New server build, advice needed

ECEC

Question

Hello folks! A few years back I setup a friend with an HP MediaSmart server, and it's held up very well over the years, at least until recently. Now it just becomes completely unresponsive after awhile. I've tried troubleshooting it, but since it's been in use a good long while my friend agreed it's probably time for a new server. My requirements are going to be something stable and reliable (he's a good friend but I don't want to be over there troubleshooting all the time), and easily expandable.

I built my server two years ago, based around WHS2011 and DrivePool. It's been rock solid ever since, but since WHS2011 isn't available anymore, I figured I would go with W7 64bit. The server will be running the following:

- DrivePool

- SABNZBd

- CouchPotato

- Sickbeard
- Plex
- AirVideo for streaming to iOS on the fly

Here's what I have so far:

He already has 3x 2TB drives I'm planning on tossing in with the two 3TB drives, which should give him plenty of growing space. I feel like the CPU might be a bit overkill, but I want this box to last several years at least. The case is the one I ended up going with, and is probably the easiest case I've ever worked with so it was kind of a no-brainer.

Any thoughts on how to make it cheaper/better/stronger?

Yeah, supply for WHS2011 seems to be drying up. :(

But it definitely can be had. Just takes a bit more digging, it seems.

As for the hardware, I'd recommend ASUS over ASRock. The last couple of ASRock boards I've gotten have had some weird issues, and more trouble than they're worth.

I'm not exactly a fan of that case, but that's entirely personal preference. :)

Though the Power Supply should be adequate, I'm in the camp of "get more than you need". That way you can expand without worry, or having to upgrade later.

But otherwise, looks good.

I'm open to suggestions on the case and PSU. :) I just like the case because it was the one I ended up with.

I'm not going to recommend a case, because as I said, it's user preference. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Personally, I really like rackmount hardware :) And open air cases. But I tinker constantly.

As for PSU, like I said, that 450W should be good, but I'd recommend a 650 or 750 model, as it will be able to handle more. As for brand.... I'm partial to OCZ and Corsair. But all things considered, I'd avoid OCZ for a while.
