	Hi,
</p>

<p>
	I've been using StableBit DrivePool for years, but I'll probably replace my Windows PC, and I'll have to rethink my system. Today, my motherboard has 6 SATA ports, where I have my 6 HDDs connected. My new PC will be a mini PC, with only USB-C ports (USB-C 4), and I won't be able to connect all 6 HDDs directly to the motherboard, as of today. So, I'm thinking of moving my HDs to an external enclosure, something like a DAS. I use these HDDs not just as backup, but to work with the files on a daily basis . Nothing too heavy, but I don't want to wait seconds to open a Word document, for example.
</p>

<p>
	Can you suggest an enclosure that supports USB-C 3+ with a good transfer rate and that would recognize my drives separately, so I could continue using DrivePool? I've been looking around, and I just can't find a reliable one. I always find reviews saying that the enclosure has damaged the drives and corrupted all the files inside.
</p>

<p>
	Thanks!
</p>

	Quick question, I'm planning a full hardware upgrade to my 2017 home server. Pretty much the only things I'm keeping are the 2 18tb drives, the PSU and maybe the GPU. looking for the simplest and safest way to accomplish this.
</p>

<p>
	1. Back up the server contents on another machine, then reload?
</p>

<p>
	2.  or can I just rebuild the machine without the HDD, load the software then restart with the HDD plugged in ?
</p>

<p>
	Thoughts?

	I am thinking of moving from win10 to win11 (need a new motherboard, cpu, ram, and a new ssd boot disk). Currently, I use drivebender and would like to change to drivepool. What would be the best sequence (first to new pc or first to drivepool?) and which steps should I take to get the software and hardware migration done. Would appreciate a detailed answer so I can check how this all works without hopefully having migration issues....given that win10 is almost not supported anymore, I think there will be more users in the same boat. Any guide or plan available would be really nice!

	*Oops, should be in General I think, not Hardware. Move if need.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	Hi,
</p>

<p>
	Running Windows 10 Pro.
</p>

<p>
	I have six 4TB drives in a pool (drive E:\) that are more than 8 yrs old. I have scanner showing some 56 bad sectors on 1 drive, though stable for a 2 weeks. I decided to change them out anyways and replacing them with four 14TB drive. The data will remain on the old drives and I will put them away just as a spare backup should they ever be needed.
</p>

<p>
	In the current pool, some folders have been set to duplicate, but not all.
</p>

<p>
	The old drives are connected through an HBA. I can connect the 4 new drives to the motherboard SATA drives, so I should be able to have them all online.
</p>

<p>
	What is the best way to migrate? I was thinking of doing this:
</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		Create a brand new pool as drive F:\ with the 4 new drives.
	</li>
	<li>
		Copy everything over from E:\ to F:\
	</li>
	<li>
		Turn off the machine and just remove the 6 drives, along with the HBA.
	</li>
	<li>
		Configure the new drive pool for duplication as needed and performance, etc.
	</li>
</ol>

<p>
	Will this work? When I start back up, can I just rename F: to E:. or do I need to do some cleanup and remove E: first?
</p>

<p>
	Thanks.
</p>

	Ive been using Windows Home Server 2011 for a storage server. Mostly to backup my home computers for bare metal recovery. I use the included Backup software on the server to connect to the computers and do the backup. I also store photos on the server. Most of my other files are hosted in the cloud.
</p>

<p>
	I want to update the server and am at a loss what i should use for an operating system. I still want to use the Stablebit software to manage the disks and provide duplication.
</p>

<p>
	My important uses include:
</p>

<p>
	1. backup
</p>

<p>
	2 remote management (my storage server is headless)
</p>

<p>
	3 File shares (so I can use DrivePool)
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	What do you suggest? I see that you are running Windows Server 2019. Would this give me the required functions (same look/feel) as Windows Home Server 2011?

	I was using DrivePool because I couldn't get a RAID on an old server.  Now I have a fancy server with hot swappable bays and a raid controller.
</p>

<p>
	What is the best practice to use RAID with stablebit? Should I just ignore the RAID setup and just Drivepool and all drives not in a RAID? Do I put them in the RAID as...mirrors? Or if money is no object do I just make my hardware raids and ignore Stablebit?

	My ~10 year old MediaSonic ProBox died today. Will no longer recognize the USB interface. So my DrivePool is now down hard because I have 4 drives offline. At first I was just going to replace the old MediaSonic ProBox with a new one. However, current price on the MediaSonic ProBox is now close to $200. When I bought my ProBox, it was $50. OK, sticker shock. But this leads me to question other options. Individual USB enclosures are around $25, so about $100 for 4 enclosures to replace the ProBox. Have also looked at dual docking stations for about $36 each, or $72 for my 4 drives. Are there other options I have not considered? Don't know if anyone here has some recent advice on enclosure purchases, but would appreciate any help in deciding how to move forward. Thanks.

	Good Day All,
</p>

<p>
	I come to you all for help, and I am quite confident I will get the help I need here <span class="ipsEmoji">🙂</span>
</p>

<p>
	So, a friend gave me a Brand New SANS DIGITAL EliteSTOR ES316X6+B JBOD to solve my ever expanding storage needs for Plex.
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.newegg.com/sans-digital-es316x6-b/p/N82E16816111198" rel="external nofollow">Sans Digital EliteSTOR ES316X6+B</a>
</p>

<p>
	I would like to know how I can connect all the hard drives in this device to a Windows 11 Pro Workstation PC (Dell Precision 7920)
</p>

<p>
	The EliteSTOR JBOB will be for backup only and I will be using Storage Pool to manage all 14 Drives so far ( at least that is my hope).It did come with a SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 cable.
</p>

<p>
	I would like to connect it to my Workstation so I can access all the drives on there, but my workstation does not have the port to plug the SFF-8088 cable in. I assume from there that I will need one more component, and I do not know what that could be.<br />
	I have been reading on HBA (very new to this), and I was looking at these two;

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I believe once I install this on my Workstation, I should then be able to see the 14 drives using DrivePool?
</p>

<p>
	I know there are people on here with way more experience than me and I hope you all do guide me to achieve what I am hoping to.

	I'll be attaching it via a USB-C cable.  I just need to know if there's anything I need to do wrt Drivepool before removing them from my Norco.  From what I understand, all the pooling information is stored on the pooled drives themselves and the order in which they're placed in drive bays don't matter, but I just want to dot all my T's and cross all my I's.  I won't be doing anything crazy, like RAID or unRAID, just messing with DP (and Scanner).

<p>
	Please let me know before I put shotgun holes in my credit card, as the Sabrent ain't cheap.  Thanks muchly in advance!

	I have 18 external drives connected to my pc via USB3 that are being managed by DrivePool.  Can I simply shuck those drives and put them into a couple JBOD enclosures connected to the same pc (also by USB3) and have them recognized by DrivePool without having to do anything else?

	I recently ordered some new hardware from a supplier I've used for many years and when looking back through my order history, I noticed that I had purchased four 2TB Samsung HD204UI drives from them 10 years ago - three of these drives are still going strong in my file server! I've had numerous drives fail on me over the years, yet these ones just keep going!
</p>

<p>
	This got me thinking - how old is the oldest drive you have in your PC/server? Whilst I now know these HD204UI's are 10 years old, Stablebit Scanner reports them as around 7 years 300 days old, so I assume that's been their "power on" time.
</p>

<p>
	(Before anyone asks, yes I do have some redundancy in my system and have spare drives on standby just in case!)

	I've done a clean Windows Install and I must have forgotten how to setup the "SSD Optimizer" plug in correctly for File Placement.  This is the only plugin I have active and I've got:
</p>

<p>
	- SSD checked for the SSD and Archive checked for the spinning rust
</p>

<p>
	- On file Placement I've checked a couple of folders I want to remain only on the SSD for performance reasons.  I've also marked these folders as "Never allow files to be placed on any other disks"
</p>

<p>
	This seems to work correctly in that files are moved onto the SSD, but.... When I run a "Re-Balance" these files are then copied OFF the SSD back to the HDD.
</p>

<p>
	Any thoughts?

	Does DP/Scanner work with practically any external enclosure, particularly as it relates to SMART reporting?  I suspect my aging Norco is in its twilight and I'm probably going to have to redo the entire system in the next month or so.  I have 10 drives with the intent of getting more when prices are more favorable, but ran into the issue of finding a case that has the room along with an associated PSU with enough power leads (I don't want to resort to one of those cables with five power connectors that could cause a house fire).
</p>

<p>
	To that end, I was eyeing this cute little beast:
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://sabrent.com/products/ds-uctb" rel="external nofollow">https://sabrent.com/products/ds-uctb</a>
</p>

<p>
	(The 10-bay version.)
</p>

<p>
	Should this work will full pooling and reporting functionality?  If not, does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative that's NOT a rackmount chassis?
</p>

<p>
	Thanks in advance!

	I'm in the process of trying to figure out the best path forward with my home server. It's about 8-9 years old now, running WHS 2011 on an i3-4150 with 8gb memory. It's mainly used as a file server and streams media to a media player. The motherboard has 6 Sata connectors, the C:/OS drive is a Samsung 840 SSD, the other 5 HDDs are a mix of HGST drives ranging from 4TB-16TB. The system has been performing fine, usually I get around 120MB/s with any transfers and I'm happy enough with that performance for now. My main issue is I'm out of space and can't back up my movie collection (about 20TB). So given the age of the system I'm debating my options and have come up with the following
</p>

<p>
	1) Replace one of the 4TB drives with another 16TB drive. This would solve the problem for about $350 dollars
</p>

<p>
	2) Add a PCIe SATA expansion card to connect the x4 old 4TB drives I have sitting around. Though I'd need an external enclosure since my case can't hold any more drives. It seems like from reading reviews that these cards can be finicky and I don't really wanna deal with instability. So I'm not sure on this option.
</p>

<p>
	3) Upgrade motherboard/cpu to a mobo that has at least 8x sata ports (ideally would aim for x10-x12 ports). I'm not finding a lot of decent options here though unless I'm missing boards it seems like most are $500ish dollars, plus then a cpu (haven't even looked for another cpu that supports ECC yet).
</p>

<p>
	4) An option I'm not thinking of?
</p>

<p>
	Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
</p>

	Very happy with how drivepool has performed on my aging desktop, but soon I'll be transferring the license to my newer PC, a Hades Canyon NUC running Windows 11.  Currently my drivepool consists of internal drives, but after my 4-bay external enclosure arrives I'll connect it to the Hades Canyon and use drivepool with the DAS.  It has USB 3.1 Gen2 so no bottelenecks there for streaming my 4k UHD videos.  I have paralysis from analysis when trying to decide which hard drives to put in the DAS.  My first question for the group is for someone to validate that drivepool with read striping enabled on DAS drives will not introduce a bottleneck when streaming 50-80GB mkv video files.  Assuming drivepool will play nice with this setup, I am partial to western digital drives and put a premium on noise level over performance.  I'm trying to identify the most quiet 14tb-18tb hard drive out there.  Reliability and noise level are the most important factors.

	I've filled up my tower.  I bought a new external USB 3 enclosure and a couple pretty fast drives, and added them to Drivepool.  USB3 is a little slow, particularly on random reads/writes.  I'd like to take a couple of the full drives out of my tower and move them to the external enclosure, and then put the new fast drives on the SATA connections in the tower.  All are presently in the drive pool.  Can I just move physical drives around like this?

	Hello team,
</p>

<p>
	I have a ws2016 machine with a gigabyte mobo with 6 sata ports and 2 pcie adaptec 6805 cards (8 port) full of drives.
</p>

<p>
	In total I have 19 drives in my machine.
</p>

<p>
	It includes 3 pools: 2 of 2 drives and one of 5 drives, all have duplication enabled.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I was wondering what is the best in terms of performance ? Should drives from a same pool be placed on the same controller or on different controllers ?
</p>

<p>
	What would the pros and cons be ?
</p>

	Can anyone comment on how well DP would work with a Win 10 laptop and a 4 bay TB3 JBOD?  I've used DP for quie a while, but had most success with internal drives.  I did have an external USB 3.0 JBOD some years ago but it was rather flaky, often dropping the pool under sustained load (say copying a few hundred MB in one operation), which would then (as I remember) lead to needing to reboot the computer (I don't think re-plugging the USB cable or power cycling the JBOD was usually enough) and DP wanting to rescan the pool before I could use it again.  I blamed that mostly on the JBOD hardware/firmware though, and not DP.  Will TB3 provide a more stable pool, or am I likely to face similar issues?

<p>
	I have a Lenovo Thinkserver TS140 running windows 10 pro OS on a 500GB SSD and #3 4tb HD in a 12TB pool using StableBit DrivePool. I use it as a Plex media server and as my personel computer. I want to add a 4 or 5 bay Enclosure JBOD's which will have 10tb HD's in it. I will start with two hd's and add others as needed. I need help choosing an enclosure and an Esata card that work well together. I have the following questions too. When using StableBit DrivePool what is best for a Port Multiplier on an eSATA card, command based switching or FIS (Frame Information Structure)-based switching, or does it not make any difference. The card I was looking at had 2 eSATA ports that could be used simultaniously but it only used command based switching on the port multipliers. I was thinking that I want the enclosure to have a power toggle switch so that it does not shutdown when rebooting my server or does it matter. Will StableBit DrivePool connect automatically with the enclosure when I reboot my PC? Also will StableBit Scanner be able to monitor the HDs in the enclosure thru eSATA and will the HD S.M.A.R.T. status work? Is there anything else I need to consider for this to work or do I have to consider another way to add storage.
</p>
