Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from Techtonic in Wrong smart info for Microsoft Storage Space
Well, the surface scans still work, at least.
The big issue here is how to display both the "logical" disks displayed (the storage space), and the individual disks, as well.
And that's even considering if all the same information about the disks is provided. So this is a complicated request.

Hi,
Well i have been busy tinkering updated from my highpoint 2072 to LSI 9207 4i4e for no particular reason other than i got it at a steal of a price. I also got rid of my 2x studio 4u case's and custom built my own out of old cases I had spare also installed silent fans in all my hardware so well its silent and very cool drive temps are a steady 28C to 30C under load I updated my main Spec build here so show all the changes.

The 2TB volume limit in WHS2011 you refer to does not apply here. You can use 8TB HDDs and have them in the Pool without any issue.
Ever checked Event Viewer for suspect messages? Tried replacing the SATA cable? How is it connected exactly?

no, no no.
You're overlooking the really important part here: SYMMETRICAL. that's 10Gb up and down!

Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from taflemer in Drivepool Remote Access
Well, I use a domain, instead of a workgroup, so all of my computers show up as "COMPUTER_NAME.LANDSRAAD.local" (landraad.local being the domain). So, this depends on the DNS server and/or master browser. So your router is definitely acting as a DNS server.
As for the router stuff, if it's not a combo modem/router, you could replace it (something like pfsense or sophos UTM may be a good idea).

Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from steffenmand in [Possible Bug] Label change on drive
Yup, seems kind of weird.
However, there are cases where this makes sense. For instance, if you have multiple volumes/partitions on the single disk. Changing the label doesn't make sense in this case.
However, if it's the only partition/volume, then it would make sense to update it.
I've included the suggestion.

Well, the "Computer_name.fios-router.local" shouldn't make a difference really. This is more of a display issue (though you can disable the dns suffixes in the IPv4 config).
Aside from that, yeah, it may be issues with the hardware.
As for he software, yeah, the service runs in the background, even when not logged in. All the UI does is connect to the service (even for remote control, as it's routed though the service, basically).

Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from taflemer in Drive Pool on WHS v1
Unfortunately, we don't support StableBit DrivePool on Windows Home Server v1, at all.
Specifically, there is no Windows XP or Server 2003 driver for the pool, so it just won't work (assuming that you can get it to install, as the installation should be outright blocked on the OS).

youre right, we have a lot of providers here with more popping up all the time. increases the bandwidth and prices for everyone. i think our government set a goal that everyone in te country must have access to 100 mbit by 2020.
When a future beta includes this change im gonna grab a nice screenshot to promote stablebit a bit, it is really awesome and A LOT more stable than all other options available.
hope it makes it in soon ;-)

The change of partial chunk size is all i wanted This will make it possible to utilize the speeds in download as well! The partial read is just great, but the 2mb chunk size just made it slow down the connection incredibly much!
Scandinavia has really good internet, especially as we got fiber connections coming up all over the country (Denmark here). Being a small country has its benefits as its cheaper to get the cables everywhere!
Stablebit truly shows its power here, and it works incredibly well! - as soon as the download can get its speeds up

Well, for the dashboard stuff ..... make sure all the WSE services are running on the service. Especially the "management" service. If it's not, see if the "Block level backup service" is running or not. If not .... try running "wbadmin delete catalog" on the server (from an admin command prompt), and then re-setup the server backup.
And to make a point here.. I have to do this every f****ing time I add a disk, as the M1015 card I have enumerates the disks before the built in Intel controller .... and it causes this issue.
It's annoying, frustrating, and because Microsoft "cannot reproduce it", I get ignored. Despite the fact that I can reproduce this issue AT WILL.
And very nice looking, overall.
And sorry to hear the SAS cables are ... basically too short. I have nice long cables, Too long, in fact. But better to be too long than too short.

It is possible, and we are aware of how to do so.
However, this is a significant change, and requires testing before it can even be released.
Additionally, Alex is busy finishing up StableBit CloudDrive, and once that's released, we do plan on going through StableBit DrivePool and StableBit Scanner, fixing bugs and going through feature requests (such as this).

OK, so it lives! My observations were:
Norco 4220: I was spoilt using Lian-Li cases in comparison to the 4220 which is much more "agricultural"
- The Norco Mini SAS cables are too short to reach all corners of the case. If they were 0.6m instead of 0.5m it would be ideal. I can just "stretch" them to fit between the M1115 ports and the back plane but the tension on a couple of these would keep the Goldern Gate Bridge up
- The cable holes in the Fan backplane are oddly positioned (offset) from backplane connectors. It's best to take out two of the fans to get them in and even then I keep disconnecting some of the Molex connectors trying to get the Fans back in.
- The PS connector has no quick snap slots (if fact nothing on this case is screw-less)
- Plenty of Room to work on the board and using SAS really keeps cable mgt easy.
- No Cut fingers
- No issue with the rail kit mounting and fitting to the rack (my 800mm depth rack is the bear minimum)
Other Stuff: Like all things, the physical swap does not take that long and off course it fired up just fine... but stuff did not work "right" out of the box:
- The Mini-SAS to 4 x Sata (Reverse Breakout) cables work! ... though it took me a bit to work out what drives were my OS, OS Backup and which SATA controller mapped to which Physical Drive bay.
- I could not get the 2nd M1115 card to be recognised in Windows Device Manager and it was taking ages to trouble shoot, so between boots I started googling for SAS Expanders (and cursing Chris). Anyway, after uselessly playing with settings, a BIOS Update fixed it.
- So the Top Row is driven by the Mobo, and the other 4 Rows from the 2 x M1115. I also still have 4 x spare sata ports for other uses if needed.
- A nice solid 110MBs (GB sized files) / 70MBs (MB sized files) connection between my two PC Pools, which is pretty good. Looking forward to seeing how it goes once MS/Intel fix the teaming issue on Win10.
I've got it all in the rack and doing a DrivePool conversion (from Drivebender). I need a few bits for the rack then I'll post a pic of it mounted.
Thanks
Nathan

Do this:

Set the "BitLocker_PoolPartUnlockDetect" setting to "False" and restart the service.

Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from taflemer in Drivepool Remote Access
To be blunt here:
This is something that you may need to talk to Verizon about (or whomever makes the router in question), as this is a hardware/firmware related issue on the router, and most likely the wireless stuff.
We do allow you to change the multicast settings for the software:
http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_2.x_Advanced_Settings
But I don't think this will really help out here, as I believe that we are using the multicast API for .NET Framework.
Aside from contacting Verizon, or installing your own wireless AP, the best solution for you is the RemoteControl.xml file.
However, you could create a single copy, with all the systems in the network, and place this on each system. That should definitely fix the issue.

Could you get the log from the drive, when this is happening, so we can take a look at what is going on specifically?
And we would rather optimize the performance for everyone. Especially as larger chunks will cause more of a wait/load time when accessing non-cached information.
But either way, I've flagged the issue/request for Alex.
https://stablebit.com/Admin/IssueAnalysis/23906
But also, what OS is this, what version of StableBit DrivePool are you using?
And could you post the results of this: http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Q2159701

Christopher (Drashna) got a reaction from CosmicPuppy in Access Denied
I've created an Issue/Bug for this, and specifically requested that we add an advanced option to allow the pool to remain online/writable when a disk is missing.
https://stablebit.com/Admin/IssueAnalysis/23902
However, if this was implemented, we would absolutely require a complete recheck of the pool every time a disk goes missing. For a large pool, this can take a quite large amount of time.
I don't think this request is unreasonable at all, and for people that want this functionality, I feel that it would be definitely nice to have.
In the meanwhile, storage spaces absolutely does support this (at least documented as such, and developed as such) right now.
As for a pro/con chart, no we don't have one, but the main differences is that Storage Spaces is a block based solution (like dynamic disks and RAID), as opposed to a file based solution.
Additionally, there are very few recovery software solutions that can read and recover data from a damaged/degraded/malfunctioning array. Whereas, because StableBit DrivePool is a file based solution, you can extract the data from even a single disk. And pretty all recovery software can read NTFS.
Another difference is that with ReFS and a mirrored (and I believe parity) array, Storage Spaces can detect and correct corrupted files on the fly. However, there is a performance impact with using ReFS (as it calculates checksums as data is being written, and reads from them), and there is a significant performance impact for parity arrays. In both cases, the systems' CPU must do the heavy lifting, and this can/does adversely affect performance.

Christopher (Drashna) reacted to jmone in Refs and storage spaces
I think we are mixing terms of what bit does what,
- ReFS : Just a better disk format in terms of reliability in writing and managing files than NTFS.
- ReFS and Storage Spaces : Give the ability to pool disks as Simple, Mirror, or Parity Storage Spaces. Mirror or Parity offers background scrubbing and error correction. Parity Storage Spaces is described by MS for "where you want to maximise capacity and you're OK with lower write performance"
For me DP on ReFS is the better soln as, I just want a "Simple" pool (as I backup to another pool), and
- While I'd like the background scrubbing and error correction, I'm not willing to lose 50% of my HDD space if using SS Mirror or the performance hit if using SS Parity on my main pool but I would consider using SS Parity on my Server 2012R2 Backup Pool.
- DP offers much finer level of control regarding how pools work than SS.
- I look forward to "official" ReFS support in Drive Pool before I'd recommend the combination generally.
Thanks

System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (0x80004005): A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host Looks like this is an issue with the remote control functionality, and that it's having issues connecting (or attempting to connect) to systems.
This error specifically is a harmless issue, and you should be fine to ignore it.

Christopher (Drashna) reacted to maxiimus in Drivepool + encryption
Hi everyone,
I have now used diskcryptor for a couple of days and it seems to work flawlessly. I did what Christopher said in #2 and I have also encrypted my system drive for most transparency. I have to enter my password at boot but after that, I don't get any indications or notifications that the whole system is encrypted which is really nice.
Thanks for the replies in here .
BTW: I didn't try Bitlocker as I thought I would try diskcryptor first

Well, I'm glad to hear that it's working great for you now!
As for the destroyed drive, it may be that the delete is pending on Google's size.

Christopher (Drashna) reacted to lee1978 in Refs and storage spaces
Hi Nathan
Thanks that's good to hear I am going to start re formatting my spare drives and start the migration.
I think i just got mindset by the lot of negative comments you read on the net on both storagespaces and ReFS, but I should have known better tbh I have 16 wd greens in my pool and some are now reaching the 5 year mark with no problems at all but people say don't touch them with a barge pole I think it's all down to individual usage and like you say the demonstration I had yesterday showed it just works and works very well.
I think I will set up another identical pool using storage spaces which I will use for backup and do a lot of testing in either case should the worst happen to either drivepool or storagespaces i would then just be able to redirect to either one I shall keep you informed.
Thx
Lee
