  1. Looks like I might have a couple of issues. The Media Server option can't be installed due to the fact I installed Windows Server 2012 Standard over WSE2012. Today I started getting the same error from live TV. The extenders connect to a Windows 7 machine, not the WSE machine. But I found Media Streaming is off, so I turned that on. So now I should have Live TV fixed, but I'm maybe hosed on the movie shares?

    SQL Server

I finally got around to doing this today. It is looking good. Thanks!
  3. I believe my wife thinks we are running a data center sometimes. I've made a lot of changes recently and everything is a mess, but I have it on my list of things to do to clean up the closet this weekend. When I do, I'll get some pictures and put them up.
  4. Absolutely. Discovering Direct to Disk was one of the major game changers for BI for me. Power is pretty cheap here, 11.4c per KW.
  5. I've been thinking hard about this one, but can't come up with a solution. After moving from WHS2011 to WSE2012, of course I've moved into domain rights. I have three XBOX 360s that are used solely for extender purposes. Before the move, everything was working great. After the move, the 360s can't play back media that is shared on the WSE2012 server. The master HTPC is on the domain, and can play back movies from the server. The XBOX can play back media that's on the HTPC, but when I try to play back media from the server, I get the typical "Application error". Any ideas? I can be more specific or post logs or something if necessary.
  6. I certainly did not mean to imply that this was a replacement for offsite backups, but one of the complaints I consistently hear about RAID5 is the fact that losing two drives means you lose your data - Drivepool gives you a way to duplicate in a manner that would mitigate this risk.
  7. For what it's worth, I run BI on the same "server" as the rest of my stuff. But, what I've done is set up ESXi, and BI is on a separate VM, and each of my VMs have a dedicated NIC. I've only given it two cores and 4GB of RAM, and works just fine at about 50% utilization under full load. Also, it stores to a separate pair of drives than the rest of my machines. This way, no matter what BI does, it never affects the rest of my system. This will keep you from needing to have a separate system just for BI. I'm sure it work just fine under HyperV if you wanted to go that way. My BI implementation utilizes 7 3MP cameras and two 1.2MP cameras. The 7 3MP are hardwired using PoE, the two 1.2's are wifi, all configured for direct to disk. All cameras come into a different switch on a different IP range, and as I said a separate dedicated NIC. The other VMs I have truly have no clue that the BI machine is even there. The same server is running WSE2012, so it backs up my workstations on the local LAN NIC, and it is also my IIS server for a few websites. I just checked power consumption on my server - 77 watts. 6 hard drives, Xeon E3-1246v3, Intel server motherboard, etc. I am using a Seasonic gold plus power supply, that may help a little bit.

    SQL Server

Hey, I'm getting a whole bunch of oplock request denied errors when trying to duplicate my sql server files. It appears to be causing the duplication to stop, pool organization bar is stuck in the middle. Can I not duplicate my SQL directory?
  9. This does work in Server Essentials. The only thing I had to do was change the drive letter to match what I was running before so that the applications I have running from the pool would work again. I think your idea of routing 8080 to 80 at the router will work. And yes, you can mess around (add) bindings to the default website in the IIS manager. I just don't know if either will allow you to complete registration. How about connecting to a Mifi or your phone as an access point to get the registration completed, then go back to your home network?
  10. Another advantage of Drivepool is that if you have a specific folder that you want extra protection for, like pictures, you can set it to duplicate across more than just two drives. So you could have three copies if you wanted.
  11. Hey Chris, there's a discussion over on AVS asking about how files are written to a pool. I have made some assumptions, but it may be better answered by you. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/1800209-2-tb-hdd-replacement.html I assume if a show is being recorded by WMC, it will be written to all drives in the pool, if so configured. Drivepool doesn't wait for the file to complete, then duplicate, does it? I've never cared, because I don't duplicate the Recorded TV folder.
  12. With DrivePool, I haven't had issues with the license, but I do recommend deactivating it first. I've moved it around and such without deactivating with no issues, but I can tell you with Scanner, you MUST deactivate the old one first, then put the new one in place. And if you are wondering, when I installed Drivepool on WSE 2012, it AUTOMATICALLY deactivated the WHS 2011 license. So no, you can't have one license on two machines. (No, I wasn't trying to get around it, in my case I had forgotten to deactivate. I've retired my WHS 2011 machine, had no intent on having two installations)

    Server 2012

The changes "feel" significant. Things like where you find the power button, start button (or lack of), and where certain things are. R2 is more like Windows 10, R1 more like Windows 8 (not 8.1). But I'm happy, once it is configured I don't touch it much anyway.
  14. Correct. Since I posted up this topic, I have upgraded my WHS server box to V2, then moved it to a new machine, then moved that to WSE 2012, all seamlessly on the same data drives. Once you reinstall the new product, it sees the pools and you just keep on keepin' on. On one case, I don't remember which, it did change drive letters. Just use Drive Manager and put it back to the original letter. I think though this was when I went from WHS 2011 to WSE 2012. Even with those changes, I have never had a single issue.
  15. Or even just robocopy set up in a time scheduler job. I've done many corporate D2D backups that way.

It is working out pretty well so far. Do you get alerted every time I deactivate and reactivate my licenses? I"m probably driving you crazy if so. WHS 2011 is officially deactivated at my house! I am keeping the VM sitting turned off just in case, but I finished my WSE2012 setup tonight. I wish I could have had R2, the interface is far better. Just in case - I have a legal license. That's why I don't have R2, no source of a legal license.

    Server 2012

    I'll just have to stick to 2012. I don't want to buy R2 when I have R1.

    Server 2012

Bad news for me, the 2012 key doesn't work to activate 2012 R2.

    Server 2012

So, a lot of why I do this is to learn, since I'm just a lowly auditor now and not in operations anymore. Goal accomplished! I'm learning! The R2 install just finished stage one and rebooted, I'm on my way.
  20. The only link I saw in there was the same link I posted. Did I miss something? I'd love to have an easier way! Oops, I see it now. Thank you for pointing this out, I completely overlooked it before!

    Server 2012

Well, my mistake. I installed 2012 but not R2. Going to set up another instance with R2, if all that works I'm going to kill the 2012 VM I set up. Thanks, good catch!
  22. Short story: I mapped my drives as RDMs. http://blog.davidwarburton.net/2010/10/25/rdm-mapping-of-local-sata-storage-for-esxi/ I installed the client OS, then used DrivePool to attach those drives. Now this only works for the one client, I have no idea if you can make the pool available to other VMs, but I doubt it.
