missing disk replacement

Branimator

Question

Hello,

So I had a problem disk in my pool that was giving issues and slowing down the entire server. I didn't have time to remove the disk officially as I needed the server up at full speed for a deadline, so I just took it out of the server physically and replaced with another drive. The removed drive was duplicated files only.

Drivepool gave me the missing disk error, and saw my new drive. I removed the missing disk and added the new drive and drivepool seems very happy actually. It's very snappy now and not giving me any errors.

It was pretty flawless actually.i still have the removed drive untouched sitting on my desk.

My question is:

Should I reconnect the old drive now I have time?

Drivepool has already re duplicated all the missing files it says over night.

Is there a way to verify this is as smooth as it seems and that there are no missing files? I have re measured and re balanced.

Should I just not worry about it and keep it how it is?

To me the duplicated files is taking up more space then it should then before, but maybe this will correct itself?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

About swapping the disks, that's one of the reasons that we recommend enabling duplication for everything.  If something does go wrong, replacing the drive is SUPER simple, as you've found out. It makes for a great experience, in fact!

If all of the data that was on the disk was duplicated, then no... There would be no need to reconnect the disk, as the pool should be fine.

Reconnecting the disk will immediately readd it to the pool, as the drive itself hasn't been marked as "removed".

As for verifying, that's harder. StableBit DrivePool doesn't store a list of all of the files on the pool.  We generate the list dynamically, from the underlying disks.

But if you want, reconnect the old disk, and then remove it from the pool. Use the "Duplicate data later", as this will skip duplicated data.  So the removal will be fast, and the software will check the files before processing them (eg, deciding whether to skip or move the file).

Yeah, it was really cool because I don't have everything duplicated. Soon as stablebit scanner detected smart errors on that problem drive. Drive pool automatically only put duplicated files on that drive. I am just going to leave it as is for now, and just have that old drive ready in case any errors show up later on.

Thanks for all your hard work, it's really a great piece of software. Look forward to see what you guys do in the future.
