Not bad.. I personally went with a Kingston V300 120gb ssd because I had no need to install a ton of apps and saves me like 50 buck... I paid 74 locally.. the wd reds are a great idea.. just consider where u buy em I got my 1TB 2.5 from newegg and they are great with RMA.. I will highly stress Backup backup backup..
o and make sure that PSU is big enough for your needs. if you plan on filling out that 15 Bay case... corsair are good from what but that's a huge case. better more watts than not enough...

is there a real gain with super micro boards or am I better off with the Gigabyte GA-Z97MX.. I no I keep debating but I want a 24/7 server for storage via my drivepool and movie/music streaming to my laptops....if the gaming board will do I would rather save the cash toward more parts like power supply or liquid cooler or a 2nd 6TB

I also found another supermicro board model MBD-X10-SLH-F-O this board has 6 sata 3 6.0gb/s ports and no lsi card but 1 pci 16 3.0 and 1 pci 8 3.0 and 1 pci 2.0 4x in an 8 slot.. so buying the lsi card later and adding a 24 port multiplyer would work better on this board..
this is also within buget..
im allowed 900 for my board cpu ram and HDD

when I buy a new power supply... how many rails do I need? thee current power supplys im considering are the corsair RM750 & RM 850 both look really good but I believe they are both single rail design.

my wife ok'd the supermicro board MBD-X10SL7-F-O with the xeon 1246v3 and 16gb (2x8gb crucial ecc ram) and a 6TB WD red Also getting 3 x 4 way sata power splitters (hoping to neaten case up and have enough power for hdd and sytem. will my 650 watt be enough to use the xeon and this board... will be using onboard graphics if I stick with this board.
I will be upgrading power supply at later date

So I called Gigabyte and supermicro... supermicro was great and said u can use up to over 200+ drives with revese breakout cables and backplanes. but had no clue about the expander card...
Gigabyte said they think im better off with the Z97 board because its a newer chipset. and ecc ram is not needed.. O by way supermicro said ECC is a must.
its a hard call because I love both boards.. and now Microsoft is giving people a free upgrade to win 10 from 7 or 8.1
my ? now is what board do I upgrade to...

im looking at a possible supermicro board model MBD-X10SL7-F-O I like it cause it has 4 sata 2 3.0gb/s and 2 sata 3 6.0gb/s + 8 sas2 6.0gb/s from an onboard LSI 2308 card... my ? is Are the sas2 ports using standard sata cables because they look like it from pics. my only issue with this board is that I would have to buy a kit of ecc ram .. no big issue though..
in conclusion do I get the supermicro or the gigabyte z97 that uses standard ddr 3 ram...

Is it worth water cooling the xeon 1246v3 considering im not overclocking it. I was looking at the corsair hydro H80i water cooling system with corsair link for a more quiet operation... Or is the stock fan quiet enough.

im looking at the Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 micro atx motherboard on newegg for 127.99 plus 10 dollar rebate and a intel Xeon E3-1246 v3 for 273.99 and a 6 TB wd red for 266.00. Im gonna run the win 8 eval until win 10 launches and that will probably be my "server os" other system specs are as follows....

1 1 TB 3.5 inch green and 1 1 TB b lack in pool,,
16gb gskill ddr 3 1600 ram (ripjaws) possibly upgrading to 32 gb tridents at later time.
this config looks good to me unless anyone has a better idea for a motherboard but I like the ability to run onboard graphics and the have 3 pci express slots for raid cards.. so that if needed I can just step up to a rack case with 24+ hotswap bays...

I have a quick ? is there a limit to the number of red drives in a server?im planning a total of 11 ( 10 hopefully 6 TB + & 1 @ 2.5 inch 1TB

I have the 2.5 inch 1 TB and it is fast enough. the 1 issue ive had was when I had to run a system reload I diconected the red drive to hook a dvd rom up... after reload I reconnected the red and my system would not see it.... so I called newegg and got it rmad immediately new drive is back up running flawlessly.. im getting ready to oder the 6 TB red and my best advise is backup backup backup...and im switching to a usb dvd rom for system reloads because disconnecting hdd sucks.
BTW newegg rma is much faster than WD

have you considered a Xeon for a server im building mine with a Xeon 1246 V3 for 273.99 for the cpu and a gigabyte micro mobo for Ga-z97-Mx gaming 5 mobo with 3 pci 16 slots u can get that board and xeon chip for roughly 400..
also consider the fractal design Node 804 if you are willing to go micro atx .... this case can easily support 10 3.5 inch hdd 2 2.5 inch HDD and a slot load dvd drive. I own it and love it.
im running my home server with 3 1TB drives for now... and looking at some 6 TB drives also using win 8.1 pro as my os for now with drivepool ....this machine rocks with my phenom and when I get my xeon next month there will be no stopping it...

the board im looking at purchasing will have 3 pci express 16 slots if I get the gigabyte or 2 pci express 16 slots if I get the MSI... I prefer msi because they last along time for me my current board is an MSI 880GMA-E45 socket AM3 and im only changing because it has only 1 pci express 2.0 16 slot and I want 2 minimum and new boards are all pci express 3.0. also socket 1150 is limited to 16 lanes while the new socket 2011 v3 is up to 40 lanes with DDR 4 ram support

anyone here understand pci express lanes? xeon I want supports 16 lanes and my new system will run onboard graphics from the xeon then I need 8 lanes for main lsi raid card and 4 lanes for intel 24 port expander card if and when I get it..

getting xeon 1246v3, Gigabyte GA-Z97MX Gaming 5 micro atx mobo, 3 4way startech power splitters for sata power, 1 artic silver 5 thermal compound, 1 aric silver articlean thermal material remover and surface purifier, 1 set Gskill Trident 2x8GB ddr 3 1600 ram..1 WD 6TB hard drive.
with 3 day ship and rush processing should have it by Wednesday or Thursday... cant wait...
