One point Win 10 Home does not have Remote desktop - so if you use that - either find something else (vnc etc) or get win 10 pro

There are lots of youtube videos on how to put things together - so wont go through that
but a few key points to consider
decide on a budget as its easy to get carried away with all the shiny new tech available
decide on what the key things are you want to do with the pc/NAS - just a file server -> media server and beyond - as this will significantly affect what level of kit you will need.
decide on intel or AMD for motherboard/cpu - look for motherboards with a couple of built in network ports as this will give you flexibility - a 4th to 6th generation i5/i7 intel cpu will give you plenty of power and future proof to a degree unless you want to pay a premium for 7th gen or possibly look at AMD ryren although its still a bit new and as you are not experienced some of the quirks are still to be worked out.
to keep costs down - look for end of line sale items - most resellers have clear outs periodically where you can pick up high quality kit for much reduced prices
get a good case with expansion potential worth paying a premium for a good roomy case with lots of options - your data volume always grows so having the option to add more HDD easily is always welcome.
get a good quality power supply - higher rated than you think you need - to keep it cool/efficient and the better ones come with more power leads
if its only going to be a file server you dont need a separate GPU card (Nvidia/AMD) as the more recent CPU's have a built in GPU which will be fine - obviously make sure the m/b has HDMI/Displayport ports - if you do want a separate GPU then thats fine as the internal one gets disabled in the bios.
Another option is to look for a PC thats already built that gives you the components and space you need might be a bit more expensive but easier to get you going

A NAS is usually a linux based low power machine (qnap and Synology) however if you build a basic pc with a case capable of holding the disks you need - then effectively you have a NAS that can be accessed across your network by any device you want to use to access the data.
So if you can build a pc with windows load DP/Scanner and fill it with enough HDD/SSD then you have your NAS
NAS = Network Attached Storage ~ Its a file server - so its a PC - so you can buy the bits and build it yourself ~ fancy mechano - and you can upgrade/change the spec at will as needed which you cant do with a purpose built NAS from QNAP of Synology
I had three QNAP NAS before i went to DP as its much easier to work with and if a disk dies it's not as significant as one failing in a RAID. I still use one QNAP 8 bay nas to hold my Movies/TV files as it can be on 24/7 with low power - but its no good for transcoding etc as it does not have the power to do this - but serving up files to my tv etc no problem as this is its primary design purpose.

Question - unless the NAS is Windows based, which is rare, you do realise you cant use DP with a NAS?
If you want a pc and DP with lots of drives then - build your own is the best bet - and use the seagates in the pc (take out of enclosures)
If you want a NAS anyway then QNAP or Synology are your best options - but they cost more than a build your own pc - and you are very likely to have better performance - and use NAS grade disks if you go raid not desktop disks as they will bite.

do not let the pool balance - in fact disable the service
do you not have the recycle bin enabled?
if not then - look for a undelete program via google that works with ntfs
point it at your pool part folders for each drive and see if you can recover etc

i have seen 1. occasionally as well when writing to the pool - i have ssd's as the cache so would not expect any slowdown
It does not happen that often but is noticeable when it does - its not directly reproducible for me

one lic per PC so you will need two for each program for two pc with Dp and Scanner

Assuming the c: drive is not part of the pool then you have little to worry about
re installing win 7 will only install on the c: drive - you are in control of that anyway - or just disconnect the power leads to the pool drives while you do the install
then reinstall DP/Scanner etc and the pool will be recognised by default
If the drives come back with different letters just change them in disk management before you install any other software
As for the backup - look at something like syncbackpro - there is a free version as well
RDP will be fine

Yes 426 is large but depends on how you have some of your os features setup
that duplicated could be "metadata" that gets duplicated by default - not 100% on that - try a remeasure of the pool it might "fix" some of the other and duplicated
nothing to worry about with the beta's they work fine

it will be the master file table and System volume information etc and will grow as you add more files (slowly) - most if not all is in hidden system files so not immediately visible
nothing to worry about its normal - i have about 20GB combined of Other on my pools (115TB) - but - i have limited my restore point sizes which reduces the SVI etc a lot
if you put your mouse over each drive it will show you how much each drive has of "other"
I think there is a wiki or pinned thread on it although i cant find it at the moment

Ps i would upgrade to the latest beta (lots of fixes you are missing with 2.1.x) - beta's are stable and i have only used them

I have today installed Symantec Endpoint Protection (V14.0) and it has picked up drivepool.notifications.exe as a potential virus
as you can see it's a different "risk" to the original OP

when it gets to 0% it will usually become read only

To remove the drive letters go to computer management>disk management and right click on each drive in turn and choose - "change drive letter and path"
either remove the letter or mount to a folder ( so you can access them easily later - directly)
As for when the balance happens thats up to you and how drives get filled up - check out the balancing options and plugins etc

Not seen the pools re order at boot - its only because i had other issues that i re set the instal and hence they are in a different order
So is there any way to get them into a different order?

Just click remove and dont check any of the options
it will take several hours depending on the amount of data on the disk being removed
done this several times with no issue when splitting my pool into two

Are you checking all your disks prior to boot or just the ones with errors you know about?

Fast ring are IIRC something like nightly builds of the latest updates for win 10
Any errors details available?

VMWare remote console why are you using that?
Is DP in a VM?
When you run Check disk you have DP service stopped ?
You have checked for a virus?
What else is running on the server besides Scanner and DP - anything data intensive?

Red pro are noisy and run hot although a good drive - but expensive for what you get if you are not going to use them in a NAS
i have HGST (4tb) drives and they are fast at 170 + MB/s when lightly filled when full they drop down to ~ 120 MB/s with large files
SSD's obviously significantly faster
Have you thought of Raid 0 for stream - as long as you have a good backup strategy to protect your data - then cheaper/smaller SSD's could be used as a failure will take out the whole raid as 0 has no redundancy
