I was thinking Server 2008/2008R2 and Win 7 was going end of support Jan 2019, but seems we are actually good through Jan 2020. But I'm still not happy with the direction of MS and Serer Essentials. All this means I have more time to figure out what's next in my Home Server build.
Still nice get input from others.
Now if only Silcon Dust would actually release their 6 tuner HD Homerun prime.

Are you using your own domain? homerserver.com (MS domain service) cert expired in Sept , was a 5 year cert, I haven't had time to look in to too much. But I should Say RDP is dead, could be unrelated to the domain cert, i'm not that smart ha, RWA still works, but since the domain cert has expired, I have all sorts of warnings.

Hi, looking for some guidance, I had planned to upgrade my WHS2011 server next year with Essentials 2019, and just read they dropped client backups and the remote web access. At this point, I'm not sure I have a use for the product anymore. I can still get essentials 2016 at the moment, but knowing that there will not be a windows upgrade path after that, i'm thinking for $350 for the OS, are there better options to consider. What's the direction everyone else is going, I might add, that I will be getting the HDHR 6 turner prime, if they ever release it to replace my ceton 6Turner ETH. I'm now looking at windows 10 pro as my server OS, or even qnap/synology NAS, but I'm still scared of the linux drive formatting, I like Windows/Drivepool, because I can always get my data after a hardware failure - I do have backups on a 2nd WHS 2011 server and offline backups, of the importance stuff.
Only reason I'm still running WHS2011 is because of media center and the archive plugin, that is it just works.
also, my remote web access with my homeserver.com domain is now dead, as the cert expired, so MS once again, is killing products that would make it a powerhouse with consumers, RIP Zoom, WHS, MCE.

I've got a couple of worrisome Seagate 4TB Expansion drives with high (>300,000) LCC's, and I'm a bit confused that one (ST4000DM001) is shown as OK under SMART with an LCC of 444,543 and the other (ST4000DM001) has a warning with an LCC of 300,794. I see that SMART is using "non-manufacturer specific" interpretation rules for the first (higher LCC but no warning) and "Seagate Desktop HDD.15" for the second (lower LCC but with warning). I'm just wondering why the different interpretation rules, and whether LCC > 300,000 is OK for the ST4000DM001?

I've have some laptop grade Hitachi drives, knowing in advance that they had the same problem as the WD greens, going to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity, and with scanner pinging your drives for smart data (you can change the freqency in the settings), LCC would run up on the drives, this tool, rights a small file every few second and keeps them spinning. After 3 years and 190 days on one drive, and 3 years 250 days on the other drive, they drives are still going strong, the drive letter was changed for one of the drives, something I did and forgot to update the tool, and the LCC is over 500K on that one, but 5347 on the other one.

That's the fun part... I've had a tube in my side since mid September to reduce the number of stones (or at least their impact).
Last week (Wednesday, the 15th), I did go in and had the thing cut out. I'm recouping from surgery (out patient), it just .... hurts and is very uncomfortable. And apparently, they removed ~50 stones along with the gallbladder ....
Worse yet, is that I'm apparently insensitive to opioids in generally. They have to give me "the really good stuff" to get any real effect... and that is mostly to take the edge off. I don't get loopy, ... I could drive a car safely, etc. It really sucks.
And if you're wondering, yes, it's been why I've been slow to answer inquiries on the forum.
The moral is that if you're feeling any pain in your abdominal area... on the right side specifically and right beneath the ribcage ... it's probably gall bladder related. And get it taken out as soon as possible... (I'm not a doctor, so consult one FIRST)

Really OT but I know some here used to visit there as well. Has Terry Walsh ditched the forums he had on wegotserved? If so, what is a good alternative?
I just noticed this as well. Hum, hate to see it go, WGS was like my first my first experience into the world of home servers, it's like a part of me has gone missing. I don't frequent the forms as much as I use too, not doing anything new to my setup, and my WHS2011 server keeps chugging away with DP and scanner, MCE, ceton ETH, etc, etc. I've been going strong since 2009(WHS V1) because of WGS, Stablebit, Homeservershow, AVSforum, The green button, and many others that no longer exist.
But I must say that I 'm looking forward to file vault this was one of my suggestions many years ago, 2013 if I recall. You guys can all thank me when it's finally released.

Will DP run on Windows® Storage Server 2012 R2? I didn't see is listed as a compatible OS, but figured I'd ask anyway since WSS is only available from OEM's.
I have a customer that might be interested.

Use Keepalive HD, as it not the drive, but the controller in the enclosure that's turning the drive off, and I'm assuming Scanner is waking it up to get the SMART statics's Over and over again. the worst part of USB drives, the crummy controller, what's really funky, you may see a 5tb partition now, but if you ever pull the drive from the enclosure, and connect directly to your PC via a sata cable, you will see multiple partitions.

Small correction, while I still believe the controller is the primary problem, I have a few newer seagate desktop grade drives, 4TB's and 1 6TB, and the load cycle counts on these are higher than they should be. IE. my newest drive 6tb ST6000nm0024, which was a retail drive, after 52 days, the loadcycle counts are at 2540, but at that rate, I won't hit 300000 cycles for many years, but I have a Desktop grade Hitach cool spin, and the load cycle count is only 3124 after 2.5 years.

At some point Microsoft will stop updates on WHS 2011. Although I still get updates for WHS V1. Looking forward, I don’t feel rushed, but there are some issues coming. Window 8.1 does not play nice with the connector for one. I also need to figure out streaming for Win 8.1. I am kicking around next steps, WIn 7, WIn 8.1, WIn 10 and MS Onedrive. The new Raspberry Pi 2.0 is slated for a Win 10 install. There are some interesting options to look at.
The Covecube products look like an essential part of any solution. I know the Covecube products work with many versions of Windows and the answer to my question is hiding in plain sight. I have not be able to find minimum system requirements for Stablebit and Stable Scanner. IE: RAM, CPU speed….et al. Hope somebody can point the guy in the slow lane to the right place.
You should get Security Updates on V1 for a few more months, it's based on server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 support is ending July 14, 2015. You should be good on Security updates through January 2020 on WHS 2011, it's based on Server 2008. As far as minimum requirements, most of folks started running it on WHS 2011 on an HP Micro Server N36l, AMD Athlon II NEO N36L 1.3 GHz, this was dual core proc, passmark of 809, it came stock with 2GB's ram, but most upgraded to 4GB min, I'm still running DP and Scaner on a HP Micorserver N40l, system performance is slow when you RDP, but overall it's still a capable file server.
this made me laugh, a Intel Xeon Processor 3.0 GHz processor from the DL380 G4, has a pass mark of 398, much lower than I expected, the 3.6 has a passmark of 500. makes the micro server look like a beast.
As far as confirmed minimal requirements, I'll leave that for some one else.
Edit, added "security updates", which is the most important for any server touching the internet.

Well, once StableBit CloudDrive has been released, Alex should be able to devote much more time to working on StableBit FileSafe and other projects.
Hopefully, both will be soon.

I believe HD tune has a cost, never used it, the manufacture often has free tools that you can use, but I usually perform full format which takes several hours, especially on a 4tb HDD, then I let stablebit scanner perform a full scan, which is several more hours, and let the drive run for a week or so in the server before adding to the pool. most of my drives have been pulled from external enclosures, as a matter of fact all of my 3.5" drives excluding 1 HGST NAS Drive have been pulled from enclosures, With that said, I will typically run the full format and stable scanner before busting open the enclosure, and then repeat the process again when added internally to the server.
Nothing too crazy.

Unfortunately, no we can't really give you any more information about this product at this time.
Right now, developement hasn't really started on it at all. Alex is busy working on StableBit CloudDrive (and we are very close to getting that released). Once we are done with that, then we will focus on our other projects, like this one.
I've been waiting patiently for Filesafe. If anything happens to my family photos, I'm afraid of what my wife may do to me. But I'm sure you guys will hear about it in the news. -

no not from the dashboard, remote in to the server using the "remote desktop connection" from a PC on your network, or not on your network if you can, and from the server's desktop, go to start menu, administrative tools. server backup, and on the right pane, click backup schedule, you'll find more options here than under the backup wizard in the WHS 2011 dashboard.

will it be safe to use the Kingston ssd with the win 10 tech preview? my worry is that soon as I load windows there is an update download to go to the next build.. will this hurt the ssd ?

That depends on how many licenses you've purchased. A single personal license can be activated on any computer for an unlimited time.
There use to be a discount of $10, most folks used it to buy stable bit scanner or DP, after buying the other, I'm don't see why you could not user it to buy two copies of DP. Wait for Christopher to respond to clarify the discounting, as it may have changed, or I could be wrong with my assumption.

How much slower are the wd black 2.5 inch with 16mb cache over the 3.5 black ive had for 5 years?
im debating between spinner and ssd.....
unless u guys think the crucial will be durable enough to go for at least 5 yrs or so
I'd be careful going with any of the current 2.5" drives geared for laptops, excluding the 2.5 WD red, many if not all of them have head parking issues which plays into the systems time out/sleep features and saves battery life for laptops. I was going to go with a 2.5" black, but I found mixed reviews, some complained about the head parking, while others did not, so I went with a SSD. The issue with the head parking is that drives have so many load cycle counts before the drive starts throwing smart errors when you hit the max. I have a couple 2.5 HGST drives, that i use a program to write data to them every 8 seconds which keeps the heads from parking.
there's no reason to go mechanical at this point for the OS drive, SSD's are too cheap. Use the built in windows utility to back UP the os drive, and forget about.

speed was great with black as os drive but wanted a 2.5 inch os drive so ill have more room for the 6 tb monsters
if I go with either a black or ssd can I use red in pc for data pool ? or will it b sluggish ?
Red in the pool is just fine, I just think as an OS drive, there's a lot going on, with reads/writes, page files, what ever, but when use as a pooled drive, the activity is limited, I have the same 2.5" red in my pool, I also have a couple of the older 1TB WD Blues which are 5200RPM I believe, you can tell the speed difference with file transfers are hitting the blues, as these drives also have other limiting factors like 8mb cache, etc. Here's interesting article reviewing the latest NAS drives, http://www.anandtech.com/show/8265/wd-red-pro-review-4-tb-drives-for-nas-systems-benchmarked/4. take the results with a grain of salt. the HGST's were not tested but it's mostly likely because they are the newest NAS drives on the market. Good information none the less.
(assuming you live in the US) Oh, it's the holiday shopping season, go get yourself an SSD, 240GB's are running $50 and up. I've even seen the older intel 530 240gb, which is what i'm using for an OS drive in my WHS 2011, for $70ish.

hey drashna have you ever used the wd red 1TB 2.5 inch drive as a single os drive? seems really slow compared to my 3.5 inch wd black. if im transferring files to it it almost freezes the os while doing file transfer. and now WD told me not to use reds in my pc wich would suck cause I really want that 6 TB monster..
im definitely considering an intel 730 ssd at 240gb but still want reds for the pool.
What do u think I should do?
yeah, I would not recommend any red drive as an OS drive, the slowish spindle speed will be noticed, go SSD or stay with the wd black 7.2k RPM, put the red in your storage pool.
I hear you on the 6tb, I've got my eye on the HGST 6TB NAS drive, I'm liking these as they are 7.2K vs all the other NAS drives which are in the 5k range. I will say, you do get more heat from the HGST. but that's the price you pay for speed.

In the past for all my desktop builds I've usually put ~$100 into the motherboard as I felt that was a good price point for good quality on a budget and I still think that I'd go with the ASRock H87WS-DL.
As for the G3220, I did some research and I did find that users could transcode one 1080p stream while still serving up a Subsonic stream to one user. While that seems limiting to some, for the foreseeable future that's all I need. I'm glad you brought it up and got my wheels turning because I was pretty tunnel vision on getting that CPU (It helps that the CPU will be free as I'm buying it with credits)
The good news is I'm not pressed for time as my current rig is still trucking. I'm already about a month or two into research and am enjoying learning about all the different hardware.
I'm still weary of the the proc. but you've clearly done your home work on your requirements, check back in in a few months, when you get your build complete, let us know how it goes.

quick update, to the remote web access domain issues, I guess after 5 years MS kills the .homserver.com domain. I went through the setup process to setup the domain as new domain through the WHS2011 dashboard, grabbed the same one as it was available, so all is good there. No more Waring and RDP works again remotely. as an FYI, I could still reach the WHS webpage using the expired domain, and browse the folders. only RDP from outside my network was affected.
Spent some time upgrading to a new 850Watt PSU, my 550 was maxed out at roughly 9 spinning drives and one PCI SATA M.2., the 10th, or any random drive would randomly drop off the pool and from the server after a day or two of up time, took some time to determine it was a PSU issue, but after replacing stata cables, and re-configuring the internal power connections, removing the 10th drives resolved the issue. Interesting, my new PSU didn't have any molex connectors, but I found a site called cablemods.com that will custom make what ever type of modular cable you need for a wide range of modular PSU's. takes about 2 weeks or more to get the cables. but so far so good.
Looks like this thread was derailed abit, but I still need a new solution. the search for continues.
