New USB 3.0 PCI-E card

hmishra

Question

Hello,

I want to replace my existing 2 port USB 3.0 card with a 5 port one. The problem is, all of my drives contained in the pool are connected to either of those usb ports which means, when I take out the old card, I will loose all of my pooled drives.

My question is, can I simply disconnect all the connected drives, replace the card and then reconnect all the drives to the new one and automatically regain access to the pool and the data? If not, what do I need to do to make this happen without resorting to significant interim data transfers to other PCs etc.?

Thanks,

Hiranmoy

There is absolutely no issue with swapping the card out.

The data about the pool is stored on the disk, so as long as StableBit DrivePool can see the disks, there is no issue.

In fact, if you have USB/eSATA enclosure, there is no issue with switching between the input types as well. As long as they show up properly.

So to answer the question, yes. Just disconnect the drives, swap out the controller card, and reconnect them. StableBit DrivePool will handle that just fine.

That makes it so much easier. I will do it sometime over the weekend.

Thanks!

P.S.. I gotta say....regardless of the technical strengths of drive pooling products on the market today, in my opinion, one of the most important reason that sets Stablebit products apart is the excellent responsiveness of support, either on forums or through support requests. So thank you once again for your quick response.

Hi - I recently got a Lian Li EX-503 external drive enclosure to use with Stablebit Drivepool.  Am running WSE12R2 on a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H mobo with the latest Intel USB3 drivers.  Unfortunately, I cannot get this mobo to properly recognize the EX-503 unit.  Windows OS detects it but it's shown up as an unknown USB device in Device Manager with Code 43 (Set Addressed Failed) error.

What USB3 pci-e card, if any, is compatible with Drivepool that also supports port multipliers?  I could not locate a documented list of supported USB3 or eSata pci-e cards.

Thanks.

StableBit DrivePool doesn't care. As long as it sees the disks, it's happy.

The issue would definitely be the USB controller and Windows here.

However, this sounds like an issue with the hardware, though.

Check out this link:

And USB drives should should have no issue with port multiplication, it's eSATA that does. And for that, we recommend any card that uses the ASM1061 chipset.
