comments, tips, tricks or whatever you think I need to know. The only super relevant post I could see in a quick search was a very short post by RacerX back in March. I’m going to need a little more hand-holding than he does to get this done. When I purchased the newer motherboard, I had originally intended to just upgrade the hardware, downsize a bit and continue with WHS2011. Now, I am thinking that might not be the best decision. I was planning to construct a secondary server alongside the WHS2011 box anyway, and move the drives over after I get the new server running stable. This would include reinstalling the Server OS. So why not just install a better OS instead? Shouldn’t be that much more effort, right? At least that is what I am thinking. This is where I need some coaching. So along those lines, I have a few questions/issues I hope some of you might be kind enough to help me with: 1. Firstly, is anyone here still using WHS2011, and if so how much longer are you planning to stick with it? How are you handling the security issues by using an OS that has not been updated in over a year now? Are you concerned? If not, why? 2. I have read that Windows Server Essentials is what I should consider. Which version would be best for me? I am still planning to run several pieces of hardware that might not be Windows 10 compatible, an OS I am not a fan of at all! Also, there is PRICE. I don’t think the budget will handle a $600 or $700 OS acquisition cost. I think 2012 is quite a bit cheaper than 2016, but I am not 100% certain about that. I’m thinking Server 2012 would probably be the best choice, but what do you guys think? 3. What major features would I be giving up that I had in WHS2011, and what would I be gaining by going to WS Essentials? Does Essentials have a Dashboard like in WHS2011? 4. Most Important: How does DrivePool and Scanner interface with Essentials? Is it similar to WHS2011 or will they BOTH run as standalone products ONLY? Thanks everyone! Really appreciate your input. I’m sure I will probably have more questions as I get further into this, but this is what is on my mind right now. GDog
  4. I've almost finished virtualising my home infrastructure, with everything running on a backbone of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacentre. This seemed like such a good idea (and it was!) until the premature arrival of my new Son. Now its going rather slowly...! The last device remaining outside of this is my WHS2011. I have P2V'd my WHS2011 and am preparing to make that transition after some testing this weekend. I'm just wondering though if I might take this opportunity to move to Server 2012 R2 (Essentials or otherwise), especially given the EoL of WHS (though I understand we will continue to receive security updates), I've read a lot about this and will probably opt to test Server 2012 R2 first before moving the box over. A lot of thoughts seem to be along the lines of using Server 2012 if you have access to it? I guess I just want a bit of advice on how to setup the drivepool in a virtual environment. I understand that for SMART I'm going to have to buy two copies and run it as in this thread, but what is the best way to set up the disks for the drivepool? Bearing in mind when moving the live system I won't want to be formatting any disks. Should I set up the drivepool on the physical system (Datacentre) and monitor these drives from within WHS2011 (or WHS2012)? Or does Drivepool work better if I pass through the disks (ignoring why this is becoming a deprecated technology for a moment) and run them exclusively inside the VM? From an infrastructure point of view, I don't really care where I run the Drivepool, other than having a preference for it to not be on the physical host directly, but if this is better all round, than I'll do that. Also, I don't yet have an additional network card as I just haven't gotten round to getting this setup whilst I've been testing things. I will ultimately have two seperate physical network interfaces, is it best for performance and reliability to dedicate one to the Drivepool machine? And on the subject of networking I'd ideally like to go down the route of teaming but with dns round robin. Any issues with Drivepool and that? Or is there a better networking solution?
  5. Okay, so my dashboard had gotten so that I could not open it at all. On a whim, I decided to uninstall SBDP version 1.3.7585, but had to do so through Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs because of the borked Dashboard. It uninstalled, and so I uninstalled the Dashboard Fix as well. Not thinking about it, I got the SBDP 2.x installer and ran it. Yay, SBDP is working and so is my Dashboard! But there's a hitch... The Add-Ins tab on Dashboard shows version 1.3.x is installed. What do I need to do to fix it? Or, should I even worry about it? It seems to be working fine, so I don't want to have to wipe and reinstall WHS2011. I did that once when the Dashboard wouldn't run, and after reinstalling SBDP 1.X I was back right where I started. Thanks in advance for your guidance. Jason
  6. Hope this is appropriate and someone can help me. I have 2 Pools consisting of 2x2TB HDDs, x2 duplication. One Pool is solely used for client backups, the other for most of the shares. Also, a Server Backup HDD and a seperate data HDD. Scanner is running as well. I would like these HDDs to spin down when not used for more then one minute (and is there a downside to this, i.e., is spinning up something that contributes to wear & tear of the HDD?). I have set this in the Power Options of Windows. Given that there is a myriad of settings in scanner that affects this, I am at a loss how to accomplish this and especially as I would preferably like to have Scanner read the SMART details (amongst which the temps I think). So how do you guys get this to work? The types of HDDs I have are: Seagate 2TB NAS (ST2000VN000) Seagate 2TB Desktop (ST2000DM001) Seagate 8TB Archive WD 4TB NAS (WD40EFRX) HGST 700GB (HTS541075A9E680, 2.5") What I have done now, for all HDDs in Scanner is: - Disk Settings: All options are OFF (incl. Query power mode directly from disk) - Disk Control: Disabled Advanced Power Management and Standby Timer (although the latter will not remain blacnk and show a fat dash when I open Disk Control again...) - Scanner Settings -> SMART: Throttle queries not more than 5 minutes As far as I can tell, all HDDs go to stand-by but are woken again after 5 minutes (I guess due to reading SMART). Can this be improved upon? Kind rgds, Umf
  7. I migrated my pool to my new Lenovo TS440 Server from an HP MediaSmart Ex495. Everything went smoothly with no problems. Transferred my license for Drivepool and the pool was recognized right off the bat and has been running great for 3 weeks now. But, as shown on my screenshot of the WHS2011 Dashboard, my folder sizes are ZERO except for Client Computer backups. I have re-measured, re-indexed to my heart's content, but nothing seems to fix this. I have no other problems at all, running fine, but I always enjoyed having these Stats available. What else can I do to get this to work?
  8. Apologies for creating yet ANOTHER thread about a WHS2011 migration, and whilst I have read through the other threads, my questions are a little differernt so I thought I'd start fresh and see if I can get some simple straightforward answers to my thoughts. Basically I currenty have a 20 disk server build in a Norco case. All works perfectly, is bullet proof and I'm very happy with it. But I have been given a new 24 bay case with newer internals, ie motherboard, processor, ram and Sata card, and knowing that the newer machine runs cooler and quieter, it makes sense to make a move over to this machiine and move the old case/server on. Looking through the FAQs, just migrating seems to be pretty straightforward. Once the new system is built and up and running, I just install Stablebit, and then place all of the drives into the new machine, Drivepool should automatiucally pick up and see the pool being imported as such and create that new pool for me automatically. This all sounds great and hopefully that part will be smooth running. It is at this point that I have a query. As said above, Im moving from a 20 disk to a 24 disk array all being controlled by an ARC1280ML card which seems to have been running well up till now....my current array, whilst being run off of a motherboard and 2 Supermicro cards was using drive letters E through to X which covers the 20 drives. When I initally built this server 5 years ago, this seemed like the sensible thing to do and I didnt think or comprehend that the drives wouldnt actually need indivdual drive letters. So my quesiton is this, knowing when I import the drivepool disks into the new machine that I wont have enough drive letters, as Ill be using a system/boot drive plus ill be attaching one of more USB drives at all times too, so potentially 27+, am I able to rename the drives as drive numbers and omit a drive letter or will this mean I lose anything off of the drives. Im sure this is a simple/stupid question but I wanted to check before I start tearing things apart. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a better or safer way? Hope this isnt too much of a tedious question but Im really hoping to make this as strightforward as possible
  9. I installed a new drive in my WHS 2011 box. As a result, my WHS Shares disappeared. The new drive hijacked the Drive Pool's Drive letter. Originally Drive Pool was the G drive, now it is the J drive. When I log onto the server and open win explorer, all of the files for the pooled shares are present. How do I fix the problem, and keep it from reoccurring? Should I name the Drive Pool drive deeper in the alphabet? Thanks for help.
  10. I have DrivePool installed on my WHS2011 box and it is running great. I have three 4TB hard disks in the pool. I understand that WHS2011 limits the server backup function from reading from partitions bigger than 2TB. My question is simply this: If I were to format each of my three disks into two equal (2TB) partitions, then create the pool from those partitions... would that be wise? My reasoning for doing this is that I could then use the Server Backup to backup the "poolparts" that I want to further protect to an external drive. My gut reaction is that this would not be the best solution. Would there be a risk that "duplicated" folders could end up on the same physical drive, but on separate partitions? Is there a performance hit for doing this... especially when it comes to balancing across partitions as well as the striping feature? The software may be smart enough to not have these issues but I don't know for sure. If anyone could help enlighten me on the topic I'd sure appreciate it. Also my apologies if this issue has already been addressed. I did search for it and came up empty. -Andy
  11. Most of my server folders disappeared after I added an internal drive to my server. Drive letters were reassigned upon restart. After pool reconnected with new drive letter, most folders (some standard, some I created) disappeared in the Dashboard and those showing showed zero size...but could still be reached from the client computers. In the dashboard I tried to re-create and browse to connect to the folders (as they were all still in the pool) but got the error that they already existed so couldn't be done! I tried to download the covecube utility from the wiki to fix, but couldn't save to a share. So instead of using a usb drive I created a new share to download to...and all the missing folders returned! Weird, but hopefully this will help someone else.
  12. Hello everyone. Had a little look through the forums and haven't really found a direct answer for my query so will try here instead. I currently have a rather large server consisting of 20 Drives in a XCase RM420. This currently comprises of 4 x 4TB (all connected directly to the satay ports on the mobo) and 16 x 2TB drives connected to two Supermicro SASLP-MV8 expansion cards (8 per card). All works perfectly via WHS 2011 and I use drive pool to give me one big disk and in honesty it all works perfectly. I upgraded the 4TB disks in last few months and all is/was good but of course as time goes on Im going to start running out of space again so I need to find a way to increase storage space and I don't really want to change cases or create an extra array in another case. So initial thoughts are that it would be good to replace some of the existing 2TB drives but this is where the problem lies. The SASLP-MV8 cards don't seem to support anything larger than a 2TB drive (there seem to be lots of contradicting posts all over the forums elsewhere stating they do with different firmware or they don't no matter what you do...either way I wont to be able to change things as simply as possible and the simple way looks to upgrade my expansion cards. From what I have read, the best ones to go for are the IBM M1015 cards as trey do exactly what is needed....as above, I don't need any raid functionality, so the JBOD functionality is perfect for what I need...bt herein lies the point that I need some assistance from the techies here. As stated above, my system is pretty big and pretty full and if I want to replace the cards (which is simple to do) I;m worried about what will happen to my existing drive pool. If I remove the existing cards or card if I change just one at a time, will be able to just plug in the cards and the drive pool be recognised, or is it not as simple as that. I really don't want to have to migrate all of the data OFF of the drives first as you can imagine having to remove 8 full 2TB drives from a drive pool is going to take a lot of time and effort as there is nowhere else in the drive pool for all of that data to go. Whes the only way is the hardest way)If anyone is able to help with these queries Id be eternally grateful Whilst I am doing this it makes sense for me to upgrade to the latest version of drive pool as well...so am I able to do this with the system in tact or does everything have to be started from scratch...if it is a fresh build then id probably just live with the version I'm currently running Whatever happens, are some point in the relative near future this will HAVE to be done, so I might as well start looking at my options....fingers crossed its the one with less work and effort (but of course sods law dictates the only way is the hardest way)If anyone is able to help with these queries Id be eternally grateful
  13. Hello, First off I want to say thanks to this great community for any help that can be given. I've been using Drive pool since the early beta period and have never had any issues until now. I have a WHS2011 with 7 hard drives. My single 250 OS drive was starting to fail, so I made a 2 x 500gb mirrored RAID 1 array, and cloned the OS over to it, and removed the original 250gb failing disk. WHS booted up and everything seemed just fine until I tried to access a server folder from another computer and got a "This device is not ready" error. When I went on the server to investigate, the backup folder was missing so I allowed WHS to recreate it. The drives are still in the pool, however it looks like all the folders are not included in the pool any longer. It also looks like the pool may have been corrupted, because the free space is shown as unknown. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened, as well as what the best way to fix this might be? Is there something I'm overlooking that I missed as a step? I've attached screen shots of all the pages of Drive Pool. Let me know if any other information might be needed. Thank you in advance! Chris
  14. My new WHS 2011 system worked for a week or so then the Dashboard's Users and Add-ins tabs went empty. I'm using Stablebit's Drivepool. Drivepool is exactly what I needed to make WHS 2011 work the way I wanted it to (i.e. like WHS V1). I'm 99.9999% sure that Drivepool hasn't caused the problem. The reason I'm submitting this post here is because I couldn't find an answer to my problem on Google, several MS forums, some server forums, and more... The one person I found that had similar symptoms used an external HDD that caused the problem. I'm different in that the system doesn't have any external HDDs, only internal HDDs *NOT* in RAID. The only change I know of between the time WHS worked and not are the typical weekly MS updates. I hope that a WHS 2011 expert will be able to identify the problem and suggest a cure. I don't want to reinstall WHS 2011 with a potential risk to data if there is an easier, safer fix. Symptoms: Dashboard Users tab empty with a note saying "This list contains no items." The list formerly had several users. Dashboard Computers and Backup tab says backed computers are offline, but they really are online. Curiously, backups are still being performed. Dashboard Add-ins tab empty with a note saying "No add-ins are installed". However, Stablebit Drivepool is installed and working. Dashboard Drivepool tab working normally I get an error message when I try to install StableBit's Scanner Client computers can't sign into Dashboard or Launchpad I uninstalled the WHS client software on one computer and I can't properly reinstall it as I get a warning message from the connector app. The necessary services appear to be running No relevant WHS event errors in event viewer. As an aside, I've got some annoying errors. One is about printers on the network that I didn't bother with WHS-wise (duh!) the other error is about the lack of a CD drive that I temporarily used to install WHS. I removed the CD/DVD drive after WHS was installed since I'm using it in another system. Otherwise, WHS appears to be working normally I have to fix the problem since I can't backup one system, I can't add more systems, I can't add more users, and I can't add StableBit's Scanner addin.
