  1. oh yea, i do intend to run 2 for now. even though that seems to be conservative considering i'll be covering 24 disks. My concern is whether for example.. say i have those 2 parity drives and I make a single big pool. I now have coverage for 2 failures. say I have those same 2 parity drives but I make 2 separate pools. I now either have coverage for 1 failure from each pool, or still 2 failures irrespective of pool. I'm trying to determine how that works but theres not a lot of info out there in that regard.
  2. gotcha. well now i know how to reset, and now i know it may not be necessary. will have to determine when i get to that point I suppose. I appreciate the information I assume by deleting the device from stablebit cloud you mean removing the pc that shows with the hostname? I imagine that will leave me re-activating all my stablebit softwares?
  3. thank you for the reply. exactly what i need, more to think about I aaaaalmost thought I was decided on one big pool, then someone made me reconsider several smaller pools. I had assumed snapraid was limited to a single pool with a parity drive. apparently that is not the case. you can use a parity drive against several pools. decisions decisions.
  4. So I recently wanted to reset scanner to default. I went into advance and confirmed. It unlinked it from cloud and I had to reactivate but once I re connected it, all my settings and drive scan data was back again. what did I do wrong? scanning seems to be taking a lifetime with 200tb worth of drives and with it defaulting to every 7 days I think,it won’t even make it through them before the cycle resets so it’ll just be scanning in perpetuity. im not concerned about bad sectors as I am failures so I’m really only interested in smart reading. I just don’t want to leave my ui all clumsied up with drives listed as not scanned and partially scanned etc.
  5. So I’ve been trying to even BEGIN creating my pool for at least a week now. Between questions, contingencies, planning, paths, I feel like I’ll never get there. Now I’ve come up against another one that sounds awful! i have over 100tb of data on about 12 drives that’s going to “potentially” need to be balanced across 24 drives. Eons I’m sure. Still it’ll be background I guess and apart from keeping my drives spinning in perpetuity for what will probably be a few months, it’s the price of admission. I should have done this years ago. one thing standing out as a problem though. I’ve noticed a few people complaining folders are left when drivepool moves things. Is this true? That seems absolutely absurd and problematic. Sounds to me like it moves the files within instead of simply moving the folder itself? Or am I understanding incorrectly?
  6. ah so thats not the actual application in the tray, its the warning notification that wont go away i guess until something is done about it. (still transferring lol)
  7. correct, you can only choose actual underlying volumes
  8. after just getting all three of the stablebit softwares installed im doing a lot of digging/learning my way around. im doing so while transfering lots of TB in preparation of setting up drivepool. one drive that im hammering right now is on the floor in a sabrent dock. its also a non helium filled 10TB that seagate is now stuffing in its expansions but it runs very hot compared to the old helium filled barracuda pros. I got a warning from scanner that it was overheating (mid 50's) and while i can appreciate the feature, it seems that every time i try to exit the tray application (or even click on it, i just get the windows notification from scanner. over and over and over as many times as i feel like clicking ill get the overheat notification. What it doesnt give me is a right click/exit scanner or close scanner option.
  9. not intending on using duplication on anything. I use a script to back up my most important files to a non pooled disk and I use macrium to back up my system drive. I plan on using snapraid parity for the pool.
  10. I havent even set UP the pool as im stuck on that detail. I tested it hoping it was a fluke but the minute you select a 17th your next button greys out trying to think of what kind of compromise can be made to have this work.
  11. that is definitely a solid point. On one hand I feel like it is kind of married and central to a jbod software, on the other i can certainly see the wisdom in what youre saying. alternatives do exist that do function, and while not as polished or as intuitive as a solution here would/could be... finite time, resources, manpower and most importantly vision for the software... i get it. be all the jbod you can be.. or be less jbod but add parity ala jack of all trades master of none etc.
  12. awesome, i appreciate it. Its not the first software I've came across that behaves this way. unsure if its something tied to a legacy way of doing things but it often seems to be older softwares doing it. either way, glad its on the table now its an inconvenience in the best of times. also glad you checked before i got around to having to dig through my appdata folder and delete etc
  13. thats fair enough. I dont know that the system tray would be useful outside of quicker access to monitoring temps. That was the use-case I had in mind. As for polluting the tray, let me tell ya... lol and i only have the "neccessities" running. the UI location is "sort" of saved. It seems to save window size and location on the display I have set as primary in windows for gaming reasons, but if i put it on my secondary/accessory display where I keep basically everything else, it wont save. I re-open it and it just ends up on the other display again. I've been using a displayfusion window profile to hotkey it back over to where i like it every time i have to run it. a potential darkmode is a big win though
  14. I appreciate the reply/honesty. Cant win em all
  15. I'm trying to plan out how I'm going to turn my 24 disks into a pool and have primocache do its thing. I've never used either drivepool or primocache so this is all a step by step learning process. Primocache will only allow you to cache 16 volumes and I have 24 in my new DAS. 2 will be omitted due to being used for parity, but with drivepool's balancing and shifting of things to wherever it wants/needs to, how do I choose which other drives I can omit? What are my options here?
  16. these drivers hosted anywhere? this is the necro of all necro's but man am i digging around trying to find a solution to get my LSI 2308-e to shoot over spindown commands from win10
  17. My eyes, i'm blind! The option to enable dark mode or follow the system setting would be greatly appreciated, very few apps that i run do not have the option (as well as the other stablebit softwares). I'm also a multi monitor user and the fact this doesnt save the window location (along with the other stablebit softwares) is pretty inconvenient. finally the ability to minimize to the tray would be helpful. with scanner, the ability to be able to tooltip or have quick access to the temp monitor especially. a bit of polish such as the aforementioned would certainly make buying licenses for my other machines substantially more compelling.
  18. So the last thread I found that addressed this was in 2019. Just curious if any more time and thought has been given to the idea? I’m getting ready to use drivepool the first time. While planning things out the biggest issue for me is parity as I simply can’t accommodate mirroring. I know snapraid exists and will have to make use of it in the interim but I’d prefer it built into drivepool 100x over. Is there hope or should I give up and let go of the dream? :p
  19. I imagine i'll have plenty more as I get this ball rolling, but i don't pick up the DAS chassis until this weekend. These are the only pre-emptives that come to mind. 1) i see covecube has been around since ~2011 or some such. I have no idea about the size of the company or how future plans but a reddit post i came across somewhere during research suggested that updates are rare and made it sound like it was to become vaporware. i'm about to pool/shuffle/move a HUGE amount of data (think >100tb) that ive had path(ed) in with various scripts and softwares for a long long time. its gonna be a ton of work. pooling is really the only solution and i should have done it a long time ago. that being said, I dont want to have to procure extra drives and do this all again should anything ever happen. ideally this will be the "final" solution. I know this is a very ambiguous inquiry and i dont expect to be let in on business plans as thats none of my business. I'm just trying to ascertain whether its reasonable to expect for this to be around and functional for lots of years 2) less ambiguous. I use macrium reflect. it has saved my ass enough times over the years that i'll use it for the rest of my life. Its my understanding that from within windows macrium/the macrium gui will see the pool as its presented, as a single disk. for macrium to function as far as backup sets and retention rules go it requires the backups to go into a single folder. it seems drivepool likes to shuffle things all over. This presents a few sub-questions. A) how does this work with macriums image guardian which prevents any modification/moving/deletion of the backups? I assume drivepool would be told to kick rocks. can the macrium backup folder be excluded from whatever feature does the "shuffling"? b) how is the Pool seen outside of windows? when restoring from macrium you can start the restore from within windows, but it will reboot to the rescue environment to complete it. even worse if you cant get into windows and you need to use the bootable usb media/rescue environment, would macrium see the pool/see the backups at that point? has anyone used macrium with drivepool that has first hand knowledge? would i be better off keeping my macrium disk outside of the pool? I plan on removing the drive letters from anything pooled as drive letter limitations is what forced me into this mess (only so many letters in the english alphabet lol). sorry for the book but i've already purchased so youre stuck with what to come
