Just wondering, its been a long time, and at least a couple of versions, but should the default setting for BitLocker_PoolPartUnlockDetect not be disabled by default?  I honestly don't know how many people use bitlocker. Is there no way to check if bitlocker is being used at all, and if not disable this?
Drives are constantly clicking and never spin down with this enabled.
Every time I've had to reinstall drive pool I've had to go google this setting, find out what it was called, kill the service, update the service configuration json and then restart.

Maybe add a UI to be able to toggle these settings?

    Thanks (:

yea this was discussed previously and i'd tried it in the past, does not work for me either.  just edited both json and restarted.  set my spindown to 1m.   drives keep on spinning away.

only time i can get them to spindown is stopping the service(s) entirely.

Yea, unraid was/is a non starter for me due to existing data and the filesystem difference etc.  i have a few hundred TB and it would be all kinds of incomprehensible mess I dont have time for with kids.

Now had i saw this whole data obsession/hobby thing becoming what it was.. i definitely would have taken a different path if i was starting from scratch but it is what it is.

I will concur that the stablebit suite is without parallel windows side.  its served me well for quite some time and I honestly hope it will serve me well until that fateful day hopefully some time a reaaaaally long time from now lol.  I love it.

that being said, the spindown issue is not inconsequential.  when youre looking at a chassis with 30x7200rpm disks crammed within a half an inch of one another in an upstairs office spinning 24/7, the summer months prove a huge issue.  I just cant run my air cold enough without making the rest of the house a fridge.   Theres also the power savings however miniscule from letting them spin down.   The age old argument surrounding which is the lesser evil for longevity etc.

i know until i began using drivepool, i always had my drives spin down and would still be doing so if i were able.

It'll be seen as a regular shared drive.  I've been doing this for years.  No need for drivepool on the client pc's (those connecting to a share).

But why was it not present before?  The data on that pool has been unchanged apart from a few MB for a loooong time.

Moreso why is there duplicated “metadata” showing on that pool but not the other pool which holds roughly just as many tb and the same number of disks etc?
thanks for the reply regardless <3

mkay, i was suckered in.   mostly to support covecube (totally need to change company name to stablebit, confusing) but id be lying if i didnt say it was also in part to keep remote notifications on my phone etc, just in case.

now since i feel like im on the board, where's my dark mode.  speak up fellow shareholders!~

Looks like there will be a Cloud+ subscription at $1/device/month.

    As a 3xDrivePool only customer, I don't see a use case.

klepp0906 got a reaction from Jonibhoni in I have to ask, what is the deal with drives and sleep? or lackthereof?
so just did some more testing.   stablebit installs 5 services.  I disabled them all one by one and watched.  the final one to disable was DrivePoolService.  Voila, perpetual pinging disappeared.

Here the entire time i figured it was scanner, its drivepool itself.   so why is that hammering my drives in perpetuity and how do i fix it?  I have auto balancing off, I have every single plugin disabled except for ordered file placement.

is it some kind of unintended bug or?  Summer is coming and a 10x room with 24 of these 7200rpm badboys spinning next to me is no bueno.

There are some hidden by default, already, but that's because they're experimental.
But I don't see a reason why this couldn't be added.
StableBit Scanner uses Telerik controls, which we stopped supporting/using, since they come with a bunch of their own issues.
StableBit DrivePool and StableBit CloudDrive use entirely custom implementations, and all native WPF controls, because of some of the issues we've had with telerik controls.
So, pretty much the opposite.  Eg, StableBit Scanner is the older product (the first, actually).

klepp0906 reacted to Jonibhoni in Will a second license allow cross-access in the same provider?
Yes, you can access it and force attach it in case the other computer will not access it anymore. I think the license doesn't matter in this case. Your license is just about how many computer you can run CloudDrive on; it's independent from the number of providers or cloud drives at a certain provider or logins or whatever.
If you connect to any provider that has cloud drives on it (from any computer, from any license), you will see what StableBit cloud drives exactly are at that location. And then it's up to you which one to attach to, detach from, or force attach, in case of disaster. Read this section of the manual and especially take a look at the screenshots, I think they will give you the impression you need: https://stablebit.com/Support/CloudDrive/Manual?Section=Reattaching your Drive

For balancing and duplication operations, the files are copied to a temp folder, and then renamed when the operation completes.  this ensures that even if an interruption occurs, that the files are intact, whole and not corrupted.
And yeah, that's probably a good way to set things up.

correct, internal operations (balancing, duplication, measuring) are not reported there. Only activity it reports is what happens through the pool drive.

The 100gb has been there for a long while, TBH.  And that's been the default for it since the start.  And by a long while, I mean since the DrivePool v1 days> (so ~2011).   Eg, back when drives rating in TBs were at the high end, for the most part.
You and disable the option or set it to something more reasonable for your setup.   But it sounds like unchecking it may be what you want here.

klepp0906 reacted to Jonibhoni in No option to run balancing pass?
Yep. Also with having automatic balancing enabled, your pool will become unbalanced from time to time. For example if you've setup the "Balance Immediately -> No more often than ..." rule, or if you've setup a trigger like "If the balance ratio falls below...". As soon as there is 1 byte to move, the arrow should appear. But automatic balancing will not start until all the requirements you've setup for automatic balancing are fulfilled. Then you can force an early start of balancing with the arrow.

klepp0906 reacted to Christopher (Drashna) in Does scanner read files in any way?
    Nope.
The surface scan is a sector by sector scan.
The file system scan is an api call for CHKDSK.
So unless you're using the file recovery option, it should not be reading files.

klepp0906 reacted to Christopher (Drashna) in Best way to find "other" data in a pool?
    Mostly, this.
You can use utilities like WinDirStat to view the drives.   But it's very possible/likely that you won't find anything specifically.   Most likely, the difference is due to the size vs size on disk differences (slack space), as well as the System Volume Information folder on each disk.

klepp0906 reacted to Christopher (Drashna) in How does drivepool choose where to move data to if you remove a drive?
It follows the normal balancing, rules.
But you can use the Drive Usage Limiter if you wnt to clear out a specific disk or two.

If you are using symlinks, information about these are stored in the metadata folder, and that is set to x3 duplication by default.

You will need to manually update the location information.
In StableBit DrivePool, disable the bitlocker detection.  That helps from that end.
    https://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_2.x_Advanced_Settings
For StableBit Scanner, throttle the SMART queries, as that usually helps.
    https://stablebit.com/Support/Scanner/2.X/Manual?Section=SMART
As for the work window, that's defined in the "general" tab.  So if you don't have a window set, then this setting doesn't do you much good.
Meets or exceeds it.   Also, there is a threshold setting to.  It will warn you as it approaches that maximum.  (default is for a 15C window)
It's one disk per controller.  So if you have multiple controllers, such as onboard, and a controller card, it can scan multiple disks.
It checks the disks, and see if there are any disks with sections that haven't been scanned in "x" days, with x being the settings for how frequently to scan.
There are some other factors, such as disk activity, etc.
It means that the scanning is done in such a way that any normal activity takes priority over the scans, and may stop the scanning from occurring.   This way, it minimizes the performance impact for the drives, ideally.

Did you ever figure this out?  I mean you figured out it was drivepool but beyond that a fix?  Ive been dealing with this ever since i installed drivepool.  I installed it just after installing my HBA and new disk chassis so assumed it was the old LSI card not being able to pass sleep commands.  Everything I found said it should so i decided to start shutting things off.

Turned off the 3 drivepool services (well 6) but for the 3 softwares as I have all 3 installed.   Drives all sleeping like a baby now.   Obviously need to be able to enable the drivepool service before I set up my pools but i'd love to figure this out first.

I did try procmon myself and same thing, drives didnt pick up activity there but its repeatable via testing.  been at it almost all day.
