Slow Login in Windows 10

MatBailie

Question

I recently had to migrate my drivepool from my server to my desktop (MB died).

Since then my desktop has been Very slow to login.

- Turn on, fans start at full speed

- ~12s later, Login Screen appears

- Fans still full, Login dialogue won't show

- ~45s later, fans go to normal (MB software loaded?) and can log in now

- ~10s later screen goes black

- ~40s later desktop appears

When I uninstal DP, I can log in straight away, and desktop appears with a couple of seconds.

Is this normal / expected behaviour? Or anything I can do to speed this up?

I won't be replacing the server motherboard any time soon :(

No, this isn't normal.  But I'm willing to be that this is antivirus related ..... because issues like this usually are.

So, what antivirus do you have installed?

Also, you may want to do this:

http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_2.x_Boot_Time_Log_Collection

And then run this:

When I enabled the logging I couldn't log in at all (everything froze just after desktop appeared).  Managed to get in to safe-mode and remove the anti-virus (Avast) and rebooting now seems fine (without the original issues).

Will be trying Avira or something next, unless you have a better recommendation?

Thanks for your help.

I'm happy to reproduce the issue and supply the logs if you want them, otherwise I'm happy that I now have options to remedy this fully myself :)

Thanks again,

Mat.

Well, I'm glad to hear that removing Avast helped/solved the problem.

That said, I don't really have a recommendation for Antivirus.  By their very nature, they can (do) cause issues, because of how they work.

The real time protection works by installing a "file system filter", which is a driver that sits ontop of NTFS, that intercepts, monitors and can modify calls to a disk.   This is specifically what can cause issues.

That said, we've had various issues with many of the major antivirus vendors at one point or another.  None are immune from issues.

As for what antivirus .... if it's free, anymore, it's going to be super spammy, or missing on key features (malwarebyes has no realtime production, for instance).

And as for paying, I'd recommend trying before you buy. And check the ratings for the software before picking one.
